The panellists below all had their day. Peter Jones was best in the late 70s, whilst Derek and Clement were better towards the end of their stint, when their Nick baiting had subsided and when they bounced off Paul, to everyone's benefit. Well Linda was great throughout her short stint.

If anyone is interested a new series of Fry's English Delight began today on Radio 4 (Monday 9am UK time).

Also on Channel 4 On Demand website, Julian has a 1980s TV show, a sit com, which I have watched (partly) for the first time recently. Paul Merton co wrote it and appears "acting" in some episodes...Terry and Julian. Its interesting to look for Paul's writing contribution.

I really liked Terry and Julian - I seem to recall it was Lee Simpson as Terry, and he played the perpetually harrassed/frustrated/embarrassed flatmate of the outrageously camp Julian Clary. Well worth a watch, although I guess it probably hasn't aged well.

I think Peter Jones was best from the eighties onwards.  He was terrible at the game (couldn't speak for 15 seconds without hesitation) and said relatively little, BUT his interventions were typically wonderful - often the highlight of the show.  He converted himself from an actor and writer to a comedian to my eyes.

One of the top 3 players ever IMO.

Agreed, Peter Jones rage above the others imo. Clement on second. Then it's getting a close race with the rest - except for Williams, who were a theatrical nighmare in my book.

Kenneth Williams. Listening to him cracks me up every time. I really do like it when Kenneth goes off on one during the shows. Clement changed his style as the show went on however was very consistant throughout his tenure.

My dream 4 would feature Kenneth Williams, Paul Merton and Kenneth Williams as the first 3, not sure about the other.

Well, in the episodes where Williams is featured he already is featured twice as much as the others. :D

If Kenneth was still i JAM, I can say for certain I would not have listened to JAM today.
And if what Clement say in the jam documentary is true, JAM gained significantly more listeners after Williams died so at least I'm not the only one with that opinion - although I might be in the minority on this list. :)

Too bad only two women are in this poll. We could list all three with Kenneth. It would serve him right.

I believe he's mostly viewed positively around here, but to me it's simply his way of speaking; I can't stand it. It's so incredibly annoying. Way too theatrical, it would be a relief to hear him speak like a normal human being just once.
As a matter of fact I get so annoyed by his voice that I hardly catch what's he's actually saying. Therefore I can't even say he's funny or not, cause I actually do not know...!

Hello Mathew,

He's probably only viewed negatively by some. Others will love him. The same is true for modern-day players. Personally Gyles Brandreth gets right up my goat but I know that others think he's great. I quite like Liza Tarbuck in JaM; I know others don't agree with me.

I have to say that I'm not a KW fan though. I'm not a fan of the older series either. I haven't decided whether those two are related; I suspect not because I'm not a fan of old Clues either.

I see JaM as working best when it's full of team players. I know it's an individual game but I like everyone to be involved and given a go and I love it when players bounce off each other. Some of my favourite players do just that; Paul Merton, Tony Hawks, Ross Noble, et al.

Kenneth seemed either to like to dominate proceedings or he retreated into a sulk, neither of which are characteristics which make for a good performance.

All, of course, IMHO. Other opinions are available.

Cheers

I think KW was a team player. He was regularly asked by the producer to rescue a show when there hadn't been a  laugh for a while. He was my favourite when I was a boy. I loved it when he won (a real rarity).  We now know that KW was a very unhappy (who loathed himself).  I think these days it would be much easier for him to come to terms with his homosexuality.

IMO JAM is much funnier now (more comedians) and I agree with you entirely that it's a team game. The really good stuff comes from interplay between two or more players.

Have been listening to the very early series' and their not as funny as nowadays. I'd also agree that Kenneth wasnt a team player as such. However there are many occasions when its Kenneth who would provide the laugh.

It will be good to hear the shows development through the series and the years.

I do love our Kenny, but like most rich dishes, a little of him can often go a long way  ;-)

But at least he had variety in his personas. Unlike many one-dimensional "characters" in the media, he could change from fey to pompous to brutally aggressive to seductive to erudite to Cockney to Oxford and back to fey within 60 seconds.

Speaking of one-dimensional characters, I sometimes wonder why Julian Clary has stood the test of time with his single-entendre character, but I can only put it down to an indefinable bucketload of charisma and a great intelligence - and he always seems to be winking at you with a wry smile as if to say, "Yes, we both know it's silly, but just go along with it" and you do, because you're in on the joke.

It's hard judging comedy from 40 years ago.  It's so heavily based on current culture, trends and attitudes.  How many people think Shakespeare's comedies are worth rolling around on the floor for?  Listen to "Much Binding in the Marsh" and ask yourself how funny it is now.  (But I must admit I quite like it even though I don't understand most of it.  Strange, that.)

We change, the recorded comedy doesn't.

Remember when Ben Elton was the hottest thing in funny stuff?  I remember thinking Alexei Sayle was the funniest man on TV.  Today I can watch their repeats and start remembering the great days I had watching paint dry.

It's a very rare thing for a comedy to transcend decades and still generate a genuine LOL: the Goons can still make me weep; an unexpected moment in Round the Horn can make me snort milk from my nose (especially impressive because I don't drink milk. Must see the doctor about that); I can alarm passersby as I grin while walking down the street with my MP3 player producing great Humph lines from ISIHAC.

The shelf life of comedy is not nearly as long as you might think.  If you don't believe me, try watching any Norman Wisdom movie.  (IMHO, of course).
So please be gentle judging old funnymen.  If they can even make you smile 50 years later, they must have been doing something brilliant back then.

Have been listening to the very early series' and their not as funny as nowadays. I'd also agree that Kenneth wasnt a team player as such. However there are many occasions when its Kenneth who would provide the laugh.

It will be good to hear the shows development through the series and the years.

I agree about Kenneth Williams- sometimes I can really enjoy him and other times I don't. ( and sometimes the sound level on him can be too low and one can barely hear him)

I like Peter Jones's way of reminding us all that it Is just a Game afterall. I rather liked his slightly grumpy old man ways near the end of his life.

I do miss Linda Smith-she certainly was One of a Kind.

Derek and his travels-no one can replace his style.

On the subject of Kenneth, my dad had the radio on at tea time every evening through the 1960s and 1970s, so I guess, as a small child, I heard every JAM episode back then though all I can recall is Kenneth's voice, and maybe Sheila, and certainly Nick, until I finally caught the bug and started recording the shows when our first cassette recorder appeared in the house. Like I think Dean has written, listening to Just A Minute back then was a case constantly wanting Kenneth to win, cheering every time he went in to the lead (right), feeling saddened if he let it slip, and whooping if he actually won, usually not against the 3 other boys. It was almost like watching an England World Cup football match.....wanting it to happen but knowing it never would...but having a jolly good want. That's what it was like back then. Throughout the late 1990s up to today I listened (when work allowed) for something different, and that was a team of players having fun together and really passing the subject around, almost like that non existent England football team should have been doing with the ball.

I still have not had the courage to go back in time and listen to Kenneth and that time. Additionally the Nick-bating was cruel, whereas in the last few years every series has had a subject concerning the Chairman, because the treatment would be pure fantasy and fun, rather than cruel.

It may be interesting to do what Matthew is doing. Start at the beginning and work one's way up to 2011.

So to the next round - Tony Hawks was the winner of the last poll.

This time the choice is between the lyrical wit who is one of only three to have appeared in every year since 1994 - and one of the old gang, the traveller, the toe twiddling, grand man of the panel.

Should KIT HESKETH-HARVEY or DEREK NIMMO go through to the next round. You have a day to decide. VOTE NOW!

A close vote but Derek Nimmo is added to the final eight...

So...

tough choice this - the witty and tough soapie star who made her mark in the early 90s? Or the avuncular actor and playwright who often came out with the funniest remark.

Peter Jones? Wendy Richard? A tough choice but one you must make, NOW!

Blimey, no doubt left with that result (so far anyway, 100% for Peter)

I must say this is the first one where I didn't vote instantly, in every other vote I went for my favourite without even thinking about it.
I was weighing up Peter's lack of skill at the game (come on you can't argue with that, Shirley) against his razor-sharp wit and brilliantly cutting one-liners and Wendy's performances.

I must say I liked her quite a lot in JAM, just a shame she came up against the Genius of Peter in this vote, in my world anyway.

Hi Don

Peter Jones was terrible at the game, and he couldn't blame lack of practice!  However, his contribution was sparing but usually exceptional.  It was him who made you spit out your food with laughter.

What a boring game it would be if they all went into it to win rather than entertain. Peter's contributions entertained.

As to Peter's 100% (so far), I'm not sure who would vote for Wendy Richard. Miserableness personified.

This poll is going to get more difficult in later rounds.  Much more difficult to choose between Peter Jones and Kenneth Williams for example

on Kenneth, I can understand why not everyone would appreciate him. He is entirely unique. But – one of the great things about Espen’s stream is that you can listen to a Kenneth era show chosen at random and then a Paul era show also chosen at random and compare them – all the time.

I know Nicholas has said the shows are funnier these days and someone else said the same here. I think the difference is these days is that when the panellists are speaking on the subject, they always try to have frequent laugh lines. Thirty and 40 years ago, they did sometimes take the subject seriously and try to be informative. Not just Kenneth and his historical subjects but the others too. Now they never do. Last year we had John Sergeant trying to take subjects seriously and he was ridiculed by all the others. But had he appeared in say 1974, he’d probably have been applauded for managing to continue for long periods without breaking the rules.

But if I am choosing shows to listen to, I usually pick a Kenneth-era show. Because he is the one that regularly makes me laugh out loud. Because he provides the unexpected, the moments of drama. He can change so frequently. There was one show I was listening to yesterday where he was speaking and Kenneth was then challenged and there was a bit of argument about the challenge and Nicholas tried to move on by saying “oh well Kenneth you did hesitate there but we all thought you were lovely there...”and Kenneth came in with this gay voice saying “"oh I bet you say that to all the boys!” I happened to have a mouthful of orange juice at the time which ended up all over my nice new shirt. It was just perfectly timed and phrased.

No-one could admire Paul’s improvisational skills more than me. He is the King Kong of the show these days and I do think if he chucked it in, the show would die. But
Kenneth with his voices, his different styles, his knowledge – just a genius.. and i think of all he did it was Just A Minute that showed him off best...

Yes, that what I was clumsily trying to get to. The fact the JAM can still be entertaining decades after broadcast is a testament to the skills of the panelists and the strategy of the game.

ISIHAC needs dozens of game formats to keep it fresh while JAM's single format has never changed.

I don’t disagree with this generally. But I reckon the genius of JAM is that 95 percent of the shows really do still stand up very well. The first season wasn’t good and I think some of the shows in the early 90s before Paul really hit his straps are flat. But there’s not many...

2.2 cents worth, including tax.

The only time I found Kenneth uncontorted was in the film Carry on Nurse from 1959 and he played a lovely, intelligent and warm hospital patient.

I was looking around for a video link which showed this but was unsuccessful, though some clips and a movie trailer are available.

This one (6th one down) is of interest for it shows Ken dubbed into German (early into the video)

on Kenneth, I can understand why not everyone would appreciate him.

Speaking of Julian, you may recall his red box incident when he was barred from UK TV for a while.

If you don't know about this and want to know more then this forum link may help

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=212813.

and Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAU7pATH5_M

Or not.
