I thought the shows this week and last week have been very good – JAM at its best really. Kevin Eldon was as good as people here suggested he would be.

the recording tonight is said to have included Paul, Sheila Hancock, Jenny Eclair and Ian McMillan. An interesting team – I think it’s good to have Ian McMillan back as he was very good in his two previous shows.

This means Jenny will have done seven shows this year. I think she is the best current woman panellist and it’s good to see her doing lots of shows.

Jenny probably is the best overall match for JAM's pacing and humor... and she's a nice foil for Nicholas.

But, surely Sue Perkins rates highly on the list. Most regulars have their tricks of the trade (Paul's humorous bonus points; Clement's last-second challenges; Gyles' pedantic challenges). Very few players in the show's history have been able to /simply keep talking/ as Sue can. Really, only Stephen Fry comes to mind.

Hi all,

I think Sue Perkins's is very much a matter of opinion. Some like her and her style; others seem, to be charitable, less keen.

Personally I don't mind Sue Perkins. She is certainly one of the more able talkers but I think a lot of the humour of JaM lies in the challenges. There is a fine line to be drawn between people who are too easy to challenge and people who are too hard to challenge. I think Sue usually ends up in the latter category. So, for me, her ability to "just talk" is also her greatest failing in JaM.

Indeed one of the reasons I loved Peter Jones in JaM was precisely because he wasn't actually very good at the game.

Jenny is a better JaM contestant for me precisely because she isn't as good at the game as Sue whilst still being competent. She makes for a better show.

It's all a matter of opinion, of course.

Cheers

I think you have hit the metaphorical nail on the head fairly and squarely there kJ
Winning or losing is irrelevant, the name of the game is ENTERTAINMENT.
As I've said before JAM is largely a vehicle for comedians to 'ply their trade'
all IMHO** of course...

(** In My Humble Opinion)

I think Sue is great and very skilful at the game both in keeping going and in challenging. But I do find Jenny a little funnier...

Hm... Well. I agree with your larger point that entertainment is the bottom line...

But, poor play isn't intrinsically entertaining. Shappi Khorsandi doesn't score many points, but there's a large difference between what Shappi and Peter bring to a panel. Peter's real gift was his warmth -- I think it's fair to say he was the show's heart for many years. His gaffes, his "well"s, his inevitable hesitations, all made for nice recurring themes, but Peter's warmth would have been his touchstone even if he'd been a little better at the game. :)

Also, "comedy vs. competition" is happily not a problem now the way it was sometimes in the early days of the show. Thanks to the larger rotating cast of panelists, and the good lineup decision-making by someone at the BBC, there is plenty of room for both. (One of the (many) reasons that Paul is so good at the show is that he's learned to tailor his gameplay based on the lineup.) Still... when Sue and Paul get in a race during the last few rounds, though, the other panelists hesitate at their peril. I wonder what an episode with Paul, Sue, Gyles, and Stephen Fry would be like.

Hi all,
well I'm glad this has been raised again. I personally think Sue Perkins has to be one of the most skillful players of all time. Her vocabulary is incredible and her flow, word for word, i'd say couldn't even be matched by that of Clement. Clement's lagubrious style was to his advantage and it allowed him to speak at a much slower pace than most and keep going. I personally do think that Sue is entertaining when she speaks. She is whitty and even when she isn't I marvel at her dexterity. I'm very glad there is someone who can keep going because with Clement gone it is only really Stephen Fry and Paul who can properly get under way without each round dissolving into a string of challenges. Of course the key to the game is entertainment but even in the old days when someone like Derek would go for a minute and his dissertation be informative or interesting rather than sidesplitting I still enjoyed it greatly.
