Hello Steve,

Personally I use IPDL to download MP3s and MP4s (video) from iPlayer. It runs on Windows and works by pretending it's an iPhone - hence getting protection-free files. Google "ipdl" if you want details.

Well done to all those chipping in with LapsedCat's requests. Good to see the old community spirit up and running! And having multiple people with copies of files is useful in case of disaster.

I think both the latest series of The Unbelievable Truth and Mark Steel's In Town were well worth listening to and possibly the best series of both. I have the MP3s of both as well so if anyone gets stuck then just shout.

Incidentally, and on a different subject, I'm led to believe that the new series of "Clue" starts on 21 June. I hope to be able to make MP3s available for that as well.

You'll just have to try the solutions and see how you get on.

I'm running Windows 98, so I've no information about Windows 7. And the page
I mentioned to you contains solutions that are optimised for Windows 98.


Because Windows XP has a method for emulating Windows 98 (or so I'm told,
I've never used XP) the solutions outlined on the page in question should
be capable of working under XP, if they're run in its "Windows 98 mode" (I'm
sure that's not the correct term, but hopefully you get the idea).

Alternatively, I'm told by a knowledgeable friend that Windows XP/Vista/7
are capable of running Windows 98 in a "box" (a virtual machine), just like
we Win98 users run DOS in a DOS box, thanks to a free download available
from Microsoft called "Microsoft Virtual PC 2007".

If you're running Windows 7, provided you don't install the Windows XP Mode
and Windows Virtual PC updates on it, you can install and run Microsoft
Virtual PC 2007 instead (Windows Virtual PC is not meant to be run as an
application like Microsoft Virtual PC 2007).

Apparantly, by installing Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 you can create multiple
virtual hard drives and run multiple legacy operating systems on XP, Vista
or 7. (I saw a demo of 32-bit Windows XP running within Microsoft Virtual PC
2007, on an HP Pavilion x64 system that was running something called
'Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit' - whatever that is.)


Alternatively (here's yet another alternative), I gather that other
operating systems (such as Win98) can be run on a Windows Virtual PC on
Windows 7, in theory. But I couldn't follow the explanation - sorry.

Hey! I only use Windows 98. You're lucky I understood even this much! :-)

Hello Steve,

I have no reason to think that IPDL won't work but, like The Clitheroe Kid (TCK), I have no way of trying it on Windows 7.

The direct link to the Windows version is at http://po-ru.com/projects/iplayer-downloader/#windowsgui so I can only echo TCK's suggestion of just trying it. But please read the rest of this page as there are limits on what it can download and where you can use it from because of limitations on iPlayer itself. These will probably also apply to TCK's methods as well.
