Bonfire Night isn't celebrated in any of the countries I've lived in outside of the UK (South Africa, Ghana, Australia). In Australia there are organised firework displays set up by professionals for occasions such as New Year but nothing on the 5th of November. Besides, November is the start of the bushfire season and where I am (the wheatbelt of Western Australia) you need to get a permit to start any outdoor fire at this time of year and sending fiery rockets up into the sky is not a wise idea.

Shame really, as I can still remember my father bringing home the box of Brocks Fireworks and the smell when the box was opened. I used to spend ages sorting them out in anticipation, although the fireworks would inevitably turn out to be a bit crap.

In the UK it's also the time of year when people are generally burning up their Autumnal garden waste. I've always associated the bonfires with the older tradition of lighting signal beacons in times of celebration or emergency, such as the arrival of the Spanish Armada, or maybe the baddies in The Lord of the Rings.

By the way, a subject along any of these lines has never come up in Just a Minute.
