I really liked Terry and Julian - I seem to recall it was Lee Simpson as Terry, and he played the perpetually harrassed/frustrated/embarrassed flatmate of the outrageously camp Julian Clary. Well worth a watch, although I guess it probably hasn't aged well.

Kenneth Williams. Listening to him cracks me up every time. I really do like it when Kenneth goes off on one during the shows. Clement changed his style as the show went on however was very consistant throughout his tenure.
My dream 4 would feature Kenneth Williams, Paul Merton and Kenneth Williams as the first 3, not sure about the other.

If Kenneth was still i JAM, I can say for certain I would not have listened to JAM today.
And if what Clement say in the jam documentary is true, JAM gained significantly more listeners after Williams died so at least I'm not the only one with that opinion - although I might be in the minority on this list. :)
Too bad only two women are in this poll. We could list all three with Kenneth. It would serve him right.

I believe he's mostly viewed positively around here, but to me it's simply his way of speaking; I can't stand it. It's so incredibly annoying. Way too theatrical, it would be a relief to hear him speak like a normal human being just once.

He's probably only viewed negatively by some. Others will love him. The same is true for modern-day players. Personally Gyles Brandreth gets right up my goat but I know that others think he's great. I quite like Liza Tarbuck in JaM; I know others don't agree with me.
I have to say that I'm not a KW fan though. I'm not a fan of the older series either. I haven't decided whether those two are related; I suspect not because I'm not a fan of old Clues either.
I see JaM as working best when it's full of team players. I know it's an individual game but I like everyone to be involved and given a go and I love it when players bounce off each other. Some of my favourite players do just that; Paul Merton, Tony Hawks, Ross Noble, et al.
Kenneth seemed either to like to dominate proceedings or he retreated into a sulk, neither of which are characteristics which make for a good performance.
All, of course, IMHO. Other opinions are available.

But at least he had variety in his personas. Unlike many one-dimensional "characters" in the media, he could change from fey to pompous to brutally aggressive to seductive to erudite to Cockney to Oxford and back to fey within 60 seconds.
Speaking of one-dimensional characters, I sometimes wonder why Julian Clary has stood the test of time with his single-entendre character, but I can only put it down to an indefinable bucketload of charisma and a great intelligence - and he always seems to be winking at you with a wry smile as if to say, "Yes, we both know it's silly, but just go along with it" and you do, because you're in on the joke.

It's hard judging comedy from 40 years ago. It's so heavily based on current culture, trends and attitudes. How many people think Shakespeare's comedies are worth rolling around on the floor for? Listen to "Much Binding in the Marsh" and ask yourself how funny it is now. (But I must admit I quite like it even though I don't understand most of it. Strange, that.)
We change, the recorded comedy doesn't.
Remember when Ben Elton was the hottest thing in funny stuff? I remember thinking Alexei Sayle was the funniest man on TV. Today I can watch their repeats and start remembering the great days I had watching paint dry.
It's a very rare thing for a comedy to transcend decades and still generate a genuine LOL: the Goons can still make me weep; an unexpected moment in Round the Horn can make me snort milk from my nose (especially impressive because I don't drink milk. Must see the doctor about that); I can alarm passersby as I grin while walking down the street with my MP3 player producing great Humph lines from ISIHAC.
The shelf life of comedy is not nearly as long as you might think. If you don't believe me, try watching any Norman Wisdom movie. (IMHO, of course).
So please be gentle judging old funnymen. If they can even make you smile 50 years later, they must have been doing something brilliant back then.

I agree about Kenneth Williams- sometimes I can really enjoy him and other times I don't. ( and sometimes the sound level on him can be too low and one can barely hear him)
I like Peter Jones's way of reminding us all that it Is just a Game afterall. I rather liked his slightly grumpy old man ways near the end of his life.
I do miss Linda Smith-she certainly was One of a Kind.
Derek and his travels-no one can replace his style.

It's hard judging comedy from 40 years ago. It's so heavily based on
current culture, trends and attitudes. How many people think Shakespeare's
comedies are worth rolling around on the floor for? Listen to "Much
Binding in the Marsh" and ask yourself how funny it is now. (But I must
admit I quite like it even though I don't understand most of it. Strange,
that.)
We change, the recorded comedy doesn't.
Remember
when Ben Elton was the hottest thing in funny stuff? I remember thinking
Alexei Sayle was the funniest man on TV. Today I can watch their repeats
and start remembering the great days I had watching paint dry.
It's a
very rare thing for a comedy to transcend decades and still generate a genuine
LOL: the Goons can still make me weep; an unexpected moment in Round the Horn
can make me snort milk from my nose (especially impressive because I don't drink
milk. Must see the doctor about that); I can alarm passersby as I grin while
walking down the street with my MP3 player producing great Humph lines from
ISIHAC.
The shelf life of comedy is not nearly as long as you
might think. If you don't believe me, try watching any Norman Wisdom
movie. (IMHO, of course).
So please be gentle judging old
funnymen. If they can even make you smile 50 years later, they must have
been doing something brilliant back then.

Yes, that what I was clumsily trying to get to. The fact the JAM can still be entertaining decades after broadcast is a testament to the skills of the panelists and the strategy of the game.
ISIHAC needs dozens of game formats to keep it fresh while JAM's single format has never changed.

There was one show I was listening to yesterday where he was speaking and Kenneth was then challenged and there was a bit of argument about the challenge and Nicholas tried to move on by saying “oh well Kenneth you did hesitate there but we all thought you were lovely there...”and Kenneth came in with this gay voice saying “"oh I bet you say that to all the boys!” I happened to have a mouthful of orange juice at the time which ended up all over my nice new shirt. It was just perfectly timed and phrased.No-one could admire Paul’s improvisational skills more than me. But at least he had variety in his personas. Unlike many one-dimensional "characters" in the media, he could change from fey to pompous to brutally aggressive to seductive to erudite to Cockney to Oxford and back to fey within 60 seconds.
Speaking of one-dimensional characters, I sometimes wonder why Julian Clary has stood the test of time with his single-entendre character, but I can only put it down to an indefinable bucketload of charisma and a great intelligence - and he always seems to be winking at you with a wry smile as if to say, "Yes, we both know it's silly, but just go along with it" and you do, because you're in on the joke.
Or not.

Well, in the episodes where Williams is featured he already is featured twice as much as the others. :D
If Kenneth was still i JAM, I can say for certain I would not have listened to JAM today.
And if what Clement say in the jam documentary is true, JAM gained significantly more listeners after Williams died so at least I'm not the only one with that opinion - although I might be in the minority on this list. :)Send your photos by email in seconds...
