Topic: Just a minute 259

We now have a copy of the tape transferred to the computer.

The next step is to make it available to the group. This is where I
will need the groups help. I have a MP3 version at 25MB and a WAV
version at 275MB. These have had no post production processing done on
them, just the files edited together to remove the start, joins of the
two tapes, and end. I'm sure that these can be cleaned, although overall
the quality is good considering the age, etc, and everyone has their own
idea of what good sounds like.

Suggestions as to how to make these available to the group please.

Cheers

Mark

I can put them on my nylon.net site for people to download from.  We could have a couple of sources, just to be sure.

I can put them on my servers as well, just mail them as attachments to
me and I'll make them downloadable for all.
Personally I look forward to hear the wav-files and do an audio
restoration attempt - if necessary?

I've received the recording and to those who may wonder, the sound is
good as it is in my opinion. No need to spend a lot of time to tweak it.
The only thing I will do is probably just to even out some flickering in
the left/right channels at a few spots, and some other minor repair on a
few short (< 0.2s) segments.

However, regarding the missing Williams speech in the middle of the
recording: It is possible to *remove* a second or two of his speech and
thus splice two sentences into one and create a sentence that makes
sense, thereby camouflaging the missing part better, but is this wanted,
or do you all want every little piece of what there is available? What
do you think?

His words will go from something like:

"General Munk is the man whose statue should be outside <cut> ...with
their oranges, wasn't there and then there was that Chelsea lad whose
tension <beep>" (challenged) (etc)

... to:
"General Munk is the man and then there was that Chelsea lad whose
tension <beep>" (challenged) (etc)

Hello everyone.

The full passage from my transcript is actually:

KW: General Monk is the man whose statue should be outside the Houses of Parliament; not that filthy regicide Cromwell. He was the one who went across the Channel and said to Charles I, rightful heir, “Come back, we want you,” and thus you have the Restoration. The cheering with Monk, all the way from Dover as they hailed this new age, and what did it mean? Well, there was Nell Gwyn with oranges, wasn’t there, and then there was that Chelsea lot, the pensioners ((BUZZ)) still in it today.

So I for one would not take more out of the surviving recording than my car cassette player ate out of it (after I wrote the transcript), as what ever, it still makes no sense. I would not want use to stop looking for those missing seconds of speech.

Dave

I agree. Plus, I was able to fix some of the distortion around
end/beginning of this cut. Case closed. :)

As I have to travel related to work most of next week and assume there
are many who are eager to hear this "lost episode" I've placed this
amongst the rest of the 70s recordings, here:

http://stream.beatradar.com/jam/

The file is found in the directory "The 1970s" and is named:
JAM - 1978.05.23 - Getting Wound Up.mp3

Right click and select "save link as".

It would be nice if those of you with mediafire accounts could add this
to your collections, as my server here really was intended to be very
temporary and I have not yet fully given up that intention. :D

Regarding the sound: This mp3 contains the nontweaked recording, I've
not altered anything yet. And quite frankly, I think the sound quality
of this recording is so good that it don't need any repairs other than
in very short segments. There's plenty of other jam recordings in our
collection that is in much more need of first aid.

I have started tweaking it but doubt I'll do much more than just lower
the midtones and raise the low and high slightly to shake off some of
the 70s radio "trumpet sound". However my work schedule these days are
killing me so I'll wait with this 'till I can focus and hopefully do a
semi-good job. :)

Enjoy!

At Espen's request for others to upload the file, I have done just that.
I'll pop over to the groups webpage and put my link in for future reference.

Yes, thanks to Mark H, Espen and Paul, and to Dean. Amazingly just 2 1/2 weeks ago I had to take my cassette tape apart as it was all bunched up in the cassette. I then cut it along a taped join in order to put the two halves into two fresh cassette cases. When you listen to the MP3 please think of me struggling with the tape as half came off its spool and was draped from my kitchen through the living room and up the stairs onto my landing in an effort to untangle it, untwist it, and get it back on a spool without getting my fingers all over it.

Dean is formatting my transcript and that should be available soon. You can then read the missing few seconds in context of the full show.

I felt the show was so good as a teenager back in 1978 that I wrote the transcript back then.

Enjoy!

Dave

A guide/history- like the "clue bible" jem roberts did for ISIHAC/ISIRTA (includes a few pictures too).
Have you seen that book Dean? I bought it in London in 2009.
I always wanted more information on I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again epecially as it was my first british radio show (info about Clue was easier to find as it is still running)
But I would be happy with a basic Series/Episode guide to JAM
( I know you have that information at your sites but a book would be a handy referance even in this "kindle"/Tech world.)
I have both of Nicholas' books and Ian Messiter's & the Kenneth Wms Diaries but I still wish for a entire book about just JAM.
Am I just a hopeless British comedy bookworm? Miriam

PS. Today I found still Wrapped(!)double cassete set of Round the Horne and a novel from David Nobbs(of Reginald Perrin fame) in a Used/Charity shop here in Seattle. I must have heard them crying out for a Good Home as I wasn't intending on stopping there. There must be an Anglophile Angel for me. :)
