Topic: J_A_M_fan's recordings

Does anyone know if j_a_m_fan is still a regular around here? Many years ago I downloaded his uploaded JAM shows (mainly from the 1993 series I think) and was pleased to find that unlike the other uploads (welcome as they are), his files were in stereo and a much higher bitrate. Personally I'm not bothered about file sizes - I'd much rather have the best sound quality!

Unfortunately, the only JAM files I backed up were from 1997 onwards (largely, I think, because there were gaps in the archive and this was the point where everything going forward was "complete") and so I lost the files when my hard drive crashed and died about 4 years ago. I've tried to download the files again but sadly the links are no longer active.

If he, or anyone else who has them, is able to upload them again I'd be enormously grateful!

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's highly likely that I've got those versions in my collection,
however it's not granted and I have no way of getting this confirmed
(all files are renamed). Are you still interested in browsing them?
Maybe compare filesize with your current files?
If so I could put the files from 90's and onward available on share.

Well the year pack versions are all mono recordings, 32kbps and a file size of between 6 and 7mb. So basically if you check the file size that will tell you - and if they are stereo recordings that will confirm those are the files I'm after!

If they are the ones you have and you can upload them somewhere I'd be enormously grateful. I'm always on the lookout for good stereo recordings of old JAM shows that haven't been commercially released or that I haven't recorded myself.

As I said initially (as I don't want to look like an ungrateful brat), the mono uploads are GREAT for being able to hear old shows, but it's nice to have stereo recordings for archival purposes and listening to in the car, etc.

I'm araid it aint that easy: I've modified quite a few of the files, in
attempts to improve the sound quality and/or splice incomplete shows
with (lesser quality) complete shows. And while doing so I always
resampled up to 128kpbs, giving a larger file size as result.

Anyways, I've put my entire collection up for grabs here, have a look
and pull down whatever you'd like:

http://stream.beatradar.com/jam/

This url leads to my workstation so the bandwidth may be a bit iffy.
Also notice that it may not always be available - if not just try again
later.
Please notify me when you've grabbed what you want (if any) and it's
alright for me to close the share again.

Thanks a lot for making your archive available - much appreciated!

So far I've managed to grab what I need from 1993, 1994 & 2002 plus the show I accidentally recorded over from 2004. As you point out, your connection is hit & miss at times. Not a complaint, just saying it may take a while until I've grabbed the bits I'm after that look as though they may be from a better quality source that what's available for download on this group.

I will let you know when I'm done and many, many thanks for doing this!

Thanks for keeping me posted. As long as I know it has a purpose I'll
keep it open, that's no problem.

Good!

Yeah sorry about that, I admit it was lazy of me to just open a share.
It's just so darn easy and convenient.
In addition to being a workstation turned off and on at random
intervals, when I fire up a torrent client I'm afraid I consume what
little there is of spare bandwidth. So embrace yourself, this will be a
sloow ride ;)

Regarding the better quality sources, thats quite interesting. Before I
found the Mekka'o'Dean I hunted for JAM episodes on various torrent
sites, and found one rather large collection. It was in a terrible state
though, mostly missing tags or even with filenames that made no sense
for any carbon based lifeform whatsoever.
But the sources were different than those found here, yes. And that's
when it became interesting. Because that other collection had a large
share of incomplete recordings, recordings that are found complete in
this group. However, the pieces that were there was quite often of
noticeably better audio quality.

So, I'v done the obvious: Spliced them. Used the lesser sounding version
to fill the gaps. They are easily recognisable, typically they start off
sounding bad but then at a given point fades into better sound.

Other low quality files that happened to be in stereo quite a quality
improvement were gained simply by merging the two channels, ie turning
them into mono.

But there are also shows where all I've done is to slightly adjust the
speed cause it was so annoyingly wrong, often way too fast. So don't
expect too much from all the files.

Funny though, how this topic now almost seamlessy merges into the other
thread, about sound restoration. :)
