All they have to do is give a bonus point if someone finishes 60 seconds without a valid challenge.

It's funny you say that - I've always thought that would be a good rule.

I'm not sure it happens often enough - or that the points are important enough - to make a real difference though.

What is the matter with you people? The game is "Just a Minute" not "Talk for a minute without anything happening". First the Daily Telegraph nearly destroyed our parliament its trying now to destroy Just a Minute!

Ok, that was an exaggeration.

I should think that they should reinstate the position that no challenges should be allowed for small words like 'we' 'he' she' 'in' 'on', etc.  but even back then it was something of a slippery slope where sometimes they would allow it, sometimes they wouldn't.  One thing I think they should definitely do is bar the challenge on repetition of 'I'.

regarding the notion of having points taken away for incorrect challenges, that i'm not so keen on.

There are some players whose constant stupid interruptions for a cheap point when nothing has happened do spoil some shows... stand forward Miss Perkins.

A change of the rules? WHY?
Being one of the "million listeners abroad", I admire N. Parsons for making this show with this minimalistic set of rules. I think he got a little bit mellow over the last years, stressing the point that "all are winners" etc. But the show needs players willing to compete (think of Sir Clement!)

OTOH, the low points of the current series may have been the two recordings with Tony Hawks, Josie Lawrence, Dave Gorman and Justin Moorhouse - here, the players were overly jealous.

But even the "low points" were very entertaining!

As for Sue Perkins: While I love JAM, my sister is not such big a fan - she thinks that the women at the show are discriminated against, especially when it comes to "the benefit of a doubt". Sue is a wonderful player, but sometimes, she seems to get a little bit frustrated.

That was my first rant on this forum. Therefore, I just want to add: Thank you all for your dedication, especially for uploading all the episodes. I know, it may be anathema, but I'm a post-Kenneth-Williams listener: I just like the "newer" episodes better.

Thanks again
Schnacken

thanks very much - excellent rant. I hope you post again soon.

The show is very different now to in Kenneth's day - I still adore Kenneth, but I can understand how he might not appeal to everyone...

why single Sue Perkins out for that, the same could be said about practically anyone on the show, including the late Sir Clement Freud.  During his later years leading up to his death, he seemed to make pointless interruptions all the time, many of which weren't all that clever and seemed always to be for a cheap point.

Steven is right to single her out, because she is among the worst, if not THE worst offender.

Robert, you lose all credibility if you try and compare the antics of La Perkins with those of Clement Freud’s.  The added value provided by Sir Clement’s other contributions made his “pointless” interruptions pale into insignificance.  Unfortunately for La Perkins, she doesn’t have much added value, so her “pointless” interruptions are more obvious.  To sum up, she isn’t in the same league as Freud.

The other thing about La Perkins that I find deeply irritating is that she is always trying to be “one of the lads”.  Lower her voice by an octave or so and you could believe she was a man.  As she calls herself an actress amongst other things, you would think that occasionally she could get in touch with her feminine side.

Of course it’s my opinion that anyone who thinks that Perkins deserves to have her performance compared with that of Freud loses credibility.

It’s always going to be a poster’s opinion unless the point of the post involves a fact that can be proven or otherwise.

Surely that goes without saying.

Ok?

I disagree.  Sue Perkins isn't the worst offender in making pointless challenges and interruptions.  Clement Freud was the only person I could think of at the moment, largely because during the latter years of his life, he did seem to make a lot of pointless challenges namely because he hadn't 'said anything yet'.

And I don't think Sue is trying to be 'one of the lads', she is trying to be 'part of the game'.

I rather like Sue's contributions, because they are entertaining and clever.  perhaps she's a bit trigger happy, but she's just keen to get in a say something, as are a lot of people.  At least Sue doesn't use a cheap tactic like stringing out endless lists of things that have no connection to the subject whatsoever the way Sir Clement used to do.  I mean honestly, 'Hartfordshire, Herodfordshire, Lancanshire, Manchester...'  that's not funny or clever.

There are some players whose constant stupid interruptions for a cheap point when nothing has happened do spoil some shows... stand forward Miss Perkins.

Thanks for your opinion Espen.

I had to smile at the irony of you mailing to the list rather than me
directly.

I suppose we all want our words of wisdom to be read by the masses.

And this is the point in the discussion where you should have
self-credibility enough to take this bickering OFF the list and mail the
victim directly.

Well you can think that you’re right about Perkins and so can I.  That’s done with then.

However, you seem to be in a minority of one re Freud’s listing.  The reactions of the audiences and the other panellists to Clement’s individual way of playing indicate to me that they did find it both funny and clever.  There was only one panelist who continuously bleated about the listing being unfair or whatever, and that was Wendy Richard.

The views of the majority aren’t always right but with their appreciation of Freud, the majority was spot on.

Steve,

You're fully entitled to your opinion of Susan Perkins (indeed, I'm sure I'm not wrong in recalling an earlier critique of her style which managed to shoehorn in a veiled reference to her sexuality), and some of what you say may be valid, but why all the vitriol? Did you go to school with her in Croydon or something?

Hello cat,

Nice to hear from you again.  You almost gave me the opportunity to make a joke about the fact that I went to a boys only school, but as it wasn’t in Croydon, I shan’t bother.

First of all I’d like to point out for anybody who might be interested that Espen and I have cleared up our little misunderstanding off-list.

Now, you ask, “why all the vitriol?”  What you call vitriol, I call plain speaking served sometimes with a garnish of sarcasm.

Enough said except for two things I have to ask.

Some months back, a number of posts appeared here containing views and opinions that were unjust, rude, unkind and even cruel about Nicholas Parsons.  Did you ask that poster, “why all the vitriol?”?  If not, why not?

Hello Steve,

I think each of us has a different approach to this sort of thing. Whilst I don't think anyone used those exact words, I think that similar sentiments were expressed by some (myself included) and, hopefully, the point was (eventually) made.

Cheers

kJ
