Re: Gyles Brandreth - a lazy player?

I have to agree that Gyles has a tendency to fall back on a lot of worn out material.  hearing things about 'This is the chair Schmidt sat in when he was shot' was clever the first few times, but hearing it again and again as the years have gone on, along with some of his other well known material is pushing it quite a bit in my view.

I think Gyles is definitely very clever and witty as well, which is why its sad that he feels that he has to fall back on this sort of material in order to keep going on a subject.

Thinking that it was time for another heated debate (The Sue Perkins one having being fun to read), what are one's thought on Gyles Brandreth?

I have enjoyed his performances many times, and know that he has been playing for many years (since 1982). I love his erudition and style generally, but I find him a very lazy player.

So much of his material is constantly re-used, so much so that I have a quiet bet with myself which of his tired routines will make a re-apperance when he is on the show.

For example...

"Billy Bunter... Oh crikey, yaroo etc"
"The nod as good as a wink/blind horse speech"
"Ophelia Balls"
"Lord Finchley and the electric light..."
"Hamlet/omlette"
"Changing his hair colour like his party leader"
"How the people spoke..."
"The Swiss kiss"
"Mighty oaks/nut like you speech"
"The dog Fido/Phydeaux"
"Lord Longford's porn committee"

And so on, and so on, and so on.......... .

He has a fine brain, and a cutting wit, but can sometimes be a disappointing player.

Any thoughts?
