Topic: This has never happened before...

The phrase 'this has never happened before' is something often bandied about by Nicholas who seems to suffer from severe selective memory. Which is not surprising considering that there were times when he seemed able to recall events from shows that happened 25 years ago, yet had trouble remembering something that happened 5 seconds ago.

When it comes to this phrase, it very often refers to when a situation arises where a certain panelist that normally does exceptionally well, like say Clement Freud, would be in 4th place.

I think the very first time something like that occurred was in an episode from the early 70's when Nicholas pretty much went out of his way to make sure that Clement stayed in 4th place even though he had legitimate challenges against the others.

He also made reference I think in a fairly recent episode, I'm not sure from which year, but in which both Clement and Gyles were on the panel together and Nicholas commented that its the first time that two ex members of Parliament have been on the show together and that its never happened before. And Clement rightly points out that what Nicholas just said was utter rubbish, in that Clement and Gyles have been on the panel together many times in the past, and Nicholas tries to cover up his mistake by saying that its the first time he noticed or acknowledged it.

any other examples of this overused phrase in Just a Minute?

In the "Briefs" episode
( bury st Edmunds with tony slatter Wendy R/ clement & paul m)

Nicholas makes a big deal about the fact there was 10 challenges in One round and said it never happened before
- I seem to remember having come across a show from the Kenneth Wms era that there were as many challenges and nicholas mentions it- but I am not sure- my mind is going these days LOL

Oh and yes another example of is when 2 lights on in front of nicholas and he is not sure whose came on first- or there are lights but No buzzer or Buzzer and no Lights. Miriam

good call, the thing with two lights coming on at the same time or a light has come on with no buzzer, or a buzzer comes on with no light.  Those are great instances that do happen occasionally, but again are instances when Nick says 'its never happened before'.

There was one particular reversal of this instance where he states in one episode from either the late 90's or early part of the year 2000 or possibly 2001, I'm not sure, that Graham Norton has been in the lead and has won on a few occasions, when Graham counters by saying 'I've never been in the lead nor have I ever won a game'.  I would think Graham would be a better judge of those instances to be honest.  :)

I can remember that exchange and I'm pretty sure at the time, it was Graham who was in error. But let's not go on about it further unless you can actually point to the show where it was said.

Over the years you've raised again and again Nicholas's various errors. To be fair you have given us a decent break from your favourite subject, but we are already almost at the point of exhausting interest in this.

Nicholas makes mistakes as we all do. His memory is unreliable as all memories are. Unless someone can think of an example that is in some other way amusing or interesting, I think we should leave it at that.

Fair enough.

There was one particular instance where I believe the panelists were Clement Freud, Tony Hawks, Jeremy Hardy and Sue Perkins, and that was one of my favorite shows where essentially Sue, Jeremy and Tony managed to go three consecutive rounds by going the full 60 seconds, and Nicholas enthusiastically proclaimed that not only was it something that had never happened before, but that they were making history as well.

That was definitely one of my favorite instances, because it was absolutely true and I was absolutely delighted. in all the years the show has been on the air, there has never been an instance where there have been four consecutive rounds where a panelist was able to go the full 60 seconds.  I am eagerly awaiting that moment, although its very unlikely to happen in the near future.  But, one lives in hope.  :)

As it happens, I've just recently listened to Tim Rice's first appearance on "Just a Minute", going back to 1980. He appeared alongside Kenneth, Derek, and Peter, and at the end of the half hour all four panellists had the same number of points (Peter thanks in part to incessant interruptions by Kenneth during a round on carrier bags which led Nicholas to, to borrow Dean's description from the transcript, shout at him in a voice louder than he has ever used on "Just a Minute" before or since). Nicholas claimed at the end that it was the first time all four panellists had finished equal at the end. I haven't checked to see if it truly was the first time the game finished in a four-way draw, although I wonder how many times it has happened?

Yes that's the only time there has been a four-way tie. A good question for a JAM trivia quiz!

Well, that episode in particular (one of my personal favorites) certainly marked the only time all the panelists finished equally.  Although what passes for finishing equally nowadays is very suspect, since he'll say that someone is in fourth place even though two people managed to finish equally in second place or there are two equal people in first place or some other such nonsense.
