In the BBC News's history of JaM (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/534931.stm) it says that "the (JaM) concept was sold to a US TV company" before it appeared on the BBC. Does anyone know any more about this? Or even if it got aired? Similarly for the "commercial radio station in Johannesburg" where it aired before even that?

Cheers

On the South African thing, Ian Messiter talks about it in his book. He was working in South Africa at the time.

Wow. Im shocked to be honest because i have always felt that JAM was a primarily British institution. Most Amerian adaptations of programs and concepts conceived in other countries rarely make a smooth transition. Largely because something inevitay gets lost in translation.
Im not sure how well an Americanized version of JAM would do. WHOSE LINE did well for a little while only because the original UK version did do a few episodes in America to test the waters of how well it would be received. JAM may have had the rare instance of having an American as a panelist, but they never traveled beyond the UK for JAM recordings. I doubt very much many American comedians would be so well composed having to adhere to rules like no repeating, no hesitating and no deviating. Plus there`s the profanity barrier hat would be well and truly crossed and would have the censoring people working overtime.

Under the oringinal title "One Minute Please" the show was aired on the USA TV in 1954 for one yr.

( I would have loved to see Ernie Kovacs doing the show)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046632/

I don't see any info on if any copies of the show still exist- dean?

I know the original 'One Minute Please' was broadcast live, so no recordings would exist of it at all.  if the TV version exists, its probably on kinescope recordings.

There is a recording of One Minute Please somewhere - it has Ian Messiter on the panel. Someone here probably has it.
