Terrific idea, thanks Espen. Couldn’t get it to agree
with Windows Media Player but on iTunes it works a treat.
Matt
Just as an experiment I've put up shoutcast
server that streams JAM
continuously as long as it's connected to the net. On the playlist is
every episode from 1980 up until today, in random order just to add to
the excitement ;)
If you want some background entertainment the address to the stream is:
http://stream.beatradar.com:8005/listen.pls
Or search for "Just a Minute" at www.shoutcast.com
or in your favorite
media player.
Server info found here:
http://stream.beatradar.com:8005/index.html
If you do try to connect it would be cool if you mailed me a quick mail
just to say if it was successful or choppy/no audio.
The server itself is nothing more than one of those tiny Asus EeePCs on
a *wireless* connection, two walls away from the router so this is
indeed a test on "how low can you go"... :D

Thanks alot for that user feedback, Matthew.
Much bad could be said about Windows media player, but Microsoft is at
least consistent in their work and ensure their media player is just as
bloated, uncooperative, arrogant and downright *stupid* as their other
web applications.
I have no computers with windows nearby so I can't get this confirmed
right now but I would bet my tresured collection of RC cars that the
Microsoft player will accept the stream if you do not distract it with
anything else than the port number, hence:

i remember there was a Whose Line is it Anyway website, i think it was called the Idiotsite.com or something like that, that used to do the same thing. well, they used to stream random clips from various segments of Whose Line, both the original UK version and the one as done by Drew Carey. mostly the clips were ones that could be easily translate to the audio medium, like many of the song styles and so on. it was awesome, i hope this works just as well. :)

It's fun to read the enthusiasm about a JAM webradio! As I said
initially the stream as it is today is not a permanent solution, it's
just me having one of those "what if I... Would that even work ?"
moments.
But it's no problem for me to move the stream to a suitable server if
that's wanted! And even cooler, If some of you have the skills and
motivation to create some radio jingles, promoting the yahoo group,
deans website and such things, that'd add some personality to the
station. :)

I did mention the MS media player URL in some mail earlier, but should
of course also have added instruction on how to start the player.
The description your reader gave on how to listen using Real player is
relevant for all players, that's how you open the stream in any player
(with the exception of microsoft media player, that require a slightly
different address). I should have included such an instruction in my
first mail, sorry about that.
It is also easy to embed the stream into a webpage so that it starts
playing whenever someone visit that page.

Sure!
But before we go any further I need to do a proper setup of our newborn
JAM station. I do not think you guys fully realize the fragility, or
even insanity, of the current server. We are talking about a tiny, pink
colored(!) 10" laptop located on my bedside table on a wireless
connection. It's regular use is limited to being an mp3 player and
web/mail reader. It really is quite a compliment to it's operating
system (Linux) that this works at all.
If we are to go public with this station I should also repair or remove
the poor quality/incomplete recordings from the playlist.
I'll get back to you when things are ready for launch ;)

Personally I'm not too worried about that, if I were BBC I'd consider it
to be just free promotion for one of their shows. Especially if I make
sure to give credit where credit is due in the announcement/description
of the webradio. After all it's only reruns, they still got to air the
new episodes.
But if so happens then worst case scenario is that I receive a mail
where they ask me to shut it down. *shrugs*
... I could still create a stream that's just available for the list
members ;)

Interesting information and a very good poinyt of course. I guess that
settles the doubts about this and we can proceed. :)
This is just one of the very nice things that can be said about most
public (non commercial driven) radios, they are not so lawer happy or
egoistic about their material, but have a different attitude towards
their work.

No that does not seem to be neccesary, judging from the server logs
everything appears to be fine. An update to the blog post may be needed
when the station is moved to a different server cause I will likely
change the port used (the 8005 number in in the address) then.

I'm not sure that this does settle the doubt.
The difference between Have I Got News For You on Youtube and "JaM Radio" is that the BBC makes money from releasing JaM on CD whereas there's a very limited commercial market for HIGNFY. As soon as "JaM Radio" is seen as a threat to the BBC's commercial interests, however small, you'll know about it.
I'm not familiar with what happens in Espen's country with regard to "take down notices" but I'd suggest Espen reads up on it, just in case.
I wish you luck and I hope that your service is tolerated by the BBC as it's a great idea. Just be prepared for the alternative.

Well HIGNFY is just an example - point is that there is
a lot of BBC TV now on YouTube including a lot of material that DEFINITELY IS
for sale on DVD, indeed a lot of stuff that has clearly been copied from DVDs.
And if we are talking about copyright breaches, my website should be taken down.
Our file sharing is also a breach.
And even if the point is commercial value, there is no
commercial value in what Espen is doing. The BBC is not going to set up a
24-hour JAM station.
Almost everything on YouTube is a copyright breach of
some sort unless you are uploading your home video. That YouTubne continues
to thrive sends some sort of message, I think.

Hi Dean,
I completely agree with you about your site and our shared files being a breach of copyright. The question is whether the copyright holder is willing to tolerate it. The BBC tends to be fairly tolerant of "fans" or "enthusiasts" sharing material. But it is their right not to be tolerant and, in a very few occasions in the past, they've taken that right and threatened legal proceedings.
It matters not what we "barrack room lawyers" say or think; it's when or if the letter from the real ones arrives. Espen should be doing this with eyes wide open and with knowledge of what might happen. Hopefully it won't and, for what it's worth, I think the BBC will probably be fine with it as it's non-commercial. But maybe they'll decide to act. As a certain youth organisation says, "be prepared".
Cheers

It should also be added that it is *very* easy for the copyright owners
to get content removed from youtube, youtube has a policy that's pretty
much "remove first, ask later".
Anyhow, I do not think we should worry too much about this. If it
someday gets shut down then so be it. In the meantime, let's enjoy the ride.
I've had a busy weekend but I'll move the streamer to a better server
someday this week. But are there any suggestions on what we should call
the station?
I've been thinking about "The JAMmer", since it's both a reference to
JAM and a broadcast term (jammer, disrupting enemies transmissions). But
then again, "Dean Stream" also has a certain ring to it... ;)

Thank you very much for this info, Kirsty! I'll check the stream with
VLC when it's moved to it's permanent location. I suspect it is my
fault, I did ramp up the served buffer size to compensate for the
wireless instability. It could be that VLC chokes then.
If anyone else experience any sort of problem with the stream then
please do as Kirsty did: A short description of the problem and the name
of the software being used. Our goal is crystal clear: JAM to the
people, regardless of software or platform! :)

Just to add a little more fuel to the fire, YouTube rarely, if ever, has entire episodes uploaded to it.
That can make a big difference to contravening copyright laws.
As said before, let's hope push doesn't come to shove as we say.

I'm not sure that this does settle the doubt.
The difference between
Have I Got News For You on Youtube and "JaM Radio" is that the BBC makes money
from releasing JaM on CD whereas there's a very limited commercial market for
HIGNFY. As soon as "JaM Radio" is seen as a threat to the BBC's commercial
interests, however small, you'll know about it.
I'm not familiar with
what happens in Espen's country with regard to "take down notices" but I'd
suggest Espen reads up on it, just in case.
I wish you luck and I hope
that your service is tolerated by the BBC as it's a great idea. Just be prepared
for the alternative.

Don when you say YouTube rarely has whole shows posted
to it, well.....
These are just some of the things I have on my
favourites list - but these just happen to be my interests. You can
watch many many shows on YouTube - in full - often within minutes of
them being broadcast. I watch Graham Norton Show, HIGNFY and the American
series The View every day/week this way.
It is a fascinating thing that YouTube gets away
with this - indeed the BBC itself posts on its own channel http://www.youtube.com/user/BBC -
many other broadcasters do likewise.

To be honest, the whole of YouTube should be closed down based
on the new Digital bill.
However, Google is far too big a company and they’ll find a
loophole to allow it.
This is a fab idea to stream the episodes.
Really good job Espen.

Long time lurker in America (Denver, Colorado) and I need to tell you,
the JAM stream is fantastic! I work at home, so I can listen to
whatever I want, and the JAM stream is my new favorite radio station.
Thanks for doing that. I also set up the stream on my Blackberry, so I
can drive around with it!
Also, at the risk of copyright infringement or whatever, my local comedy
improv group has started playing Just A Minute at our monthly shows, at
my behest, and the audience really enjoys it. Most of the show, the
players play different goofy characters in different goofy scenes, but
for JAM, we pull up chairs in front of the audience and let the
light/sound guy play Nicholas Parsons' part, and we play JAM as
ourselves. It's a nice change of pace for an improv show, and our
audience has become quite fond of it.
Back to lurking.

I think rules of games cannot be copyrighted, so you'll be completely clear if you change the name slightly. Not that I think you should worry.

My friends and I have played the game complete with light panel and buzzers at a few local Sci fi/British Media conventions.
( rigged up by a techie friend)
Also I have been told that it is a regular feature at the big Doctor Who Convention in California at which some of the Guest play

I tried running the JAM stream in VLC a few days ago and it worked fine.
I just tried to run it again and it's asking me for username and password.
Anyone else getting this ?
Is this correct ?
If so, what are they ?

Apparently the server is down right now. I am not sure why and is on
holiday at the moment so I can't look into it before I'm back in town
on monday. (Security settings prevent me from administrating it from
outside the local network)
