Here's a fun game - choose three random editions of JAM featuring Gyles Brandreth and score a point each time he mentions Schmidt getting shot. Once you have reached ten points you can reward yourself with an eclair.

How about also every time he mentions going on as Hamlet and coming off as omelette, his first wife, or his circumlocutious way of saying "a nod's as good as a wink to a blind horse"?

And the porn trip he went on with Lord Longford - "my wife has sewn up the pockets"

Having said all that, there's no denying that GB is a clever and entertaining man, and one of my favourite JAM regulars. His diary is a cracking read, too.

By the way, is it me, or is Sue Perkins getting better and better? She'll never be Linda Smith, but she really has settled well into the format. All we need is for them to persuade Sandi Toksvig to record some shows and I'll be truly happy.

Could I amend that first sentence to say "...there's little doubt that GB is a..."?

I'm prepared to accept that he's a clever man, but to say that there's no doubt that he's entertaining is pushing it a little too far. I mean no malice to him and I'm sure that lots of people share lapsedcat's view, but he is most certainly not one of my favourite JAM regulars.

I think Sue Perkins' appearance on show 2 was one of her best. I'm still not entirely convinced by her on JaM, not least because I suspect she's a little too good at the game and sometimes a good orator can dominate and it doesn't make for an entertaining show. However the banter about the emergency stop and the kitten was very good indeed.

Cheers

There are many other favourite Brandreth riffs like how people got up to vote him out, and the Libs waiting tables, and the hairstyles of Tory leaders, and Hughie Green and opportunity knocking... Mind you he’s probably only done these three or four times each in more than 50 appearances.

We could get similar lists for some others such as Kenneth Williams and Clement Freud. Even Paul Merton seems to have some pet phrases and ideas he returns to.

Here’s an interesting article comparing Paul’s comic mind to Bob Monkhouse. Replace Bob’s name with Gyles in your mind...

Or how long did it take Gyles to find a dog to be carried on an escalator?

Notice in the old days he sounded so much like Derek Nimmo?

One of my favourites.

His best is when he picks up Paul's fantastic threads and takes them further. You can hear Paul warming to him then. Paul knows he's good.

Dave

I have been apart of a British Telly fan group in my area for about 25 yrs- we get together at a restaurant and watch videos ( now downloaded- we used to get things on vhs and they were transfered to usa format)

Anyways last night we were watching QI and everyone but Alan Davies
( am i correct on that?) was a JAM panelist-including Gyles B- I was joking to 1 of my friends that I would be playing the "bingo" game - and while Glyes did natter on a bit as usual he didn't do one bingo thing as we have mentioned here. Sue and Glyes tied for 1st place
BTW- the other other panelists were Sue Perkins and Bill Bailey.

In 1998 we had something on UK TV called "If I ruled the world" - notable for Clive Anderson, Graeme Garden and Jeremy Hardy. Tony Hawks, Andy Hamilton and Linda Smith were there too.

Here's a link to the wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Ruled_the_World_game_show.

The basis of the show was to lampoon the behaviour of politicians as a group. It was great to see them in suits acting pompous vying for the audience's votes.

Now if that was available of video I would watch that. It would probably great just as sound. I think it was on BBC.

Our group saw several of If I ruled the World-I quite enjoyed it- but at the time I wasn't listening to JAM so I really only knew Graeme Garden. Panel shows are not on usa tv sadly- although back in 50s/60's we had shows like What's my Line and To Tell the Truth.
( and we have only 2 radio ones currently airing) Miriam
