Topic: today's panel

if I read twitter correctly the panel at tonight’s recording was Julian Clary, Josie Lawrence, Phill Jupitus and Rick Wakeman. If correct, it will be the first Paul has missed in a while.

Perhaps Paul was there and two of the above – Phill and Rick perhaps – did one show each? Or perhaps Paul or someone else (Tony Hawks?) was ill and pulled out late in the piece?

Anyway interesting to have Phill on again, and also interesting that Rick has been brought back so quickly.

Wow that's news indeed. Could it be what some of us has mentioned earlier, that Paul has appeared less motivated at some shows lately (I'd say the last couple of years, with exceptions of course, but still...)?

If this is him saying "I can't do this many shows" then that's cool, but if it is the producers saying "he can't do that many shows" then that's sad. We all know what Paul has meant for JAM since the 90s!

It’s interesting in this respect – in 44 years, every show except two has featured at least one of the following – Clement Freud, Tony Hawks, Peter Jones, Paul Merton, Derek Nimmo and Kenneth Williams.

The exception was two 2004 shows recorded in Scotland that Paul withdrew from at a late stage (his wife had died a few weeks before).

So – maybe this is a sign that Julian is now in the elite group? He will have done eight shows in eight months... (or as I say a sign that someone pulled out late)

I am an avid fan of "Have I Got News for You" on TV and Paul sems very subdued on that too these days.
He just sits there looking into space a lot of the time, obviously I cannot tell if he does the same on JAM never having been to a recording.
On HIGNYY every now and then he pipes up and it's usually a stroke of genius comment but they are too few and far between for my liking.

Like many of the greats in the world of comedy Paul has suffered from depression in the past, I hope it isn't a symptom of that returning.

I feel that Paul goes thru cycles of involvement in HIGNFY. There were a few series of HIGNFY recently where i got the feeling Paul would have rather have been elsewhere, however in the most recent one he participated far more. He seemed even more lively with Reginald D Hunter so maybe its the choice of panelists as well. The only JAM episode i picked up on Paul being quieter was Episode 6 of Series 60.

It cant be easy doing the same shows over and over without tiredness kicking in. However HIGNFY was poor when Paul took a series off years ago, the same happened to Red Dwarf when Chris Barrie left for a series.

Who knows, maybe it would benefit both Paul and JAM if he wasnt in all the episodes. Give both a bit of a breather. However saying that whenever i see Paul's name missing from the panelists i do feel it won't as good. But im sure the same would have been said about Kenneth Williams and the gang.

The purists will hate me for saying this, but I have found Merton a bit like he's "going through the paces" lately. Brandreth seems to be the one who's landing the huge laughs, even if they're at his expense. For a Tory he's commendably self-deprecating.

I think there's far too little information to assume he may be suffering from depression (something he last had in the late 1980s!).

Paul does a lot of stuff and, these days, it seems only the things he is passionate about (JAM, silent film, travel documentaries & Sunday night at Comedy Store).  He will do JAM to his dying day and will eventually hold the record for most appearances.

I think in the past he has occasionally been dominant in JAM. Kenneth Williams used to play the role of "rescuing" JAM when there hadn't been a laugh for a few minutes. I think Paul Merton has played this role in recent years.  Maybe the quality of other performances (as they have brought in more comedians who are used to entertaining on panel shows) has increased leading to a fall in number if times he has to intervene. Paul clearly loves a team environment; why does he need to say anything if the audience is being entertained?

As the BBC increases the number of JAM shows, it will become increasingly difficult for him to make every show. This particular show does look a bit light however.  I think ideally they would have liked at least one from Paul, Gyles or Sue (their bankers).
