It's comes under the heading of 'typical British humour', no more, no less.
If you listen very carefully you will hear the (mainly British) audience laughing.

In particular 'irony' a humerous concept that is not understood on the other side of the pond.

I think it can be classed as 'situational irony' defined as 'the contrast between what happens and what was expected'.

Subject: [just-a-minute] leaping forward... into 4th place

I find this to be a source of profound annoyance. The way Nicholas builds up this moment after a series of incorrect challenges garner a panelist a lot of points, or when someone has contributed greatly on a subject and is found to be speaking when the whistle goes, he does this big song and dance of how well someone has done. Heaping upon them praise upon praise and other accolades... And ruins the whole thing by saying that the panelist in question has leaped forward into 4th or 3rd place or is still in 4th or 3rd place. This has been a source of some great comedic moments, largely from some of the new breed of panelists who use every chance to take the mickey out of this overused and rather patronizing phrase.
but im curious about how others feel about this. Whats the overall opinion from the fans?
