Dean, I hope you have a big, big smile on your face.

Congratulations to you and your fellow New Zealanders.

I am not a big rugby fan, but it’s hard to understate the importance of this to New Zealanders... there was fireworks going off in my street last week

Completely off topic -

I would be interested to learn if bonfires and fireworks on Guy Fawkes Night 5th November is now limited to the UK or if it is still (?) recognised in our sister nations. Maybe they save their fireworks for a national day?

Fireworks were banned in most Australian states many years ago. Ironically, only the A.C.T. (home of parliament) allows their sale.

Bonfire Night isn't celebrated in any of the countries I've lived in outside of the UK (South Africa, Ghana, Australia). In Australia there are organised firework displays set up by professionals for occasions such as New Year but nothing on the 5th of November. Besides, November is the start of the bushfire season and where I am (the wheatbelt of Western Australia) you need to get a permit to start any outdoor fire at this time of year and sending fiery rockets up into the sky is not a wise idea.

Shame really, as I can still remember my father bringing home the box of Brocks Fireworks and the smell when the box was opened. I used to spend ages sorting them out in anticipation, although the fireworks would inevitably turn out to be a bit crap.

In the UK it's also the time of year when people are generally burning up their Autumnal garden waste. I've always associated the bonfires with the older tradition of lighting signal beacons in times of celebration or emergency, such as the arrival of the Spanish Armada, or maybe the baddies in The Lord of the Rings.

By the way, a subject along any of these lines has never come up in Just a Minute.
