Topic: FTP access to nylon.net uploads

Hi all. In an effort to make downloading easier for you guys (and harder for outsiders), I've created a FTP account for you to access my JAM and other files.

Using FTP means you can download in batches, rather than getting a file at a time using HTTP.

Just don't hammer the site mercilessly - be thoughtful of others.

Using an FTP client like Filezilla, set up a site as follows:

Host: ftp.nylon.net
User: jam@...
Password: nickparsons
The default remote directory is /up
Set transfer mode to passive.

Let me know if you have problems connecting.

Mark

thanks mark,

found out that Mac OS X has its on built-in ftp client ( Command-K brings it up )  but for some reason, wasn't able to connect with that.
with filezilla, it was a breeze connecting and downloading went smoothly.

thanks again, mark :-)

Hi Mark

I've just been trying to connect with Filezilla but keep getting the error message "530 Login authentication failed". Not sure whether this is because I'm using the wrong username [I've tried both "jam@..." and my real yahoo email address] or something else I might be doing wrong. Do you have any way of seeing from your end why I'm failing to connect?

Thanks and regards.
Charlie

Thanks for the lightning fast reply Mark. This is what I'm getting:

Resolving address of ftp.nylon.net
Status: Connecting to 72.29.74.111:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------
Response: 220-You are user number 1 of 50 allowed.
Response: 220-Local time is now 01:18. Server port: 21.
Response: 220-This is a private system - No anonymous login
Response: 220-IPv6 connections are also welcome on this server.
Response: 220 You will be disconnected after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Command: USER jam@...
Response: 331 User jam@... OK. Password required
Command: PASS ***********
Response: 530 Login authentication failed
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

I deduce from this that I am making the initial connection successfully, but then being rejected. I've been very careful typing the password. Does your server software have a log which would tell you why it is rejecting me?

Regards
Charlie

Just to be clear, are you typing "jam@..." for the username, or "jam@..."?

Hi Mark

I think I'm missing something here. You ask if I'm typing a or b when, as far as I can see, your a and b are identical.

To be explicit, I'm typing 7 consecutive characters without any spaces - namely the lowercase letters j, a and m, followed by the at symbol, followed by three fullstops.

Thanks.
Charlie

Hi Charlie

You need to write "jam at nylon dot net" as an email address. Sounds like e-mail addresses might not show up on the messages on Yahoo! Groups pages.
