Topic: another excellent show

Message 1 / 31

I thought the team was hilarious today. Graham Norton who is usually good had one of his best shows ever. Sue Perkins was a star. Liza Tarbuck had some of her funniest moments ever, and Paul was quieter than usual but very funny when he did speak up. The best show in two or three years, I'd say.

I'll tell you who else had one of his funniest shows - Nicholas. I think he seems to be in very good form this year.

Statistical oddity: until last year Sue Perkins had gone 22 shows without a win. Since then she's won six out of seven shows, including the last five in a row.

Haven't heard anything as yet about the recording today. Earlier today Sue Perkins tweeted that the panel would be Paul Merton, Tony Hawks, Graham Norton and herself, which if true, certainly makes for a very strong finish to the season.

just confirming - the panel was indeed Paul, Tony, Graham and Sue... we even have a blurry pic! Unusually Tony Hawks isn't sitting at one of the ends!

I look forward to listening to this one, but the idea that Nicholas had one of his funniest shows beggers belief, largely because for him to have had his funniest show would have to presuppose that he was ever funny to begin with.  ;)

tony hawks also made a tweet about recording just a minute ( his twitter account is @thefridgeman) "Recorded two new Just A Minutes last night. Me, Sue Perkins, Graham Norton and Paul Merton. Good fun. Will let you know broadcast dates"

judging by this comment i presume they record 2 shows a recording as isihac does ?

cheers

Dean, although I’m happy with most of your comments re Monday’s broadcast, I cannot agree with your assertion that, “Sue Perkins was a star”.  Sue Perkins will never be a star, at least not in comedy.

Her persona, being much too sour and spiteful for most people, prevents her from rising above the mediocrity achieved by most comedians.  The defining statistics for me are the number of laughs she gets versus the number of laughs she doesn’t get.  Unfortunately, for her there are too many of the latter, which probably results in her then trying “too” hard, which of course exacerbates the problem.

Although I’ve been less than appreciative of her efforts for some time, the final straw came on Monday with the athletes/personality jibe.  What an unfunny generalization that was, at least for most of the audience.

It was as worthy as saying that all lesbians from East Dulwich are, dried-up, sour-faced bitches.

Hope you’re keeping well,

All the best,

Steve

Wow - first Bobby slams Nicholas - now Steve takes out Sue P!

I think we should go for the five-fer here! Come on! We have someting like 600 people here - there must be those who have never seen the point of Graham Norton, Liza Tarbuck and Paul Merton.

So come on people - step up to the plate! I'll make a start...

Graham Norton  - over-rated and over-paid...

Liza Tarbuck - should stick to dramatic roles

Paul Merton - well past his use-by date...

seriously, I enjoy reading strong interesting opinions even if I disagree so if someone does want to argue why any of these aren't funny (or are!) - jump in!

Then maybe we should start on Sarah Sharpe - (seriously... why can't she blow that damn whistle properly?)

I'm kind of a lurker here, but I will say I feel like Julian Clary is phoning it in a lot of the time: his brand of camp can be very witty, or it can just feel like one reflexive double entendre after another.

I'll defend Sue Perkins to the death, though. Poised, articulate, and engaging when it's her turn; quick and playful during the back-and-forth ... I'm always glad when she's on. I haven't heard this week's episode yet, though, so I can't comment on her anti-athlete prejudice.

I haven't had the opportunity to listen to the more recent batch of episodes.  But if Sue Perkins is able to win her appearances now, then good for her.  I love Sue Perkins, she herself is very playful and doesn't mind taking the mickey out of herself occasionally when she screws up.  She is also very intelligent, articulate and informative and just damned funny.

I don't mind Liza Tarbuck being on the show, she brings a nice giggly female presence on to the show, someone who is obviously having a great time and having fun.

Nice to see you're not taking things too seriously, Steve.

And tell me, how long did you agonise over the dried-up sour-faced lesbian bitches from East Dulwich "zinger"? I must say, it was the "lesbian" bit that really rammed it home and had me fanning my armpits - thank goodness that dreadful Perkins woman is a confirmed wearer of sensible shoes or else your line would not have been nearly as vitriolic: "dried up straight women sour-faced bitches from East Dulwich" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Keep 'em coming Steve. Let's hope they invite Sandi Toksvig back for a return gig, I'd love to hear your assessment of her - gay, Danish, short, plain - you'd be spoiled for material Steve, spoiled.

To be honest, my heart gladdens when I hear that Liza Tarbuck is on a show. She hails from the same part of the world as I do but I find her witty in a low-key sort of way. And Graham Norton as well, and not becuase we share the root of a surname. Odd that he's Irish with the English spelling of the surname and I'm English with the Irish spelling... Having said that, i did see him on "Who Do You Think You Are" so I can understand why he has the English spelling.

I think Sue Perkins is a great comedian and TV presenter. She is excellent when on The News Quiz; however I don't particularly like her (recent) style on Just A Minute. She falls into the "too competitive" camp for me, together with Gyles Brandreth. I prefer people who play the game as entertainment and Sue and Gyles seem to play it to win. Which, as Robert says, is fair enough and perhaps explains Dean't statistical oddity. Just not my cup of tea. I did think her comment on sportspeople's lack of personality as a sweeping generalisation but a lot of comedy does the same. I didn't find it offensive, but then again I'm not a sportsperson. I wouldn't be suprised, though, if the BBC got a few complaints about it.

BBC iPlayer had a hiccup with Monday night's Radio 4 programmes which perhaps explains the delay in posting. I'm travelling at the minute but will upload my copy as soon as I can if someone else doesn't beat me to it. It's too haphazard using mobile broadband for uploading large files.

Incidentally, my understanding was that people outside the UK could hear radio programmes on iPlayer but not TV? I notice people from outside the UK saying that they couldn't connect. Has this changed and/or has anyone tried recently?

Cheers

You can't use Iplayer outside the UK. You can use Real Player or Windows Media to listen - I don't have the Real Player link but this is the Windows one

well, with the loss of Clement Freud, I'm assuming that Clement's mantle of the competitive player is being taken up by both Sue and Gyles, because that was how Clement was like during the early days of the program and throughout much of his time on the show but wasn't able to win too many of his appearances during the latter years of his life.

After all Dean, you did make the comment that there has to be some structure of competition in the program, because 'if everyone just got up and started telling jokes, the show would lose structure and just become silly'.

I did think her comment on sportspeople' s lack of personality as a sweeping generalisation but a lot of comedy does the same.

Cheers

kJ (Naughton)

Lapsedcat,

It’s pointless you trying to post a clever (to you) response, when it’s clear you have either misread my mail or incorrectly interpreted the contents.

You know that I don’t give a fig about the sexual proclivities of La Perkins or anyone else, don’t you?  You don’t?  Well, now you do.

The sentence concerned was constructed to help make the point, but with specific words chosen for comic affect.  If that missed the mark with you, then you know how I feel when I listen to SP, however I don’t consider myself a failure as I’m not being paid for it.

Sandy Toksvig I have loved and admired in everything she has been in, both on radio and tv.

Hope that answers all your concerns.

If you need any more help or advice, please let me know.

Steve

Always interested to read the varied comments on shows - I must say I like sue perkins.

A scoring quibble: I know the scores aren't important and sometimes sections may be cut out so the scores aren't always sequential. But in this one Sue was a point behind at the start of the identified final round. She then did a very good solo minute, so got the point plus the bonus: but ended 2 points ahead of Graham.

What's that about?

my guess would be the idiot girl that also has to blow the whistle can't keep track of the score either.  I swear, ever since Janet Staplehurst left they can't get girls to blow the whistle properly or keep the score.  they might as well get Samantha from ISIHAC to keep the score.

Another, less contentious, explanation may be that they record more rounds than get broadcast. So when a round is edited out there is bound to be a discontinuity in the scoring. This happens in the majority of panel games, from Clue to Mock The Week to QI.

Cheers

You should have made it clear when you mentioned Clue, that you were not referring to scoring but to the editing out of recorded content.  There hasn’t been any scoring in Clue since Noah was a boy.  I can just imagine many people having read your post, listening again to old programmes in order to “discover” the scores!

Another, less contentious, explanation may be that they record more rounds than get broadcast. So when a round is edited out there is bound to be a discontinuity in the scoring. This happens in the majority of panel games, from Clue to Mock The Week to QI.

no scoring, just plenty of references to it, and possibly Britain's best-known scorer!!!!!

I've been following the score since I was a kid and it's always been an exercise in frustration to get the same score as they have on air. You have already listed all the main reasons. I rather think they edit it more carefully than they used to. But it's lucky there's no cash prize!

Hi

I agree that that can happen - but as I noted, Nic announced the final round and the score is - never having been to a recording, is it possible he announces more than one final round?

On this week's show - which featured the same panel as the one being talked about below and which was recorded at the same time - the scores before the final round were that Sue Perkins was one point ahead of Graham Norton. Yet after the final round Graham was one point ahead of Paul who was ahead of Sue, despite Graham having not made a scoring contribution to the final round - Paul spoke for the full 60 minutes, the only challenge in this was an incorrect one from Tony.

So it looks to me like the final rounds have been swapped between these two shows. This would explain the scoring anomoly in both shows.

It's a nice theory - but they didn't actually have the same panels and were recorded separately.

The show two weeks ago featured Paul, Graham, Sue and Liza Tarbuck, the one this week had Tony Hawks in for Liza
