Topic: The "bollocks" episode

Message 1 / 11
expiration.dateJan 26, 2010

Does anyone happen to know which episode had that wonderful exchange between Paul and Clement, where Paul said something to the effect of "I think public schools are just as good as state schools", Clement buzzed and said "bollocks," to which Nicholas responded "We'll give Clement a point for his bollocks..."

I distinctly remember this, and would love to hear the episode again, but I'm also open to the idea that I've gone mad and it didn't actually happen... anyway. Any help much appreciated.

I have a recollection of this happening - my recollection is that Paul
claimed to have been educated at a public school and Clement challenged
that with "bollocks".

I haven't been able to find the transcript of the show though - I have a
feeling my new site is not completely archived by Google as yet. Maybe
someone else has heard this recently.

There was also an episode where Clement talked about going into a public toilet and writing bollocks on the wall, wasn't there?

I'm sorry that this is a bit off the topic of gentlemen's dangly bits and of Just a Minute, but the debate reminded me of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHx8y1rFjdk&feature=player_embedded

It's from the Daily Telegraph's World Cup Blogcast in 2006 and features Clement telling a rather amusing joke. Worth a listen!

Cheers

Thank you! Enjoying it now. And what an excellent episode it was, with one of Nicholas' wittiest lines in the series.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's one of Nicholas' wittiest lines, to be witty you need to have a certain amount of wit.  Peter Jones had that in spades.  We all know that Nicholas himself is not a wit, he's not even a half-wit, he's more of a nitwit.  Besides, what's so witty about Nicholas awarding a bonus point to Clement's bollocks?  It was Clement that made the comment and got the laugh, Nicholas was merely doing what he's been doing all his professional life... ride someone else's comedic coattails.

Sorry, I should have been more specific - it was another line of Nicholas' from that episode that I found to be good:

NP: Have you never said good-bye to a lift?

PM: No, have you?

NP: Oh yes, sometimes I say good night to the cooker at night, before I go up and switch it off, good night cooker.

PM: And does the cooker talk back to you?

NP: No, unfortunately, no.

PM: Because that would be a sign of mental illness, wouldn't it!

NP: My cooker is entirely sane!

"My cooker is entirely sane" was an unusually quick comeback, and it made me laugh. He does get good lines in on occasion... but I think JaM has been much better off through the years for having a chairman who, most of the time, is content to sit back and let the others get the laughs. When the host of a panel show thinks they're also a contestant, it doesn't go well (see Toksvig, Sandy).

Again, not an example of Nicholas' wit, just a pitiful attempt to try and deflect the implications that he's mentally unbalanced.  And I disagree that Nicholas is content to let the panelists get the laughs, because there is never an episode that goes by when he doesn't try to stick his big fat stinking conk into the proceedings.  These tend to consist of blatant insults, full blown patronizing and condescending behavior, pathetic attempts to cover up his own incompetence, stealing other people's better executed material, and as I've mentioned in a previous post just generally riding OTHER people's comedic coattails.

Yes, I believe so. Also, Paul Merton used it in a way I found both very amusing and gave a great insight into Paul's thinking while playing.
He had just re-started after an interruption caused by some children
peeking through the open door, made a very silly immediate repetition and cursed himself for doing so by muttering "Bollocks!" even as Clement challenged him.
It also has the great exchange between Paul and Nicholas about 'Groping Grumpy' which Paul finishes by triumphantly saying
"Your Witness!" having emphatically made his point. Fantastic wit.

Its a great episode all in all actually. #601 19 Jan 2004 if you're interested.
