Hello Miriam,

I'm so pleased for you. :-) That's almost restored my faith that the BBC can do the right thing, even for a non-licence fee payer.

I'll be applying for tickets for the Lowry as well once the applications open tomorrow.

A piece of advice - start looking into the journey options from London to Manchester as soon as you can. The train is (much) cheaper if you buy in advance and the sooner you buy, the cheaper it is. From the conversation of a few weeks ago, I know there will be people who will help you navigate the sometime byzantine UK railway system and the multitude of options available to you. If you get stuck, just ask. I'm happy to help, but I must caution that I'm not an expert.

Cheers

Hello Miriam,

First of all, I'm keeping this on the group mailing list rather than having a private email discussion so that others can chip in and correct me or offer better suggestions.

Generally speaking you can get the best train fares going direct to the train company as they can offer special fares. In this case the major train operator is Virgin at http://www.virgintrains.co.uk The decent thing here is that they offer a service where you can buy a ticket and print it out at home. That can be cheaper and would mean you can print your tickets before you leave home and save having to collect them in London. Look at the bottom of their website for e-tickets.

There is another company running trains from London to Manchester - London Midland at http://www.londonmidland.com They don't run many trains (I think three a day each way as compared to two per hour for Virgin) and they're slower but they're cheaper.

Whatever you do, check the ticket conditions. Most cheap tickets are for the booked train only. Look for tickets containing the word Advance for this sort of ticket. If you miss your train, you have to buy another (more expensive) ticket so you need to be sure you can make the train before booking it. Off-peak don't pin you to a train but have restrictions on when you can travel. Open tickets get you on any train but are expensive. Standard class is fine for most people but if you fancy pampering and a "free" meal then First Class is an option.

The rail journey you need is London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly. Once in Manchester, you can get the tram from underneath Piccadilly station to Harbour City and then it's a half-mile walk to the Lowry.

This sort of thing can be confusing and intimidating for those of us who are used to the system so please don't be afraid to ask.

I was a Mancunian (someone from Manchester) around 25 years ago so hopefully a more recent citizen can advise on the best place to go.

I suspect this might be the start of a rather long topic but I - and I'm sure many others - will be delighted to help. If nothing else to get you away from London for the day and see some more of the country!

Cheers

Hi Mirian

Make sure you book your train as soon as possible; you'll get the best price.  I find www.thetrainline.com the best site for prices, but KJ might be right (so try his recommendations too).   If everything is too expensive, you can always travel by bus from Victoria to Manchester.

I hope you have a good time.

Julian

Well you learn something every day! I had no idea at all London Midland ran a service through Manchester! I have always just used Virgin as they run every 20 mins down that line.

Miriam - I always got directly to the Virgin Trains website as National Rail never shows the best fares, and The Trainline adds on extra fees (ok, maybe only a couple of quid but it's money better in your pocket!)

In terms of what to do in Manchester, you could either venture away from the station to the shopping area near Piccadilly Gardens, have a look around there, then pick up the tram from that point (it is one stop away from the station). Or if you prefer to get to Salford first, nearby is the Lowry shopping centre (small outlet opposite the theatre), the Imperial War museum of the North, and of course, my beloved Manchester United (that might be more of a specialist place of interest though, not for everyone!)

Do check out http://www.thelowry.com/ too - where the theatre is. There are also galleries and exhibitions on throughout the year so something may take your fancy.

Here's the link for the War Museum: http://north.iwm.org.uk/
That is across the river from the theatre and the footbridge is very close by so just a few minute walk.

Anyway these are probably your best options without straying too far from your route (Piccadilly to Harbour City). But let me know if there's anything specific that you are interested in and I'll get you relevant travel options and directions etc...

Regards,

Catherine

Just to correct myself, I've checked their website and London Midland run trains through Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe but not direct to Manchester. There are easy and frequent connections from both of those stations to and from Manchester.

Sorry for getting even more off-topic!
