A welcome to the many new members who have joined in recent weeks.

Please feel free to join in. As a spam protection, your first post goes to me for approval. If it is not spam, I approve it and you, and you can then post as you wish.

I thought it might be worth saying something about what I think is on-topic and off-topic.

The original purpose of the group was as a means of sharing recordings of Just A Minute.  I still see that as the core but we have extended that to other comedy recordings, especially other BBC Radio Four shows, but also other shows involving JAM panellists. Any topic related to any of that is on-topic. Any subject on the technical side of recording, editing, software etc is also on-topic, even though it’s largely Greek to me.

We can also discuss JAM, its players, and other BBC Radio Four comedy shows, and other activities of the panellists.

All I really ask in terms of “rules” is that given the subject here, any discussion should have a sense of fun to it. Try not to get personal about others on the list. We can all have different comedy tastes. The player you hate may be someone else’s favourite. Keep that in mind. We are in the end talking about a shared affection for a silly game show, it’s not something that people should get upset or angry about.

That’s it... have fun... if you are new to the group, feel free to post about your favourite players, why you like the show, whether you prefer the Kenneth Williams era or the Paul Merton era, etc...

Having listened to a heap of early eighties shows, they were noticably carried by Kenneth Williams, especially when there was a guest like Henry Kelly or Liza Goddard (or the annoyingly guffawing Jeremy Beadle), but on balance I think Merton has improved the flow of the programme.

An afterthought: Merton's introduction to the programme soon after Williams' death was inspired and could arguably suggest that Edward Taylor was the greatest JAM producer of all.
