Seeing as we didn't look like getting near the 100 voters total, I thought I'd close the poll, which ran on the blog as well as here.

Votes were as follows:

Paul Merton 22
Ross Noble 15
Gyles Brandreth, Stephen Fry, Tony Hawks 12
Julian Clary 11
Graham Norton 10
Sue Perkins 8
Sheila Hancock 7
Marcus Brigstocke, Kit Hesketh-Harvey 5
Pam Ayres, Charles Collingwood, Jenny Eclair, Josie Lawrence 4
Shappi Khoprsandi 3
Fred MacAulay, Liza Tarbuck 2
Tim Rice 1
Chris Neill 0

The final results are about where the producers would be, I'd suggest. Apart from Ross and Stephen, the top raters are those that appear most frequently - and one imagines the producers would be delighted to have Ross and Stephen on more often.

Women didn't rate very well... Sue Perkins was best at eighth.

I feel a bit sorry for Chris Neill - I suppose I can't honestly say he would have received one of my four votes - but he's always been very funny on the programme, and is tops at banter and repartee. I think I'd have had him in my top 10.

The other interesting point to me is how well Gyles Brandreth did. You get a few people who say they dislike him but he adds something different. I think he deserves the rating he got.

The results aren't surprising, although I agree with Dean that Chris Neill's polling was a lot lower than he deserved (surely Shappi Khorsandi and Tarby's daughter should have been below him on the list?).

Pleased to see Brandreth in the upper echelon.

The question is, were she still alive, where would Linda Smith have been placed? I'd have thought just below Merton.

I'm a Brandreth fan too, didn't like him much at first but now think he's brilliant!

I believe a JAM panel has to have balance. If you have too many comedians on the panel being surreal or outrageous, the whole show doesn't work. I can understand why nobody voted for Chris Neill. He's a poor man's Julian Clary. If Julian is not on the panel, chris can make a few controversial comments that entertain you. However, given a choice, people choose Clary.

I don't really understand the two votes for Lisa Tarbuck!  I like having non-comedians, but they do have to be quirky or have some interesting stories.

Nooo Shappi is just *so* cute! She's nowhere near a good player (yet?) of the game, but she's the most charming female player JAM has ever had as a panellist. She has a kind of personality I've missed in all the other female participants so far in the history of JAM.

What's disappointing though, is that this vote didn't get more votes! What's up with that?
I thing such votes are a lot of fun Dean - please continue with those!

I totally agree about Shappi, she is getting better all the time. If you
haven't had a chance to listen to her R4 show Shappi Talks, I would highly
reccomend it. If you don't have it, just say so and I can upload it for you
to grab.

Well, maybe I'm wrong, but I find her a bit wearying on JAM. And Nicholas doesn't help matters, what with his tendency to drool all over her and declare her a "delightful creature" like a be-blazered superannuated old rake of the first water.

Rake also means "An immoral or dissolute person; a libertine" and water could refer to the seas, ie tread the waters. Therefore "a be-blazered superannuated old rake of the first water" could mean an old immoral sailor.
Im sure Clement would have tried that defence amongst others.

Who wants to be Chairman?

I havent heard Shappi on JAM but ive yet to be impressed with her on other shows.
Nicolas seems to grandiose everyone going by his less than serious openers where he declares the greatness of the panelists.

Im a big Andy Hamilton fan. Hopefully Old Harrys Game will be back soon.
I know he's not highly rated but Richard Madeley has some good anacdotes and a wide vocabulary so would be interesting to see how he handled the occasion. I'd also like to see Terry Wogan given more of an opportunity after his two shows from series 59. Rick Wakeman has already been invited back and he was from the same run of shows.

Someone on the blog has grumbled that the voting was very conservative which it was. I didn’t vote, but had I done so, I would have voted for Paul, Ross, Graham and Stephen Fry. Now in 2006 on the blog

http://justaminutesite.blogspot.com/2006/01/top-20.html  and again in 2009 http://justaminutesite.blogspot.com/2009/08/top-20-of-jam-history.html  I ranked my all-time favourite players and on both occasions, of those still alive, those four were my favourites.

I would very much like to have included Julian and Jenny in particular – Julian just gets better every time he plays and Jenny’s unique style always makes me laugh hard. But I couldn’t find one of my top four to drop out.

So I’d be ecstatic if I turned up for a recording and found Paul Merton, Ross Noble, Stephen Fry and Graham Norton on the stage.

But I’d be almost as ecstatic to see Gyles Brandreth, Marcus Brigstocke, Jenny Eclair and Julian Clary up there with Nicholas.

And I’d be more than delighted to walk in to Tony Hawks, Sheila Hancock, Sue Perkins and Kit Hesketh-Harvey.

It would be a great evening in the company of Tim Rice, Pam Ayres, Josie Lawrence and Chris Neill too.

And I’m sure I’d get some laughs from Charles Collingwood, Liza Tarbuck, Shappi Khorsandi and Fred MacAulay. But I would probably be a little disappointed at first!

That’s the thing – the standards really are very high.

Perhaps a better way to have done the poll would be in a Big Brother/American Idol style and let everyone pick as many as they liked and have the bottom ranked fall off each time until we got a winner. It might get a bit tedious to be voting continuously though.

Or we could take away four players – or add another 12 – and put them in a series of one-on-one showdown polls till we ended up with a winner.

Anyway I’m glad you seem to have found it a bit of fun.

I voted for Josie Lawrence- once she got over her first timer nerves she has done well-she is an old pro at Improv and has won a few shows now so she was my favorite out of the females- with Shelia Hancock a very close runner up.
Paul was a shoo in for me and I love the naughtyness of Julian
- the 4th spot was the hard one-it was a toss up between Stephan Fry/ Ross Noble/ and Graham Norton- I finally gave the edge to Graham but just barely.
