Topic: Wendy Richard (was: Nicholas's book)

Having just spent 5 minutes praising Bernard Cribbins (who I don't think
ever succumbed to appearing on Just A Minute), I must rush to Mark's defence
and point out that I, too, did not enjoy Wendy Richard's rather grumpy
appearances on the show. I've actually complained about her on this list in
the past. However, I'd like to add a word in her defence.

I actually met her, in connection with her guest star role in "Dad's Army"
(where she played Private Walker's girlfriend), as she attended some
commemorative events in the 1990s. I found her very nice, in person. Not
only was she rather sweet, but also devastatingly attractive in a tight
sweater - as anyone who saw her as Miss Brahms in 'Are You Being Served'
will testify.

Why she reacted so badly to the competitive atmosphere on 'Just A Minute' I
have no idea.

Perhaps she felt intimidated by all the other panellists being men, or by
the sheer intellectual weight of the likes of Clement, Derek and Kenneth.
And hence she became rather aggressive. But in truth, she wasn't really like
that. I'd characterise her as gentle, and scatty: rather like Aimi Macdonald
(in every sense), and perhaps inclined to over-compensate for that.

G'day Dean

I liked your review, and was quietly glad that Wendy got the boot. She
really was a sourpuss.

BTW, you might want to fix a couple of literals: "friernds" and "aan actor"

Regards
Mark

Bernard Cribbins
JAM Appearances: Two as a panellist on radio in 1978.
How he did: Amusingly, Bernard made a turn out of offering around mints at every opportunity, perhaps as a way of covering up for not being quick on the buzzer. But certainly capable of the amusing remark.
Who is he: Bernard is one of the UK's favourite comedy performers, perhaps being best known these days for his work on children's TV, such as The Wombles. But he has a long list of comedy films too, most notably in the Carry On movies.
