Hello Miriam,

It's worth checking the iPlayer route. The video stuff is restricted but I'm sure that the radio content can be had outside of the UK. The reason I say that is that my company's internet connection is in France so whenever I'm at work, that's where sites think I am. And the radio stuff on iPlayer works for me - I've just been listening to last night's "Clue".

Personally I used IPDL for doing downloads. It pretends to be an iPhone so can download the BBC's MP3s directly. Very nice. I also use uknova and thebox.bz, although uknova accounts can be tricky to get hold of as they operate a one-out, one-in policy.

Cheers

I'm in Oz at the moment and I used Radio Downloader to get a copy of The Wire last week.

Kj is right, I can't watch any BBC programmes on the IPlayer, but I can listen to the radio programmes and download them.

Does IPDL still work ?
I thought it had gone the same way as 'get-iPlayer' in that the BBC had changed the iPlayer so that software imitating iPhones no longer worked.

The author's website indicates that it does not work any more...
http://po-ru.com/projects/iplayer-downloader/

get-iPlayer was my downloader of choice until Auntie Beeb stepped in and the author gave up, sigh!

First post - please be gentle with me!

Couple of things... firstly another vote for the truly excellent Radio Downloader, which is brilliant and such a simple, clever piece of software. Only problem is how do I find time to listen to the nearly 1000 programmes it has kindly downloaded for me? :>)

Secondly, I too think IPDL isn't working now, very sadly. But have a look at http://david.woodhou.se/get_iplayer_setup_4.0.exe which if you are a Windows user seems to work as a way of setting up Get Iplayer - well it did for me the other day, but use at your own risk, naturally.

Lastly, iSound as recommended further down the message list, wants you to pay for it after installation, unless I've misunderstood something? I'm a tight git, I'm afraid....

rgds to all
Rob

I use Audacity a lot in my teaching. However, if you want to try some quick and dirty "top and tailing" of mp3s you may want to have a look at MPEG Audio Scissors. It is not quite as accurate as Audacity but it is very quick.

Also is you are trying to convert and edit some shows in wma format you may want to have a look at Format factory. When you add the file to the convert list you can use the Set Range function to convert just the section that you want. This is handy if you are working on some BBC7 downloads where they often give you quite a few minutes before and after the show as part of the download.

I hope this may be of use.

Love as always, David

Dear Miriam, I live in South Korea and this is what I do.

1 - I get the URL for the radio show I need. You can use a site like this one to find the URL:

http://beebotron.org/index3lite.php?reload

The Monday evening comedy URL is usually:

mms://wm.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio4fmcoyopa/radio_4_fm_-_monday_1830.wma

Actually you can usually use the same URL for different Radio 4 shows - just change the date and time. Here is an example of a few other BBC radio URLS:

mms://wm.bbc.co.uk/wms/bbc7coyopa/bbc7_-_monday_1800.wma
mms://wm.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio3coyopa/radio_3_-_monday_2315.wma
mms://wm.bbc.co.uk/wms/6musiccoyopa/6music_-_monday_0400.wma

2 - Find a downloader, post the URL (given above) and download the stream. The mms protocol is a little tricky. I have used:

VLC Player
HiDownload Platinum
Portable FlashGet v.1.9.4
SDP downloader

Before you try any of the above read the reviews - and then think about if you believe what some of the reviews say and how much you want the shows. The reason I say that is some people say "That software has spyware" "It is shareware but here is a free portable version" "it only downloads one stream at a time" etc.

What you will get is a wma file which you can then play or edit into another format using software like Format Factory (which is what I use).

If anybody else has any bright ideas for me please let me know. I am actually one of the few people who miss the old real audio files as they downloaded very quickly and I could edit them very easily. But so it goes.

I hope some of this may help.

Love as always, David

I can hereby confirm that the VLC player do not contain any spyware, is free and has no hidden surprises.
The other software on the list I know nothing about, but VLC is rock solid stuff. Also it's cross platform. However it must be said that it is slightly complicated to use.

VLC Player
HiDownload Platinum
Portable FlashGet v.1.9.4
SDP downloader
