I am sorry if this has been answered before but can anybody tell us what a live recording of Just a Minute (or ISIHAC) is like.
I left England over 20 years ago so the chances of me going to an actual recording would seem pretty slim.

Hello David,
I can't say about JaM but I have been to three Clue (ISIHAC) recordings.
Clue recordings are normally in theatres so the performers are up on stage. The stage layout is a table in the centre front of the stage where the chairman sits (Humph, when I saw them) with the scorer (the delightful Samantha). On either side are two more tables at a slight angle - so the whole thing forms an open "U" shape. The panellists sit here. Each table has a light blue tablecloth over it with "Radio 4" emblazoned plus the microphones, water bottles, etc.
The producer comes on (Jon Naithsmith) and does a very brief warm-up and a sound check for the "man in the van" as well as doing housekeeping announcements - how long the interval is, where the fire exits are, the importance of laughing even if it's not funny, etc. He then introduces Colin Sell, whose piano is behind the tables at the back of the stage, and the panellists who come on one at a time. Finally he introduces Humph.
And then the show kicks off. Two are recorded in each evening with an interval between. They tend to run for around 45 minutes to allow for editing down to 28 minutes for radio. In Clue's case there tends to be an extra round recorded that usually doesn't get broadcast (unless it makes it to a Christmas special).
Once the show's finished, the producer comes on and gets people to re-do any scripted parts that they'd fluffed. Almost always that was Humph.
And that's it.
There is a bootleg MP3 of a Clue recording made by an audience member kicking around which gives an idea of what gets dropped in the edit. If it's not in the group library and anyone's interested then I'll see if I can find it on one of my old hard disks.
Cheers

I'm sure there are photos available showing what you would see on stage, but as you might imagine, the set is very simple. Nic and scorer sit at a desk in the middle of the stage. On each side of them is a desk at which two panellists sit, and each of the three desks is covered with a coloured cloth. There are bottles of water available on the desks as well as pens/paper (I think), and the scorer has a stopwatch and a whistle.
Nic and contestants come on to rapturous applause, whistling and whooping. Nic introduces the panel, and explains that there will be two recordings and then instructs the audience to do their thing after they hear the familiar introduction heard at the start of the show. The programme then progresses much as you hear on the radio, except there may be some retakes at the end if Nic has fluffed some lines.
The only one I have been to is the one at Oxford broadcast in 2005, which for me was memorable for two reasons. The first was that they had trouble with the sound system, which led to a delay, resulting in Nic asking the audience if they wanted to dispense with the interval, which unbelievably, they did! I ask you, what are the chances of attending a recording of JAM where the rest of the audience are teetotallers?????
The second irritation was the presence of a young boy (ca 11, I guess) behind me, who had a loud and not-to-be-surprised-at high-pitched laugh.
Still, it was good to see it live and I would certainly go again, but I'll take my own beer this time!

I was fortuate enough to be in the uk last october and attend the Salford recordings from the last series.
I posted a couple of grainy pictures here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/just-a-minute/photos/album/194501012/pic/900232606/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc
Simple set up of 3 sets of table and chairs- panelist on the sides and nicholas/timekeep in center with equipment.
They introduced Nicholas first who was given a Lifetime achievement award with standing ovation. Nicholas then encouraged the audience to Please laugh ( like we needed a prompt LOL) and then he introduced the panelists. Once they sat down they had to test the mikes and buzzers-problems with both but they soon got it fixed. the first show starts and with only a few minutes break the second recording.
I was first row center in the balcony so I had a great view of the stage and was in near rapture the entire time :) They all play to the audience although Paul Merton maybe a bit more- he also scribbles on his notepad all through it and yet listens intently.
The only thing that I noticed was cut from the broadcast was in one of the shows Nicholas makes a mistake and the scorekeeper had to help him while somewhat amusing at the time I am glad they cut it.
Sadly Nicholas and the whole panel had to leave right after the show to catch trains so no chance to get Nicholas to sign his new book which I bought in nearby Manchester.
Thanks again all here that helped me with Information on how get to Manchester/Salford from London. And for Dean who encourage me to "Go for it" in getting the tickets in a rather Unorthordox manner.

You can have further idea of what Clue recordings are like by buying the "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue Live", which contains four shows, or if you prefer, two recording nights. I don't think the same thing for "Just a Minute" is currently available.
