I was just wondering if folks connect certain comedians with certain shows?

I was listing to an old ISIHAC the other day and Paul Merton was on. He was very good, but at first I thought "Oh that's strange". I usually associate him with JAM. For me Linda Smith will always be associated with The News Quiz. In my mind it was the perfect outlet for her. I always think of "The 99p Challenge" when I hear Sue Perkins' voice. Etc Etc.

Is this just me?

Love, David

Nope, you are not alone there.
I couldn't imagine Barry, Graham, Tim doing JAM.
Notwithstanding they wouldn't be very good at it (comparatively), at first anyway.

Regarding Tim and Graeme, I discovered a new free podcast last night, an Australian one called The Goodies Podcast. There's 80 epsiodes available to download free from iTunes - had a listen to a couple so far - quite interesting.

There was mention made on one of the Goodies' tradition of sending up certain personalities - chiefly Rolf Harris, Des O'Connor and Scottish singer Andy Stewart - and Nicholas Parsons was mentioned as a regular target of their satire.

Barry Cryer's done quite a few JAMs and Graeme one or two in the seventies. Without checking Dean's database I think I remember Tim appearing as well, but it would surely have been a one-off.

I totally agree that the three of them are best suited to the largely scripted ISIHAC format rather than the more informal "blokes talking toot in a pub" style used by JAM, which I can't get enough of.

Cheers everybody,

Matt

Funny thing is, I associate Graham first and foremost with his earliest talkshows - they were too good for words. So every time I hear him in JAM I see this crystal clear picture of him before me. The other voices are much more anonymous - a majority of them I do not even know how look at all.
First time I saw a picture of Paul I got shocked, I had pictured a *completely* different look.

But back on topic, after all these JAM episodes I *still* picture Graham on the TV screen each time I hear him talk. So yeah, once an artist establish an image (in all meanings of that word) it's really hard to change it.

Blimey, no wonder I couldn't imagine Tim or Graeme appearing.
They haven't made many appearances and none recently according to Dean's episode log

Barry - 26 appearences, last = 2001
Tim - 3 appearences, last = 1981
Graeme - 7 appearences, last = 1982

Mmm, different skills for different types of shows. You probably have a point there. Having said that Graeme Garden really seems to match my personal sense of humor. His wit and (especially) his timing really make a connection. I like him in a number of different things.

I know that he is one of the creators of The Unbelievable Truth but I think his style fits in very well...he was great in Hamish and Dougal...The Mad Monk (anybody)...

By the way, I think it is a little limiting to view ISIHAC as just a scripted show...but maybe that is a discussion for another day.

I think it's definitely something that people do, association.
It all depends where you first "met them" and how strong that first impression was.
You always get this: "where's that person from!" thought

I have:
Paul Merton / Steven Frost - Whose Line is it Anyway
Stephen Fry - QI & his books
Kenneth Williams - Carry Ons, Just William, Willo the Wisp!
Clement Freud / Peter Jones - JAM!
Derek Nimmo - One of our dinosaurs are missing, then JAM.

Graeme did seven JAM shows, Tim three – they were both very good, especially Tim. His first show which he won is a classic, I think.

Some advice to other board members - never post after midnight after a hard day's work.

The Meddling Monk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meddling_Monk

Played by Graeme Garden
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_Garden

I was so busy checking how you spell Graeme that I got the character name wrong.

By the way Graeme has played on a few Big Finish Productions. If you get chance to hear "Max Warp" he is very good.

I am showing my age when I say to the following:

Paul Merton - The Series - on TV, available on Channel 4 catch up
Stephen Fry - a bit of Fry and Laurie
Kenneth Williams - Carry On
Clement Freud - on TV - dog food commercial and reading "Grimble", together with a spot of cooking, on Jackanory. Plus I recall seeing his face on British Rail butty wrappers.
Peter Jones - popping up in Norman Wisdom films and the like on TV in black and White - he has a small part towards the end of Press For Time (1966) movie currently on iplayer.
Derek Nimmo - All Gas and Gaiters on TV, and the Penguin choc biscuit commercial (submitted a few weeks ago).
Tim and Graeme (and Bill) will always be Goodies for me, though I recall Hello Cheeky (Tim, Barry) on the Radio - I don't recall anyone on here's been collecting those episodes.
Charles Collingwood - well, obviously as a voice from the Archers, but visually on Sticky Moments, which was an early Julian Clary vehicle, part written by Paul, as a recurring judge character I recall.
Nicholas - from JAM and Sale of the Century
Sheila - JAM and Carry On Cleo.
Tony - JAM
Kit - JAM ...no idea what he looks like.

I thought this was interesting!

pedantic nit-pick... I am a great lover of Stcky Moments, but I don't think Charles was on that. I think the show you are thinking of is All Rise For Julian Clary - and the judge character was played by Frank Thornton, better known for Are You Being Served.

anyway, I enjoyed reading that

I stand corrected. I have just done a Google search and he was the score keeper for Noel Edmond's Telly addicts 1994-6.
I tried to find a youtube clip to see if that is what I recalled, but there is none for those years.

However at 4.00 here is Derek Nimmo asking the questions about his career.

Cheers,

Dave

I thought this was interesting!

pedantic nit-pick... I am a great lover of Stcky Moments, but I don't think Charles was on that. I think the show you are thinking of is All Rise For Julian Clary - and the judge character was played by Frank Thornton, better known for Are You Being Served.

anyway, I enjoyed reading that

Thanks Don. I do think I have seen him before. Found www.UKGameshows.com.

Here's what they say about Nicholas:

 Biography

Parsons has acted in comedy roles, at one stage being straight man to Arthur Haynes and Benny Hill. He is best known for his 14-year stint as host of Norwich-based quiz Sale of the Century.
On radio, he has presented public speaking parlour game Just a Minute since time began (or since 1967 to be exact). The format was converted to a BBC daytime show.

Trivia

He acted as the narrator in the stage version of the Rocky Horror Show.
Parsons went to the same school as Margaret Thatcher - Grantham & Kesteven High School for Girls (make your own joke up). His father was a GP in the area, though it is doubtful whether Thatcher was one of his patients.
He served as Rector of the University of St Andrews from 1988 to 1991, and was succeeded in the post by Nicky Campbell.
He was the original choice to play the Gamesmaster (q.v.)
As a child, he suffered from dyslexia, stuttering and migraines.
He was resident comedian at the Windmill Theatre for six months.
At one point he held the Guinness world record for the longest after-dinner speech, only for the previous record-holder, Gyles Brandreth, to later win it back.
He was a keen waterskier and at one point his daughter suggested he run a ski school in Spain. However, Parsons enjoyed British life too much.
Appropriately for the host of Just a Minute, he is also a keen horologist and is a member of the of the British Watch and Clock Makers' Guild.
With the summer 2010 series of Just a Minute, Parsons became the oldest person ever to host a British game show, overtaking the late Humphrey Lyttelton.

Gamesmaster was cohosted by Patrick Moore! DPB

Oh yes, a bit of reminiscing!

The first time I encountered Paul Merton (knowingly) was on Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1, back when "Paul Merton: The Series" was just starting, and he was doing the interview circuit to promote it. I had seen him on TV before, but didn't know his name until then.

Classic foursome: As with Dave B, I used to read "Grimble", so that's where Clement Freud came in. And Kenneth Williams was always in the background with Carry On, Willo the Wisp, etc. Peter Jones was the voice of The Book. I can't remember where I first saw Derek Nimmo, but I have a strong memory of his guest appearance in Neighbours (when Madge and Harold visited England, he played an eccentric lord).

As for Nicholas Parsons, I first saw him in a stage show in Chichester, which I can't remember much about except that I believe he played God. I was very young and it was a Sunday School trip. I don't think I had any knowledge of anything else he'd done at that point, except that he must be famous because his name was big in the programme.

Kit Hesketh-Harvey was also someone I was aware of before I got into JAM. I saw his double-act, Kit and the Widow, several times. (Website: http://www.kitandthewidow.com )

Hi

showing even more age
Peter Jones and Sheila Hancock from the rag trade (which if you caught all gas and gaiters you should have seen this too)
Interestingly clement only from JAM - missed his TV appearances
many of the newer comedians have been merely voices until the playing of QI out here in Australia; and Graham Norton's show has been being relayed so he is now a bit more well known here.

On a side note - how many people get the digest version? This has two impacts: I couldn't do the polls as by the time i got to read the digest the poll was closed, and could some people trim their exchanges - it gets difficult to find the new material in digests full of loooong interactions.

It definitely is annoying for the digest readers if people don't trim their posts.

As to the poll, every time I closed one, I immediately opened the next, so there would always have been one open.

Having said that, do all the digests come out at the same time each day? If there is a common time, we could try and time the polls around that next time. Or we could just keep them open longer, though personally I liked the pace of having one per day, the quickish turn-around.

Incidentally, if you're interested in how many get the digests go to the members section on the group website - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/just-a-minute/members
you can see there who has chosen digests/individual emails/no emails at all and do a count-up. (I'm assuming you can all see this and it isn't just open to me to see.)

cheers, Dean

There really is summat wrong with your email address LC.
Even the JAM Yahoo group cannot get a reply so you're marked as Bouncing in the members list.

Just returning this thread to the subject and not deviating from the subject........

Where can you find 5 minor JAMmers in one place.

Here......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn6Mm38C1bc

You only get the fifth point, a bonus point, if you can find the fifth celebrity.

Or Espen can nab the question for the JAM exam. It would be good to have some visuals. But you can only have it, if you can answer it.

Dave

P.S. There is more of interest in the right hand list on youtube...Barry, Tim, ISIHAC and for nostalgia check out the Betamax years for a belly laugh.
