Subject: Re: [just-a-minute] Re: leaping forward... into 4th placeHi Guys,
Yes, sure Nicholas isn't a good Chairman. But do we want a good Chairman? They never say he's the only Chairman we ever had, because he's not. A few others did the job for a change. I recall Kenneth was hopelessly confused and totally unfunny and indeed a bad chairman. Clement was authoritarian and humourless and if I recall correctly wrong on occasion. Sure Nicholas has had many cringeworthy moments. And sometimes these end up being excellent comedy. Like the fabled herbaceous border incident, where Paul challenged Clement when Clem stupidly said his herbaceous border could outwit an opponent. And Nic opposed the challenge stating that it was quite possible for a herbaceous border to outwit another. I laughed and laughed at that.
And would JAM be the same without the merciless taunts from Paul and Sue about his past as a drag queen on the docks, or in the slums of the east end or whatever.....I love those moments. I think the fans do to and that's why, as a special treat, they stick in a subject containing the word Chairman every so often.
I wonder if Dean has compiled statistics on wrong challenges incorrectly awarded, or correct challenges turned down (only those unintentional errors would count). I am sure if we regard Nic as bad for awarding points and the subject for a wrong challenge then we could equally become annoyed with Clem say, for making all those wrong challenges (e.g. challenging for words when they are, in fact, slightly different).
Anyway, the last message I sent disappeared. I will have to copy before I press send to ensure I have it should my Yahoo session time out.

I know it was rhetorical (question), I just gave a rhetorical answer. :)

Well, regarding the chairman, I have already stated my thoughts and feelings about why I feel Nicholas doesn't make a good chairman on this program innumerable times. The problem I think stems from the fact that as I go back over the years, I continue to find all kinds of little things that fan the flames, if you like, of my overall opinion on Nicholas' unsuitability to be chairman. Sure, he's been chairman of Just a Minute for the last four and a half decades, but look at Fidel Castro. He installed himself as president for life of Cuba, and you can't really say he's doing the people of that island nation any good is he? Which just goes to show that being in a certain job for a long time doesn't necessarily make you any good at it. The main issue regarding Nicholas has to be that he isn't just content to let the moments of contribution or humor just be, he has to ruin the enjoyment of one and all by sticking his big fat stinking conk into everything with some inane comment that he likes to believe is a demonstration of his sharp wit, when it actuality his commentary comes out all flat and unenjoyable, like a bottle of ginger beer you leave at room temperature without the top on. If you were to read his ferago of a book 'The Straight Man: My Life in Comedy', you can instantly tell that it is a work of utter fiction, or as Nicholas would put it, a 'flight of pure fantasy'. It would have to be, because the anecdotes held within this tome seem to stem from the ramblings of a lunatic. And another thing... *WHISTLE*How'd I do? :) I must be in the lead now! I must be in the lead now!

Oz/Don - we will give you both a bonus point because we enjoyed both of your challenges.Next round is with you Robert and you must speak without repetition on why Nicholas doesn't make a good chairman of JAM, starting now

Perhaps you have an irony deficiency.

The way Nicholas builds up this moment after a series of incorrect challenges garner a panelist a lot of points, or when someone has contributed greatly on a subject and is found to be speaking when the whistle goes, he does this big song and dance of how well someone has done. Heaping upon them praise upon praise and other accolades... And ruins the whole thing by saying that the panelist in question has leaped forward into 4th or 3rd place or is still in 4th or 3rd place. This has been a source of some great comedic moments, largely from some of the new breed of panelists who use every chance to take the mickey out of this overused and rather patronizing phrase.
