Poor Wendy Richard - the first to receive no votes at all. Was she that bad? Or just up against tough competition in Peter Jones?

Oh well - I think this may be the toughest choice a yet. For so many reasons Linda Smith is a favourite with many who still mourn her far too early passing. But surely the King Kong of the past 20 years must make the final eight?

PAUL MERTON or LINDA SMITH? A tough choice indeed but a choice that must be made... VOTE NOW!!!!!

Well, yes, that's true. But (at least these days) JaM also has basically a different panel every two weeks whilst ISIHAC has a much tighter core of panellists.

I think it's reasonable to say that JaM has a constant(ish) format and a frequently changing list of personnel whilst ISIHAC has a frequently changing format but a constant(ish) list of personnel. I don't necessarily think that JaM's way of staying fresh is better than ISIHAC's. Indeed you could say that the fact that they're both still around after all of these years shows that both ways of doing it are equally successful.

Is than an inclusive or exclusive "or"?

I hope it's inclusive so that I can say "both".

I thought that this comment was interesting:

Peter Jones was terrible at the game

What does everybody think is the purpose of the game? To get the most points or to get the most laughs? I think that technically Sue Perkins is one of the best players ever...but she does not always make me laugh the most.

Just a thought.

As I have suggested before, it is a vehicle for comedians' skills so the point is, IMHO* obviously,  to get the most laughs**.
It's listed as "BBC Radio Comedy" after all. Same with all similar shows on both TV and radio: ISIHAC, HIGNFY, Buzzcocks etc

That's why I find in-depth discussions on here about non-strict-adherence to the rules a little tiresome and missing the point completely.

OK, there, I've said it, I'll get back to my bridge now...

Paul Merton is now in the final eight.

One more spot in the final eight - and you must choose between the current star, that clever and competitive comedienne Sue Perkins, and the show's self-described cult figure, Kenneth Williams.

I was sort of quoting Tim Rice in one of those excellent episodes with Stephen Fry, Clement and Paul. "Were having a  debate now".

They also had something about CCTV, repetition, no one would challenge as its on the card, and then Clement challenges, and a glorious paradox played up by Stephen in that pair of shows!

As someone said previously, if forget who, sorry, Sue is great at playing the game but she doesnt bring many laughs. Kenneth, in my opinion, was both.

There was a good point raised previously regarding is it better to be great at playing the game whilst not providing as much hilarity or vice versa. Terry Wogan brought so many laughs to when he participated a couple of seasons ago but wasnt that great a player.

Personally I'd rather have the laughs.

In the words of Nicholas:" It's the contribution that Counts" :)

( but if the person is Hopeless at the game it can get a bit hard to laugh after a while- JMO)

Kenneth Williams is added to the final eight. So the only one of the top eight seeds not to go through to the next round was Graham Norton. And he - eighth seed - was beaten by the ninth seed!

So to the quarter-finals. The first poll pits the two ex-MPs against each other. GYLES BRANDRETH or CLEMENT FREUD? A tough choice...

Clement Freud is the first semi-finallist.

Next - two old friends in a fight to the end. The actress whose appaearances stretch from the second show in 1967 to this year? Or the kingpin of the first 20 years... JAM's most unique character?

Choose between SHEILA HANCOCK and KENNETH WILLIAMS!

In my time zone (GMT-4) I get these latest polls first thing in the morning. An amusing and cheerful way to start the day. Thank you Dean. Sheila Hancock vs. Kenneth was awful tough though.  I voted for KW because I probably never would have found the show but for his involvement and I think his contribution was huge. I admire SH too but it would be about the same show today with or without her appearances, and I don't think that's true about Kenneth.
It is running 50-50! Those who haven't voted: remember to weigh in on this one. Dean, what will you do if you get a tie??

Unsurprisingly Peter Jones is in the top four.

So the last quarter-final - one of the giants of the gang of four - or the current master who the show is so reliant on.

PAUL MERTON? or DEREK NIMMO? The choice is yours. Decide who should be the last one in the top four.

I know this is only a bit of fun, but I would have been much happier if the poll had finished after the quarter final, when we had narrowed the list down to four people, i.e. a panel. The problem I have now and I know it's very silly to have these thoughts, is that every choice leads me to feel disloyal to the person who doesn't get my vote. It's true that I could have abstained but then I would feel like a wimp!  Life is hard, isn't it?

Having said that, I see we have had very little lobbying during the course of this poll, so (hoping that I'm not upsetting Dean or anybody else)..........

VOTE FOR KENNETH

Vote for him because he is deceased? I don't understand that either. Plus, Paul are no nobody when it comes to JAM either... he's an as essential part of current day JAM as Williams was back in the days (in my humble opinion of course)!

It's not that I criticize those who voted for Clement, of course not, there's no "right" or "wrong" here. It's just... Clement? That grumpy, high horse elitist old man? I just don't understand it. Not against Merton!

maybe we should have been debating each poll as we went along? It would have made things more interesting.

It is as Steve said all just a bit of fun. I do think it will be an interesting result if neither of the show’s biggest stars are in the final (currently Peter Jones is leading Kenneth Williams). Perhaps both Paul and Kenneth are both big turn-ons and – for some anyway, turn-offs.

But would JAM still be going if Kenneth hadn’t joined. Could Clement, Derek, Peter and Sheila or Andree Melly have carried the show through the 70s and 80s?

And if Wendy Richard or say Tim Rice had ended up as the fourth regular in the 90s... would the show still be going?

Anyway... all opinions are welcome!

Perhaps I should say though, for those not interested in the polls – and only 20 or so have been voting – that I think we will have  a break for a little while after the final poll in this series. So if you dread every email on this, there’s just the current one and then one more!

I am 49 and I have not voted.

I just wanted to say that with personal preference, liking someone better sometimes makes you feel a little disloyal to the "loser".

For example, I can see that Paul Merton is a good player but he is not always my preference. For me Kenneth Williams was nearly always entertaining. Now if I think about that long enough I could easily start to think Paul Merton is rubbish when compared to the "classics" like Kenneth Williams. When in truth I think Paul Merton is quite funny.

I think this may count as my spoiled vote.

Love as always

Not just deceased, but recently deceased, it's just the nostalgia factor, that's all. We don't feel as nostalgic about people long dead. But Clement was a genius.

The last poll - the final decision - there can be only one winner!

Who deserves to be our favourite panellist?

The master player whose wit, lugubriousness, and barbs at the chairman made him such a distinctive player of the game for 42 years?

Or the witty actor and playwright who never got really good at the game but often had the funniest lines, poking fun at the others?

CLEMENT FREUD or PETER JONES?

This poll will decide the official favourite player.

Personally i dont agree with the final 2. Can kind of understand why Clement but not Peter Jones, he wouldnt be in my top 10.

However the public have voted and that is the outcome. Kind of strange results, one final i dont think anyone would have predicted.

I think I would have bet my month's salary on Clement being in the final, but not Peter, as much as I enjoyed him being on the panel.

What I forgot was the British public's love of the underdog, which Peter certainly played up to, as well as our respect for someone who doesn't take the game/competition too seriously.

Not something you'd encounter too often in New Zealand, eh Dean? Winking smile

I would have put money on Peter Jones, but not Clement.

It's not exactly scientific poll (around 20 each time), but afficiandos like Peter Jones.  I'll say it again.  He can't play the game, but he is very funny

Best regards

I'm afraid to admit that I am one of the many who has not yet voted but would love to vote for Peter as my favourite. As I can't remember my yahoo identity I will not be able to vote but would love to see Peter win. He had a long career and was so British in his self deprecating way; so endearing. I can't understand why there is no biography of him. When I move from Australia to England later this month I hope to make Wem in Shropshire (his home town) one of the first places I visit. Surely there I will find some reference to him?!
