Re: 2 More 'Lost' Episodes #431 & #433

it's funny because when I first starting downloading JAM episodes and made CDs for personal use to listen in the car, it was an interesting journey I went on especially as it headed towards the late 80's and essentially it was there that I discovered the reason Kenneth wasn't around was because he died, the same with Derek Nimmo and Peter Jones.  it didn't dawn on me to even learn anything more about those gentlemen until long after I had pretty much gotten caught up with the series as a whole.

but when I heard that particular episode with Nicholas' announcement, my heart sank, cuz Derek was such a great presence on the show and his passing, even though I had heard of it long after the fact, was still no less than a shock.

and it's also fitting that on Derek's last recording he also won, which I think was very fitting because he went out in style.  :)

Indeed. In fact Nicholas refers to Derek's Sheffield appearances
as "his last professional engagement" and Derek's family agreed
to its broadcast as a tribute. Yes, he appears once or twice more
before the end of the series, but I too think of this as his
last appearance - despite Dean's terse response to my e-mail
pointing this out some years ago!

The first Sheffield recording is also prefaced by an announcement
about Derek recovering in hospital (25th Jan 99) and the tribute
broadcast is on the 1st of March 99.

Sheffield is my home town and it is to my lasting regret that
I did not attend this recording, but it was not until some years
later that I 're-discovered' Just A Minute that I had
enjoyed so much in my childhood.

Series 37 on the links page includes both episodes #497 and #503
with the special prefaces regarding Derek and are, fittingly,
one of the very best pair of episodes from one recording you could
wish to hear.

I have of the second recording he did with Linda Smith, Tony Hawks
and Graham Norton has that special opening that Nicholas did almost
eulogizing his old friend, I think of that as Derek's last
appearance.
