As we journey through life, discarding baggage along the way, we should keep an iron grip, to the very end, on the capacity for silliness. It preserves the soul from desiccation.Humphrey Lyttleton 1921-2008 chairman of the radio panel game i'm sorry i haven't a clue and jazz musican .

Subject: [just-a-minute] Review - Giles Brandreth diaries

Some find Gyles Brandreth irritating; others admire his wit, erudition and tenacity. I was somewhere in the middle until I read his edited diary "something sensational to read in the train"*. To be honest, I still am (but I'm just much more inclined to give more weight to the positives).

Gyles has always been a high achieving and driven individual. Top exam results, Scholarship to Oxford, President of the Oxford Union, accomplished after dinner speaker, TV star and published author by 20, he ends the diaries by announcing that he is going to do one thing of quality before he dies. Passionate about Shakespeare, ballet and hi-brow culture, he has however spent a lot of his life in fluffy jumpers doing game shows. I'm not sure in these diaries whether he truly recognises that this is due to choices that he himself has made and that he has made these choices because he has chosen to value money highly. He does recognise that his passion for doing lots of different things means that he is unlikely to excel at any one thing.

Boy, has he tried to do many things. The breadth of his activities is astounding. Businessman, prolific writer**, theatre impresario, politician, TV interviewer, biographer to Prince Philip, tireless after dinner speaker, charity worker etc etc. This man works hard indeed; it's in his genetic make-up and he believes that he's only happy if he continues to do so.

Gyles appears to be a very honest individual, both ethically and in his judgement and observations on himself and others. He has a great strength in disambiguating his version of what happened from his wider analysis on why and how it happened. One of his strongest traits is his non-judgemental attitude to others. He will gossip about others, but does so typically by looking for and finding the positive aspect of the other person's character. One gets the feeling that Gyles has probably edited the diary to spare the feelings of others. He doesn't do this however to spare his own feelings and some of the diary is a little uncomfortable to read, especially the early years. I would have been inclined to edit out some aspects of the diary that didn't show me in a positive light. He hasn't, and that's to his great credit.

This desire to see the good in others also restricts his effectiveness in some areas. He is a hopeless politician. He aspires to be Home Secretary (so that he can implement prison reform), but the diary is littered with his poor judgements about others (Archer, Neil Hamilton, Hurd).

He makes a few references to Just a Minute, and he seems to know just about everybody who has ever played Just a Minute (he wrote for example Kenneth Williams' Acid Drops). He held the joint worked record with Nicholas Parsons for after dinner speaking (adjacent rooms) etc etc. Some of the new guard are not mentioned, but this is because the diaries stop, somewhat abruptly, in early 2000.

Gyles knows everybody with any fame in the UK (and many outside the UK too). He has outstanding stories too; ones that will make you laugh uproariously in a train. The stories are enough to warrant you buying the book, but there is more than that too. Gyles has had a successful life. This is not due to fame and achievement (which he shows are transitory and largely worthless), but to the fact that he has a very successful marriage, multiple very close relationships and seemingly happy children.

Gyles both values good entertainment in others and seeks to provide it to others. He has done this in these diaries and I recommend them highly. They will make more sense to those from the UK, but it can be enjoyed by anyone. I read it on kindle; and they are available from Amazon.

Geraldine Jones is perhaps one of the most underappreciated females to appear on the program. She was part of a quartet of regular females brought in to mix it up with the three regular fellas during the late 60`s along with Andree Melly, Sheila Hancock and Aimi MacDonald. She was absolutely wonderful, as she was very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. She was also given the honor of being the first female chairman before Andree Melly. Much like Andree Melly i feel she wasnt given the benefit of the doubt often enough and was also treated rather shoddily in some respects. Example, during the subjrect of "Getting the Best of an Argument", no sooner does she open her mouth to say that no one gets the best of an argument by arguing is she challenged for deviation by Clement Freud and even after she tried to defend what she was trying to say, she still had the subject wrongly taken away from her. Amongst some of my favorite moments involving Geraldine had to be when she spoke on 'The Times I Wear My Bikini', and seemed rather modest about her good looks, and comparing the moments of wearing a bikini to when nuns mortify their flesh with those whips and belts of thorns. I loved her brand of observational humor during 'Buying Lipstick', in talking about the terrifying experiences of trying to get lipstick by confronting the Great Dragon at the cosmetics counter. She also showcased a pension for utilizing surreal imagery and poetic language when talking on subjects like 'Castles in the Air' or even 'My Adventure'. What I didn't like was how she essentially put down for deviation during that subject for talking about having a set of wax wings. Although it was nice for Kenneth to defend Geraldine so admirably, pointing out that she hadn't deviated from the subject and was at liberty to talk about wax wings, and whether or not someone believes that what she was saying is true or not is completely irrelevant. I also loved how I think it was during her final appearance, she was given full reign during the subject of 'My Worst Moment' and spoke from the heart about how unfair she had been treated on the program in the past. Geraldine looked to be set for a long run with the program as it entered the 1970's... unfortunately, she mysteriously disappeared in early 1970, one year before another Jones named Peter was brought onto the program, and she has never been heard from since. This is definitely a real shame because people remember people like Kenneth Williams, Derek Nimmo, Peter Jones and Clement Freud, and even now Sheila Hancock, but no one speaks with any reverance or fondness or even pays lip service to the early pioneers of the program, like Geraldine Jones. She was the original Jones to appear on the program before Peter, and the fact that no one seems to know anything else about her after her mysterious disappearance is just a crime and a real shame.

If one is interested in Geraldine Jones, and the only reason I am is because I was interested why she stopped being on the programme if she was so good, then the link below may be illuminating.

For those not interested, she fell for a German in 1970 and moved to Germany.

KJ you are awesome. You managed to solve the mystery that not even Dean was able to solve: whatever became of Geraldine Jones? I wasnt even sure anyone knew what happened. I thought it was gonna be one of those enduring mysteries like like Jimmy Hoffa, Jack the Ripper, and Lord Lucan.

Topic: Stephen Fry's memoirs

Message 10 / 100
OzSep 4, 2010

Just seen an ad on the TV that his memoirs are being serialised in the Sunday Times starting tomorrow. Presumably they will also become a book. I do hope he does an audio version. I'm a huge fan of audio books and Stephen Fry is the best reader I've ever heard, although Tom Baker reading his own autobiography is excellent also. I do recommend it.

I've been trying for ages to get a copy of Clement Freud's EGO on audio book. By the time I realised such a thing existed all copies had been sold. I believe he reads it himself and I should think its even funnier than the book with Clement's dead pan delivery - shame its abridged as most BBC audio books are.

I remember him taking two months off from Twitter saying that he was writing the second part of his autobiography, picking up where "Moab is my Washpot" left off.

I *think* he did say it'll be out this Christmas, but I may have made that up simply because I want it to be so! Been waiting for the sequel for years!

Topic: The JAMmer + when is recording of next shows?

Message 20 / 100

A kind member of this mailing list has reminded me that the final
address of the Just A Minute web stream turned out to be slightly
different than what I posted a while ago.
The correct and final address to the stream is:

http://stream.beatradar.no:8007

Attached with this mail is a file with updated link to the feed. Save
and double click it should work for most (I think?). Don't hesitate to
mail me if you got any problems connecting.

Finally, just a reminder that this stream and thousands of others are
easily found on the shoutcast webpage:
http://www.shoutcast.com
Search for "just a minute" to find our stream, you can even use their
player to listen to it. They really got a good service running there.

***

Something completely different: Anyone know when the next recording of
JAM is going to take place? I just *have* to get over to England to see
at least one show live before Nicolas is too old, I do share those
worries with others who has mentioned this.

I am very curious about the timing of the next season.

As I posted a while back, Nicholas told my friend Keith they were going to three seasons a year of eight shows each. This season is just eight shows. So if what was said is right - and it may not be - that suggests the next season could start in December, rather than the New Year. Those who would like a Christmas-themed eppy may be in luck.

I think they will probably start recording shows in mid-November but ít's too early to be more definite than that. In all likelihood, they won't have confirmed dates for recordings yet.

Hello all,

Just for the sake of clarity, those dates are the ISIHAC theatrical tour and not the BBC recordings for the next broadcast series. If anything the likelihood of actual recordings taking place during the period of the theatrical tour is lower due to the obvious resourcing clash.

Hi all,

I am having serious problems with this weeks episode. The one I have downloaded from Radio Downloader wouldn't edit in Audacity but will play fine on everything I have thrown it in. This does mean that's this episode is unedited and has the tail end of the news and a little over run at the end of the show, I hope no one minds this. Secondly Mediafire is down for some reason so I have uploaded it to Rapidshare for now and once Mediafire is up and running again I will duplicate the upload there for continuity.

I know RS is a bit of a pain for some but if you don't want to wait it's there and if you don't mind waiting it will be up at mediafire at some point this week I am sure.

I find this to be a source of profound annoyance. The way Nicholas builds up this moment after a series of incorrect challenges garner a panelist a lot of points, or when someone has contributed greatly on a subject and is found to be speaking when the whistle goes, he does this big song and dance of how well someone has done. Heaping upon them praise upon praise and other accolades... And ruins the whole thing by saying that the panelist in question has leaped forward into 4th or 3rd place or is still in 4th or 3rd place. This has been a source of some great comedic moments, largely from some of the new breed of panelists who use every chance to take the mickey out of this overused and rather patronizing phrase.
but im curious about how others feel about this. Whats the overall opinion from the fans?

Personally, I like it. The instances I recall, Nicholas does this with panelists who have in fact done a good job in one way or another, to the entertainment of all. He compliments them that way and emphasizes the fact that it's not about the points. True that if he behaved that way with people in fact floundering and failing to contribute effectively to the game, it would be patronizing and annoying. That's not my perception of how it's used.

It's comes under the heading of 'typical British humour', no more, no less.
If you listen very carefully you will hear the (mainly British) audience laughing.

In particular 'irony' a humerous concept that is not understood on the other side of the pond.

I think it can be classed as 'situational irony' defined as 'the contrast between what happens and what was expected'.

Thanks Don. Obviously that sort of thing is more commonplace in the UK than here in the states. I know that sort of thing is meant to be funny, but I can't really fathom why that's supposed to be funny. perhaps I'm just a bit more sensitive or cynical when it comes to how things can be perceived. cuz, as I've stated, the whole thing just comes off as being a set up for success, and then the rug is pulled out from under you, and you're basically left as Kenneth would say 'omelet cer le visage', which I don't find funny, just humiliating.

I guess its because I have a very low tolerance for humiliation.

This goes hand in hand with a similar phrase that someone crept or crawled into 3rd place or some such nonsense.
nicholas would usually say this to Peter Jones, which tends to be rather denigrating. Especially since Nick only said it about Peter, never about any other panelist.

Well, regarding the chairman, I have already stated my thoughts and feelings about why I feel Nicholas doesn't make a good chairman on this program innumerable times. The problem I think stems from the fact that as I go back over the years, I continue to find all kinds of little things that fan the flames, if you like, of my overall opinion on Nicholas' unsuitability to be chairman. Sure, he's been chairman of Just a Minute for the last four and a half decades, but look at Fidel Castro. He installed himself as president for life of Cuba, and you can't really say he's doing the people of that island nation any good is he? Which just goes to show that being in a certain job for a long time doesn't necessarily make you any good at it. The main issue regarding Nicholas has to be that he isn't just content to let the moments of contribution or humor just be, he has to ruin the enjoyment of one and all by sticking his big fat stinking conk into everything with some inane comment that he likes to believe is a demonstration of his sharp wit, when it actuality his commentary comes out all flat and unenjoyable, like a bottle of ginger beer you leave at room temperature without the top on. If you were to read his ferago of a book 'The Straight Man: My Life in Comedy', you can instantly tell that it is a work of utter fiction, or as Nicholas would put it, a 'flight of pure fantasy'. It would have to be, because the anecdotes held within this tome seem to stem from the ramblings of a lunatic. And another thing... *WHISTLE*

Salford fans will be pleased to see that JAM is to record in their city on Tuesday October 19th. Some details here http://radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.6259

Paul is the only confirmed panellist but I see Graham Norton is taking part in another event at the festival, so he seems a likely participant.

Hi Dean,

Excellent news. A half-hour's drive from me. And just next to where the BBC are moving to at MediaCity. I saw a Clue recording at the Lowry Theatre some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it - it's a stunning venue. Here's hoping I can get hold of some tickets...

Incidentally, when I saw your link, I thought it said raintoday.co.uk which is a site showing the weather radar for the UK. I knew Salford and Manchester were famous for rain, but I thought they'd started announcing events on the weather site!

Cheers

Hi Miriam,

About 200 miles north-west of London. It's the twin city with Manchester if that helps you locate it.

The train takes about 150 minutes from London - that gets you into central Manchester and then you can take a tram to the Lowry direct from the train station.

Depending on when you want to travel you can get the train for around £40 (about $61) by booking in advance and travelling off-peak but if you have to pay full fare then it's closer to £240 (about $370).

Cheers

*Yay* Saw the recording at the Opera House a couple of years ago and been waiting for a return to Manchester(ish!) ever since!

Miriam:

Just to add.... You can usually get each way for about £11 in fact - I make the journey regularly on my jaunts to London! There are still some low price fares for that day, the only problem I can see is the return journey as the last direct train goes at just after 9pm. After that it takes about 7 or 8 hours and involves 2 or 3 trains.

You would be best off booking a night in a hotel in Manchester - I can't imagine hanging around Crewe train station for 3 hours in the middle of the night would be much fun :o)

Best of luck! If you need any more help with Manchester info just send me an email - I'd be happy to help.

Regards,

Catherine

Oops just noticed the recording time of 17:15 - thought it would be an evening thing!

That renders my point about return trains absolutely pointless! You will, of course, have no problems doing this as a day trip!

I will have to look into finishing early that day to get across town

*WHISTLE*

I'm bored on a Friday night, so I looked this ridiculous question up. The answer is 'long' (your only option involves the Trans-Siberian Railroad), and you have to get yourself to Ho Chi Minh City.

HCMC -> Hanoi: ~34 hrs
Hanoi -> Beijing: ~42 hrs (includes 3hr layover in Dong Dang at the border)
Beijing -> Moscow: ~151 hrs (just under a week!)
Moscow -> Köln -> Brussels -> London: ~63 hrs (this trip is well-documented)
Total: ~290 hrs, plus changing trains and whatnot, and then the train to Manchester (another 2-ish hrs, which should be peanuts by this point). You could maybe do it in two weeks (336 hrs), but why not take your time and stop off along the way?

It's also possible to train it from Singapore to Bangkok and thence take a short bus jaunt into Vietnam, or take a cruise ship (cargo ship?) from Sydney to Hong Kong or Singapore, but you're on your own for those. This page may be useful: http://www.seat61.com/Australia-overland.htm

Oh dear, I'm geeking out on the wrong material for this list, aren't I?

Thank you for the info- the trick will be getting the tickets to the show itself( and will they take an Overseas order?)
But I will look into it and if you or anyone else has any advice I will gladly listen. Believe me I will try anything to make this happen- I had fiqured that I would never even have the chance to go to a JAM recording and comforted myself with 2 of the Improv Shows with paul merton at the comedy club during my upcoming visit.

I was amusing myself at work wondering if Manchester has a "Life on Mars" tour LOL-been rewatching the series-( the usa version was bad!)

Hi Guys,

Yes, sure Nicholas isn't a good Chairman. But do we want a good Chairman? They never say he's the only Chairman we ever had, because he's not. A few others did the job for a change. I recall Kenneth was hopelessly confused and totally unfunny and indeed a bad chairman. Clement was authoritarian and humourless and if I recall correctly wrong on occasion. Sure Nicholas has had many cringeworthy moments. And sometimes these end up being excellent comedy. Like the fabled herbaceous border incident, where Paul challenged Clement when Clem stupidly said his herbaceous border could outwit an opponent. And Nic opposed the challenge stating that it was quite possible for a herbaceous border to outwit another. I laughed and laughed at that.

And would JAM be the same without the merciless taunts from Paul and Sue about his past as a drag queen on the docks, or in the slums of the east end or whatever.....I love those moments. I think the fans do to and that's why, as a special treat, they stick in a subject containing the word Chairman every so often.

I wonder if Dean has compiled statistics on wrong challenges incorrectly awarded, or correct challenges turned down (only those unintentional errors would count). I am sure if we regard Nic as bad for awarding points and the subject for a wrong challenge then we could equally become annoyed with Clem say, for making all those wrong challenges (e.g. challenging for words when they are, in fact, slightly different).

Anyway, the last message I sent disappeared. I will have to copy before I press send to ensure I have it should my Yahoo session time out.

I'm bored on a Friday night, so I looked this ridiculous question up. The answer is 'long' (your only option involves the Trans-Siberian Railroad), and you have to get yourself to Ho Chi Minh City.

HCMC -> Hanoi: ~34 hrs

Cheers

*WHISTLE*

How'd I do? :) I must be in the lead now! I must be in the lead now!

I still have 2 nights the comedy store with paul merton and a favorite actor Robert Lindsay is doing a play so I will be well entertained.

I couldn't agree more. At the very least keep an eye on the BBC Tickets website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/shows/tickets/radio or sign up for their newsletter) and the theatre's website (http://www.thelowry.com/).

The Lowry is a large theatre - one auditorium is 1,700+ seats and the smaller one 466 seats plus a 180-seat "studio space. There's at least a fair chance that they may have spare seats for the JaM show, especially if it's in the larger theatre.

Good luck!

Everyone here has these episodes already, but for the sake of keeping the collection current, I've refreshed http://www.mediafire.com/just-a-minute/ --

1. The new series' episodes have been added. With the exception of the first episode, these are all rips from iplayer->faad->audacity->lame identical to the steps I used in s56.

2. Steven Wickham's sources from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/just-a-minute/message/4167 have been spliced in to fill the gaps I was missing in those episodes. (Steven: I made the same mistake last year confusing the two "getting wound up" episodes... ;)

cheers,

Forgot to post that I heard from Claire Jones- the Recording may not happen- some kind of hold up but she expects it to be cleared up this coming week and I am to email her again and she would help me out.
Still keeping fingers crossed. Miriam

I thought this week's show was really good - laughed and laughed and laughed. And the previous week was really strong too.

We really have to have more of Ross Noble and Sheila Hancock - just great.

Sad there's no more for a bit - my pick is the show will be back on in November/December...

Slightly off topic, but the QI panel show started a new series on BBC TV this last weekend and the first show had four JAMmers on it: Ross Noble, Jack Dee, Phill Jupitus and, of course, Stephen Fry chairing.

I've posted the extended XL version if anyone wants to take a look: http://www.mediafire.com/?cfkz817m1ca9h - beware - it's a 45 minute show and a 160+MB download.

Cheers

I've very much enjoyed the recent broadcast of the third series of this show; I don't suppose anyone has the first two series and might feel inclined to upload them?

Always worth asking, especially as a few people here seem to have VERY extensive collections.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out!

Hiya Jeannette,

The only thing super secret (not very secret anymore) is my dumbness. I
forgot to add the 4th ep to the folder but that has now been rectified.
Everything is now up to date and all in order.

This is on "Listen Again" for the next 7 days. Unfortunately I don't have the hardware to capture this, but it looks quite interesting.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pdk2q

"Gyles Brandreth tells the tale of one of the most influential people you've never heard of - his great great grandfather, Benjamin. It's a story that takes us from Liverpool in the 1830s to New York, with a cast of hucksters, quacks, politicians, millionaires, and medics -- not to mention the founders of tabloid journalism and mass advertising. Benjamin Brandreth set sail from Liverpool in 1835 with nothing. By the time of his death in 1887 he was a New York senator, a landowner, the owner of one of New York's biggest hotels, and one of the richest men in the country. He had invented the giant billboard, financed Gordon Bennett's yellow press and developed mass advertising. How? Brandreth's vegetable pills! They were a powerful laxative. Brandreth claimed they could cure almost anything, he spent a fortune on advertising, and people believed him."

Hello Miriam,

I'm so pleased for you. :-) That's almost restored my faith that the BBC can do the right thing, even for a non-licence fee payer.

I'll be applying for tickets for the Lowry as well once the applications open tomorrow.

A piece of advice - start looking into the journey options from London to Manchester as soon as you can. The train is (much) cheaper if you buy in advance and the sooner you buy, the cheaper it is. From the conversation of a few weeks ago, I know there will be people who will help you navigate the sometime byzantine UK railway system and the multitude of options available to you. If you get stuck, just ask. I'm happy to help, but I must caution that I'm not an expert.

Cheers

Hello Miriam,

First of all, I'm keeping this on the group mailing list rather than having a private email discussion so that others can chip in and correct me or offer better suggestions.

Generally speaking you can get the best train fares going direct to the train company as they can offer special fares. In this case the major train operator is Virgin at http://www.virgintrains.co.uk The decent thing here is that they offer a service where you can buy a ticket and print it out at home. That can be cheaper and would mean you can print your tickets before you leave home and save having to collect them in London. Look at the bottom of their website for e-tickets.

There is another company running trains from London to Manchester - London Midland at http://www.londonmidland.com They don't run many trains (I think three a day each way as compared to two per hour for Virgin) and they're slower but they're cheaper.

Whatever you do, check the ticket conditions. Most cheap tickets are for the booked train only. Look for tickets containing the word Advance for this sort of ticket. If you miss your train, you have to buy another (more expensive) ticket so you need to be sure you can make the train before booking it. Off-peak don't pin you to a train but have restrictions on when you can travel. Open tickets get you on any train but are expensive. Standard class is fine for most people but if you fancy pampering and a "free" meal then First Class is an option.

The rail journey you need is London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. Once in Manchester, you can get the tram from underneath Piccadilly station to Harbour City and then it's a half-mile walk to the Lowry.

This sort of thing can be confusing and intimidating for those of us who are used to the system so please don't be afraid to ask.

I was a Mancunian (someone from Manchester) around 25 years ago so hopefully a more recent citizen can advise on the best place to go.

I suspect this might be the start of a rather long topic but I - and I'm sure many others - will be delighted to help. If nothing else to get you away from London for the day and see some more of the country!

Cheers

Hi Mirian

Make sure you book your train as soon as possible; you'll get the best price. I find www.thetrainline.com the best site for prices, but KJ might be right (so try his recommendations too). If everything is too expensive, you can always travel by bus from Victoria to Manchester.

I hope you have a good time.

Julian

Hello Miriam,

First of all, I'm keeping this on the group mailing list rather than having a private email discussion so that others can chip in and correct me or offer better suggestions.

Generally speaking you can get the best train fares going direct to the train company as they can offer special fares. In this case the major train operator is Virgin at http://www.virgintrains.co.uk. The decent thing here is that they offer a service where you can buy a ticket and print it out at home. That can be cheaper and would mean you can print your tickets before you leave home and save having to collect them in London. Look at the bottom of their website for e-tickets.

There is another company running trains from London to Manchester - London Midland at http://www.londonmidland.com. They don't run many trains (I think three a day each way as compared to two per hour for Virgin) and they're slower but they're cheaper.

Topic: Richard herring: on and off topic

Message 97 / 100

Richard Herring appeared on a couple of JAMS. He is a very hard working commedian who has live shows, 2 weekly podcasts with Andrew Collins (one from Radio 6, the other recorded in their attic or at live shows) and another podcast As It Occurs To Me (AIOTM) (both free). His humour can be confrontational and extremely rude, so may not appeal to JAMMERS. However he has a BBC4 series coming up Richard Herring's Objective which could well be worth a listen (possibly something like Jeremy Hardy's ones) and I would be interested if anyone happens to download/upload it.

But back onto topic, he has a daily blog which included this in the most recent (http://www.richardherring.com/warmingup/warmingup.php?id=2897)
I was tired enough without the stress and exercise though and worried that I might not be on top form for the recording. We headed out to do some vox pops to find out if English people knew when St George's Day was. On the way out we bumped into Nicholas Parsons who was at the Beeb doing some interviews for his new book. Coincidentally I had just that morning watched a clip of Nicholas on The Arthur Haynes show and yet here he was forty or fifty years later, still on the go. He is 87 next week and yet has a work ethic and a schedule that seems to put even me to shame. But he remembered me (asking about my moustache) and asked me what I was up to. I told him about the series and that we'd already done the moustache and the hoodie. "What did you do about the Goodies?" he asked. I wished I had been trying to reclaim the Goodies, but corrected his mishearing. He slightly sadly recalled that the Goodies (amongst many others) had joked about him in their series. "I am sure it was affectionate," I said.

"Oh no, it wasn't!" replied Mr Parsons.

I laughed, because he was almost certainly correct, but said "Yes, but where are the Goodies now, Nicholas? And you're still going strong."

He is a remarkable man and although he has certainly had his knockers if you listen to him on Just a Minute or are lucky enough to get a chance to have a chat with him, you will know how lively his mind is. Even though he had been complaining mildly about all the interviews his publisher was putting him through, he had a lot to say on the subject of Englishness and pretty much insisted that we interview him about it. In the end we couldn't use this in the show, but he made some good points about how he saw himself as British - despite seeming like the epitome of the Englishman he also has Scottish heritage. His book, if you're interested, is available here.

Jeremy

Well you learn something every day! I had no idea at all London Midland ran a service through Manchester! I have always just used Virgin as they run every 20 mins down that line.

Miriam - I always got directly to the Virgin Trains website as National Rail never shows the best fares, and The Trainline adds on extra fees (ok, maybe only a couple of quid but it's money better in your pocket!)

In terms of what to do in Manchester, you could either venture away from the station to the shopping area near Piccadilly Gardens, have a look around there, then pick up the tram from that point (it is one stop away from the station). Or if you prefer to get to Salford first, nearby is the Lowry shopping centre (small outlet opposite the theatre), the Imperial War museum of the North, and of course, my beloved Manchester United (that might be more of a specialist place of interest though, not for everyone!)

Do check out http://www.thelowry.com/ too - where the theatre is. There are also galleries and exhibitions on throughout the year so something may take your fancy.

Here's the link for the War Museum: http://north.iwm.org.uk/
That is across the river from the theatre and the footbridge is very close by so just a few minute walk.

Anyway these are probably your best options without straying too far from your route (Piccadilly to Harbour City). But let me know if there's anything specific that you are interested in and I'll get you relevant travel options and directions etc...

Regards,

Catherine

Just to correct myself, I've checked their website and London Midland run trains through Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe but not direct to Manchester. There are easy and frequent connections from both of those stations to and from Manchester.

Sorry for getting even more off-topic!

Thank you to all who have given advice on trains etc. Bonus points to all :)
I have booked my E Ticket via Virgin. I will have about 3 hrs and I am sure I can something to do-will check out the suggestions made.

I still can't believe my luck with this whole thing. If everything turns out as planned I will be seeing my fav Paul Merton performing 3 times ( 2 at the comedy store). This is becoming less a 'tourist' trip as a British comedy performance and shopping trip LOL. I plan on buying Nicholas'book to read on the train.
