Topic: Where's Paul Merton?

I've just been listening to the last series 61 and out of 8 episodes, he has only been in 4 of them. Presumably he is on holidays since it is still warmish weather in the UK. Anyone know if he is cutting back? You really notice it when he isn't there. The second last episode:

773/61/7 19 September 2011, Nicholas Parsons with Julian Clary, Josie Lawrence, Phill Jupitus and Rick Wakeman, my first day at school.

was a bit flat - by the end it was as if Nicholas was just trying to get to the end a.s.a.p. Even though it had a great cast - all funny people usually - somehow it was as if they were a bit flat.

When I was in Edinburgh, the producer Tilusha Ghelani agreed to meet up with me, but she got busy and cancelled. If we had caught up, this would have been a question I would have asked her. So I don’t know. But my guess is that Paul was supposed to be at that recording but pulled out for some reason, perhaps he was ill or something. It just seems too weak a team to have been planned that way.

I think for the other recording he was filming his next TV series.

I agree with you that shows without Paul miss a lot. The first show with Tony, Gyles, Pam and Miles Jupp was the weakest show in years, though the second one was a bit better.

It would be interesting to hear a show where Graham was in the lead – I have the feeling that he is the only one, Paul apart, who could really take the lead role. Other possibilities are Stephen Fry and Ross Noble though neither probably play the game often enough to get really really good at it.

Paul has also been missing from the sunday night Improv shows at the London Comedy club lately- he must be on holiday or doing a project.

Have I got News tv series starts taping the 13th of this month as well as JAM recordings later this month.

when I read this thread about where is Paul,  I googled that as a phrase!  I ended up mostly with links to his own web site but also to an article in the Guardian (I'm not normally a reader!)  but it ended with this quote which I think is great.

He seems so happy today that when he talks of his frustration at not having more time to make and direct films, I suggest he could always stop doing Have I Got News for You, or stop doing Just a – but before the words are even out of my mouth he interrupts.
"Ooh no, I could never stop doing Just a Minute," he exclaims, looking appalled. "Oh God, no. I still can't believe I'm in it."
