Much bad could be said about Windows media player, but Microsoft is at least consistent in their work and ensure their media player is just as bloated, uncooperative, arrogant and downright *stupid* as their other web applications.
I have no computers with windows nearby so I can't get this confirmed right now but I would bet my tresured collection of RC cars that the Microsoft player will accept the stream if you do not distract it with anything else than the port number, hence:
