I think the banter between the players is one of the things that makes JAM funny. Paul is very good at it – Jenny and Gyles seem to be his favourite targets these days – but there aren’t many who take Paul on. Julian is one and I think he is good at it. On Paul, the subject was “what makes me laugh” or something like that, so I guess Laurel and Hardy was a legitimate thing for Paul to discuss.

One of the differences between the show of 30 years ago and today was that in the past the panellists did sometimes try to be informative – Kenneth in particular but the others too. Doesn’t happen much these days and given Paul clearly does know something about silent movies I think it’s good to hear him talking about them, myself.

Perhaps Paul is falling back on his silent film knowledge to fill in gaps, just as Clement relied on his lists.

Maybe Julian will be Paul's version of Wendy Richard, who hated Clement's lists?

I am a week behind the current series and finally had a chance to listen to "The First Signs of Summer. I have to say once more that Paul & Julian have been just hilarious sitting next to each other this series. I love it when Julian starts in on Paul and his Silent Comedy Knowledge and Paul zings Julian right back.
