I can hereby confirm that the VLC player do not contain any spyware, is free and has no hidden surprises.
The other software on the list I know nothing about, but VLC is rock solid stuff. Also it's cross platform. However it must be said that it is slightly complicated to use.

Before you try any of the above read the reviews - and then think about if you believe what some of the reviews say and how much you want the shows. The reason I say that is some people say "That software has spyware" "It is shareware but here is a free portable version" "it only downloads one stream at a time" etc.
