I found this on Gyles' website.
Gyles Brandreth's forebears include ...great-great-grandfather, Benjamin Brandreth, promoted `Brandreth's Pills' (a medicine that cured everything!) and was a pioneer of modern advertising and a New York state senator. Today, Gyles Brandreth has family living in New York, Maryland, South Carolina and California.
And in another Yahoo group, I found a quote from a Mark Twain article.
From Mark Twain:
The piano may do for love-sick girls who lace themselves to skeletons, and lunch on chalk, pickles and slate pencils. But give me the banjo.
When you want genuine music - music that will come right home to you like a bad quarter, suffuse your system like strychnine whisky, go right through you like Brandreth's pills (1), ramify your whole constitution like the measles, and break out on your hide like the pin-feather pimples on a picked goose, - when you want all this, just smash your piano, and invoke the glory-beaming banjo!
- "Enthusiastic Eloquence," San Francisco Dramatic Chronicle, 1865
(1) "a powerful cathartic"
It seems weird that Mark Twain would know of Brandreth's Pills !!

On a different topic, thanks to all who have posted repeats of JAM & Clue episodes.
Finally, copies of Jem Robert's "The Clue Bible" are in UK remainder book stores - I paid £2.50 for a copy.
