I would like for a moment to talk about just how utterly spontaneous the show has become over the years. There are amazing moments that occur on Just a Minute that surprisingly are left in the recordings as they generate such incredible moments to be treasured and remembered.

Some of the most outrageously spontaneous moments reach back as far as the 1970's, one of the earliest examples I remember is apparently when Derek Nimmo was going through one of his anti-Nicholas tirades, the chairman actually got up and poured a glass of water over Derek's head.

Another example I think comes from another episode from the 1970's, it may have been from the same season of recordings, in which during another one of Derek's anti-Parson's tirades, Nicholas again tried to throw water onto Derek, but Derek seemed ready for it and had his own glass of water, but somehow or other the unfortunate person that got caught in the crossfire was Sheila Hancock.

From the 1980's there was one episode I think when the Original Foursome were together and there seemed to be a recurring reference or allusion to the fact that prior to the recording, Derek Nimmo had let off a stink bomb in the studio. In that same episode, Derek Nimmo proceeded to put a safety pin through his nose, and then shower himself with plastic snow.

The reactions from the audiences on these occasions are priceless.

More recently there have been incredible moments caught within the recordings, like one where Paul, Clement, Graham and Linda were panelists, they were Southwold I believe and one of the rounds in which Paul was speaking, apparently a pair of children were peeking through the doors of the theater and Paul stopped his talk to invite them inside.

I'm at the present attempting to get caught up with the series, so I'm curious if there were other spontaneous moments caught on the air during a Just a Minute recording.

I was always surprised that they didn't make more of Clement Freud's arrival 2/3 of the way through the episode that Iain Messiter ended up hosting. Nicholas made a veiled reference to it I seem to recall but they didn't really play it up at all, which I thought was a shame, there was probably a chance for something funny to come out of that.

I think this is one of the things that I love the most about Just a Minute, when they truly start responding to each other forgetting what's going on.

The moment that springs to mind is on the "Silver Minutes" tape from Episode 168, "The First of the New Season". They get into a huge arguement over whether or not Derek's buzzer was working and a 1 or 2 second delay and whether or not anyone was talking.

Nicholas gets into a complete fluster over the incident and blames Kenneth for the problem, and it was the one time he hadn't said anything. It's a wonderful moment, and I've taken the transcript from the website, and added on a bit at the end. Hope that's ok Dean. :)

NP: Clement you have three seconds on the first of a new series starting now.

CF: I...

BUZZ

NP: Peter Jones has challenged.

PJ: Hesitation. Didn't start quickly enough at all! Terribly slow!

NP: Not, not for you Peter, but I'm afraid quite enough for the game. Two seconds Clement on the first of a new series starting now.

CF: And therefore I'd like to greet everybody...

BUZZ

NP: Derek Nimmo?

DN: I haven't challenged.

PJ: It must have been a correct challenge because you said two seconds and he said nothing! First of all, it was three seconds...

DN: Well guess what, I did it! I pressed my buzzer a moment ago on the say, it didn't go on. This time I just had a little tentative one.

PJ: Are you blaming your equipment because you're falling down?

DN: My buzzer's no good! I've got a faulty buzzer! That's what I want to know...

KW: A bad workman always blames his tools! Yes!

PJ: Quite!

NP: Your buzzer's perfectly all right!

PJ: My point is...

NP: Yes, what's your point?

PJ: Clement had three seconds...

NP: Yes.

PJ: ...in which to make a speech...

NP: Yes.

PJ: ... and I buzzed...

NP: Yes.

PJ: ... for hesitation...

NP: Yes.

PJ: You then said now you've got two seconds....

NP: But during that second, he said something!

PJ: What did he say? Nothing! I mean...

NP: He did speak, he had a definite phrase, the full contents of which I can't remember, but he did speak...

PJ: You're the chairman and you can't remember what the last speaker said!

DN: It's going to be a rotten series, I can tell you!

PJ: I... you know, his buzzer isn't working, you can't remember, what chance have we got!

NP: We won't have a chance in hell if you keep up this much longer! Right, Peter, shut up, Kenneth.... err

KW: I haven't said anything!

NP: Shh..

DN: He's losing his nerve.

NP: I said ...

PJ: I'm not surprised.

NP: I said once the four ...

DN: I want my buzzer to be repaired

KW: Leave your buzzer out of this

NP: I said once the four boys get together, it's all against the chairman. Err ... Clement, err ... you've been very very restrained and very civilized. You have another point and one second to go, starting now:

CF: The end of a ...

George,
that is one of my favorite moments featuring the Original Foursome, and it definitely exemplifies the spontaneity of this program.  I think another one of my favorite moments comes from the late 90's, for the life of me I can't remember who was on the panel, but I believe Tony Hawks and Derek Nimmo were on the show together.  Derek was in the midst of talking about something, he made an incredible movement with his arms and knocks over the water, and then Tony challenges for 'clumsiness'.

I think another one of my favorite moments came from the first episode of the 2004 season, the panel was Paul Merton, Kit Hesketh-Harvey, Liza Tarbuck and Charles Collingwood, and at the moment the recording started, Charles still hadn't arrived.  And when Charles is due to start the second round, what they do is absolutely wonderful.  And then when he finally does show up, its again a wonderful moment.

Another one of my favorite moments comes from i think the 2006 season, I can't remember, maybe it was '07.  anyway, I think Ross Noble was on the panel, and I think the subject had something to do with 'mime' and after Nicholas pretty much said that mime wouldn't work on radio, Ross takes up the subject and for about 30 to 40 seconds does mime on the radio until Nicholas actually has to get up and physically stop him.
