I use Audacity a lot in my teaching. However, if you want to try some quick and dirty "top and tailing" of mp3s you may want to have a look at MPEG Audio Scissors. It is not quite as accurate as Audacity but it is very quick.

Also is you are trying to convert and edit some shows in wma format you may want to have a look at Format factory. When you add the file to the convert list you can use the Set Range function to convert just the section that you want. This is handy if you are working on some BBC7 downloads where they often give you quite a few minutes before and after the show as part of the download.
