It is also an episode that does not appear to be included in the Transcription Services recording series. It falls between 340 (TS311 A Hoax) and 343 (TS312 Encouragement). This reduces the chances of a full copy surfacing as the TS recordings are the versions of the older shows that are still being broadcast in far flung parts of the world like Australia. Typically, the TS recordings have been cut from close to 30 minutes for the original Home Service broadcasts to either 27 minutes or 25 minutes, usually by leaving out a whole round or two. In the case of 239, the original broadcast started with the subject Peanuts while the TS Version started with the second round 'Fowl' (or perhaps 'Foul'?).

This opens up a whole new level of refinement for collectors to identify the differences between the two versions, particularly as the TS version edits sometimes left in parts that were removed from the original Home Service / Radio 4 versions.

Unfortunately, it also means that for a full version to surface it will have to come from a recording made at the time of the original broadcast in 1984.

So keep scouring attics and garages for boxes of 25 year old recording tapes. You never know what might turn up!

Martin

We knew Marie Celeste was the first subject and were missing only nine seconds of the first round so I made up the intro - Nicholas almost always uses the same words - and some words for Kenneth based on what he is challenged for and what he says immediately after. But as I say, we are missing only nine seconds of the first round.

I'd like to get my hands on some of those tapes Paul Merton made in his bedsitter in the early 80s! Who is up for asking him if they still exist at the Edinburgh festival?

Not that it helps, but I did a thorough FTP and WWW search for JAM's Marie Celeste, but the only version in existence is the incomplete one.

But I like a good challenge ;-)

There is a rather large torrent-collection (not ftp) that contains a
rather parge, but quite messy and unsorted collection of JAM episodes,
did you check that one out?

It was this torrent that formed the basis of my collection (prior to
discovering the JAM Yahoo group) and the interesting thing about this
collection is that a few of the shows comes from a different (and often
better sounding) source than the recordings available on this groups
link page.

Worth browsing through, if you got the time and patience (it *is* a
messy collection, tags missing, etc).

Yep.  All of the available torrents had the incomplete version.  I even tried various OTR sites and the Internet Archive.

Just in case anyone else is curious about this collection, the torrent
in question is found here:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3647595/Just_A_Minute_%28BBC-Radio%29

With 405 files at 4.4 gb it's quite large but has a few interesting files.
