Topic: Deflation? Nic's errors league table

Does anyone feel deflated by the most recent series?

Not listened to many as been busy...but I loved those with Sheila in them. I think Tony was in there. Felt like an early 2000s classic.

I am a Tony fan...he has a very funny way without having to shout, and he never is rude to Nicholas.......which is a shame really...as being rude to Nic is always fun.

That said, over the past decade its really Nic treating Tony badly that has soured things a bit....such as telling Tony he was being too keen by challenging for BBC, and when Jenny, I think it was, made a wrong repetition challenge, Nic changed the wording of the challenge, despite Tony's appeal for reasoned consideration, and Nic's challenge was also wrong, but awarded against Tony. Or the time when Tony won, and Nic said, tell you what, lets say everyone won, which clearly upset Tony. I do wish Tony would stand up for himself against Nic.

It would be interesting to have an analysis of Nic's mistakes series by series...that accepting a challenge for repetition that was wrong, or not rewarding a correct challenge of repetition. You cannot really consider deviation as that's usually a matter of opinion, and hesitation, often where one draws the line. Nor can one add in deliberately wrong decisions - such as giving the new person another go, or allowing someone in full flow to continue, or accepting a wrong decision made by the audience. Or totting up the points at the end wrongly so everyone draws.

My impression is that Nic's repetition errors have become fewer in the last few years.

Dave

Subject: [just-a-minute] Paul Merton Radio documentary, podcasts, the latest JAM series

Hi

The BBC documentary of the week podcast is Paul Merton on the Leeds Variety Music Hall
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/r4choice

Als recommend subscribing to Friday Night Comedy - you get the news or now quiz usually, though the recent series where one person was interviewed one week and interviewed someone else the next was great (especially for new order fans).

comedy of the week is a bit hit or miss - as you would expect

Finally, does anyone else feel deflated by the most recent series? Pam Ayers was herself (again), Gyles bluster as ever, and I've never really warmed to Tony Hawks. Rick Wakeman and Phil Jupitus were like a hint of the past where people tried to talk n the topic - I remember someone in the last series doing that and being slated for being 'boring'. It seemed tired and flat (from a listener for at least 40 years)

I'm a Tony fan too, and agree with you. Tony is so polite and such a team player. Some of those moments are really undeserved.

I think Nic treat him like that cause he's considered one of the semi-regulars. He's not always that considerate against them, and usually he don't need to. It's just... Tony is kinda different from the rest, in my opinion.

I totally agree - I think the difference between Nic during the 2000s versus Nic during the 1990s is stellar, no less. Some of the judgements during the 90s are just horribly bad. It's like he didn't pay attention at all. It sounds like he basically accepted every challenge, especially from the regulars, and changed his mind along the way.

As a matter of fact I think we have to get to this side of the new millennium shift before he's become fairly good.
He's always been charming though. :)

It’s always interesting to see what perceptions people have about the show. When you transcribe shows as I do, errors in repetition judgements do become pretty clear. I don’t have any feeling Nicholas is improving on these – actually it’s pretty clear his hearing is slowly deteriorating, which of course is understandable in a man aged 88.

Of course it’s not all about hearing. Often in these cases, the panellist him/herself will agree they repeated a word when actually they didn’t.

I gave some views on the season a couple of weeks ago. To elaborate, I do think the shows with Paul, Sheila, Tony and Graham were up with the very best. The two shows at Edinburgh were good too, but not as good. the shows with Julian, Josie, Rick Wakeman and Phill Jupitus were okay, below average but okay. I thought Josie held things together – she  is on her way to being a real star, being both very funny and very competitive.

The shows with Tony, Gyles, Pam Ayres and Miles Jupp were disappointing. I’ve just transcribed the first of these and Pam and Miles really were “non-starters” to use Kenneth’s phrase. Pam does have a unique style, which is good, but she just isn’t competitive enough, or consistently funny enough. She needs to be on with three strong players where her contributions would add spice. Miles was struggling with the game – he eventually worked that out and won the second show. But in mastering the game itself, he wasn’t very funny.

So it was up to Tony and Gyles to keep the show going. I think Gyles gets better every time he is on – has anyone else noticed he almost never falls back into his old routine poems and stories any more. He’s inventive and funny and likes the banter. Tony I think isn’t strong enough to hold a show together. There are times in the show when something funny is said between the panellists – Gyles was teasing Pam about her marriage. Now if Paul had been there, he would have joined in and kept it going – but Tony isn’t quick enough to do the same.

of course it’s hard to judge Tony by the standard of Paul – there aren’t many people as funny and quick as Paul. nevertheless the producers do seem to regard Tony as the alternate lead player if Paul is away.... and sorry Tony fans, but I don’t think he is good enough.

I haven’t thought before about whether Nicholas is harder on Tony than anyone else. I’ll listen to some recent shows and think about it.

Sorry to drop off topic for just a minute but, by coincidence, I was booking tickets last night to see Tony's new touring show - at the Lowry in Salford where Miriam saw her JaM recording, funnily enough.

Anyway, I discovered that Tony's film "Round Ireland With A Fridge" is available to view online for free with an optional donation. It's based on his best-selling book and Tony plays himself. Josie also makes an appearance in it as Tony's agent.

The film itself has won several awards at film festivals but it's got mixed reviews elsewhere. Nevertheless, my OH and I enjoyed watching it - I plugged the laptop into the big TV for a better experience - and made a small donation.

Anyway, if anyone wants a look it's at http://www.roundirelandwithafridge.com/

Cheers

I really liked the book, but found the film too self-conscious, badly acted and with too much awkwardly-inserted romantic subplot. Mind you, I really like Tony on JAM.
