Hi folks. The ABC's JAM broadcasts are due to stop on 31 January 2012.

They might be persuaded to change their schedule if enough people asked them nicely to persevere with their JAMcasts.

The address for contacting the ABC is

http://www.abc.net.au/contact/contactabc.htm

Let's see what some gentle pressure can do :-)

Mark

Hi,

Although I'm not affected by the decision of ABC to stop broadcasting JAM, I'm interested why they're making this change.

Presumably audience figures / feedback is low. I know people in Australia will be able to access JAM via the BBC's website, but I would have thought only a relatively few people would actively do this.

Any thoughts about the decision? Is JAM no longer attracting large enough audiences down-under, has it ever?

Hi dagi,

Maybe a bit of a crossed wire here. Mark is referring to the ABC currently broadcasting archive episodes of JAM, mostly from around 1969. Moreover, they are being broadcast at 0530hrs on Tuesday mornings so the number of radio listeners must be in double figures, if that. Thanks to Mark, these high-quality repeats are being used to upgrade our own communal, low-quality recordings of those early shows.

I don't think current, up to date recordings of JAM have ever been broadcast on Australian radio, the quality of which is mostly overtly-commercial and dire. There's no Australian equivalent of BBC Radio 4.

There is a sizeable population of people here in Australia who do appreciate decent comedy and content. Within the last month or so I've been to packed houses in Perth, of all places, to see Dylan Moran and also QI Live with Stephen Fry. Largely expatriate audiences, I fear, and as a percentage of the overall population not likely to support a quality radio station sending out JAM on primetime slots.

The media here (I live in rural Western Australia) is very commercial and increasingly US-orientated. I've not watched local TV for years (I can't stand the adverts), which is one reason why JAM and this forum are so precious to me and why everyone's contributions are so much appreciated.

Best Christmas wishes to you and all. Now I suppose I'd better get back to writing these f**king Christmas cards.

Cheers,

Matt

Yep. Matt is right. I was referring to the early-morning repeats.  They were always scheduled to end at the end of Jan, I thought some vociferous feedback to Radio National might make them realise they have actually an international audience.

That makes me think - I wonder whether non-Australians can access RN's internet feed.  Can someone try it out?  If so, you can do your own JAM recordings!  RN is at http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/

Cheers

So, RN is available overseas!  Set your world clock to 05:30 EST on Tuesday (e.g. London = Monday 18:30, I believe) and you'll be able to get your very own classic JAMs !

Hi Mark

The ABC RN stream is not only available to listen to in the UK, but available to be ripped with suitable software that includes a scheduler (I use NetTransport but there are probably better) without having to go to the trouble of "tuning in" at the right time. My PC is invariably on at 18:30 (unless I'm on holiday) and I've been getting upgrades of My Word and My Music for a long time, as well as the more recent run of JAM. Whenever I remember to look, the download folder has another load of 96/44 mp3s in it - all I have to do is top and tail.

But I agree - a great shame they're not continuing the JAM run. Presumably not as popular in Australia as My Word, My Music and Goon Show - all of which seem to run permanently.

Regards
Charlie
