Hi,

Some of you may know me and some not. This is Paul Hurwood.

You may have received and email from me some time Sunday morning. If you did
please don't open it. My yahoo email account was used to send out links to
websites that lead to a virus/malware being installed on your computer.

My apologies for any problems caused. I have changed my email passwords and
have deleted my contacts book from my online email pages. I know it was from
the web page as it used my full name in the From list.

Again I really am sorry about this. I hope it won't happen again.

All The Best

This same "Paul" has been posting to a lot of lists recently.

No one can "hack" into any account unless the owner leaves it open for others to get in. Some people really should not be allowed to have email accounts until they can pass the exam.

What an unfounded load of bilge.  I suppose I could spend my time explaining how and why this is wrong, but in the interests of brevity, there's more than one way to skin a cat, and this is no exception.

Furthermore, that's no way to speak to someone that's been so generous to this community. I'll happily give him benefit of doubt.

In conclusion, access to the Internet is not a license to be condescending and rude.

One simple thing you can do is make your password is not easy to 'guess' with a dictionary of words or words with letters replaced with numbers.
There are other ways and means to hack an account but the script-kiddies will just download a dictionary and a pre-written hack script and off they go so you will be closing a door to at least some of the muppets.

Take care out there, it's a dangerous place...

I would have agreed with you if I had not had one of my e-mail accounts hacked and it was eventually closed by hotmail. I felt awful that people had received spam through me and there was nothing really that I could do about it. It has also happened to me from co-workers. There accounts were hacked and I started getting strange e-mails.

I don't know how it happens but it does. I don't know Paul but he seems a nice, generous guy. I certainly don't think it is something that anyone would do intentionally and he probably feels a little embarrassed even though he has done nothing wrong (that is how I felt anyway).

Love, David

It's no real person who does this, it's a virus.

Paul, there's no use in changing passwords etc. You need to clean your PC with a virus killer, or if that doesn't work I'm afraid you'll need to do a clean reinstall of the system.

If you are a Windows user Microsoft has a decent virus killer called "Microsoft Security Essentials". It's free, just Google it and you'll get a link to a download in your language.

I agree an anti-virus scan is a good idea but there is a fair chance your AV program of choice will find nothing, it is a good idea to try more than one, but not at the same time. MSE is well regarded these days but it may not do the trick.

Viruses are only one of several ways to hack email accounts.

> there's no use in changing passwords etc.
I think you'll find that is a recommended course of action to take in such cases

Hi All,

I just thought I should update you all on the situation. I'll keep it brief.

As you may notice this is coming from a different email address. I have
closed down the whole Yahoo account that caused yesterday mornings problems.
That means email and groups account. From what I can gather there can be no
further emails from that account that can cause harm.

I have scanned my PC with Norton's Anti Virus twice and on Epsen and Don's
suggestions have tried out MSE (which I actually quite like.) I have run a
quick scan with MSE and that came up clean and another Full scan is planned
for over night. Spybot has been running the whole time.

I am pretty sure that it was a web based problem as I checked out Yahoo's
handy Account Information tool and at 8.56 Sunday morning my account was
accessed allegedly by someone in India using Yahoo Mobile.

Anyway. I think I have done as much as I can for today. Thanks to almost
everyone for the advice. I shall now await the exam result through the door
after, hopefully passing this exam.

All The Best

Paul

Oh yeah.. News Quiz coming up tomorrow evening.

Hullo there.

You might guess I'm here because I'm a just a minute fan. This is true. I've been a listener since I could hear, one might say, and I have quite a few of the episodes but was looking around to see if there were fellows like me, who learnt a little too much from listening, and perhaps might want to also fill a few gaps in their collections.

Hi Paul,

I empathise. A friend of mine had similar problems with spam emails (and worse) being sent apparently from her Yahoo account. In her case simply changing the password seemed to sort it out - fortunate as she used it for her business email too. She now has her own domain name so she can switch email suppliers and keep her address. In her case I virus scanned and spyware scanned her PC to the ends of the earth and found nothing - we put it down to a simple account hijacking.

Yours is only the second time I've seen this sort of thing happen and both involved Yahoo emails. I draw no conclusions on such a low sample size but it does make you wonder...

Anyway, just to say thanks for your captures - much appreciated in this corner.

Cheers

kJ

Thank you for that Paul & kJ, that supports what I have been saying.

Yahoo seems to be a target for these scum of late.
I have noticed an increase in spam in my Yahoo Inbox and Spam trap over the past couple of months.

As I have said before, make your password STRONG - not a real word, a random mix of upper case, lower case, numeric and non-alphanumeric characters.
I know it's harder to remember but you will regret it one day if you don't.

Also, never use the same username/password for different services/platforms.
It has been known for successful password cracks to be used elsewhere.

I have worked for a large UK IT Service provider for many years, some of them in network Security, so have some idea of what I am talking about.

As I said before, another thing to remember is that no Malware protection software will protect against everything despite their adverts.
Just because your A-V of choice finds nothing, it doesn't mean there is nothing there so don't get too complacent over a clear scan.

Here endeth the Internet Security lesson...

Is the groups list of missing episodes in the files section up to date - i doubt i have anything you guys haven't got, but I'm happy to take a look...

We’ve had a third member (I believe) unintentionally send out a spam message, all within about two weeks.

A couple of years back I introduced a rule whereby no-one can post to the group until approved for posting to stop spambots. That has been effective in stopping them (they don’t even join the group any more).

I am worried about this current trend. Would people like me to moderate messages so that obvious spam doesn’t get sent out to all? Obviously that would mean some conversation wouldn’t flow as easily as I am not at the laptop 24/7.

Post your views and I’ll think about it too

Personally I'm aware enough to filter out the spam even when it is well formed and presented as something else.  I think more of this type of spam is spoofed and not from the PC of the person's email address used. The issue is once a cluster of email addresses is captured by the spammers they can/will use that grouping to email others within the group while rotating the spoofed originating email address.

Although this group is generally offers a low volume of posts per day/week I'm not sure you want the admin overhead of approving each email, which might lead to people posting multiple times when their message does not appear.

I don't think the problem is big enough to change the current process.

Hey there gang,
I have been listening through my collection of 'Just a Minute' right from the first episode and I am now up to number 310. Unfortunately I find that my copy of this episode is incomplete.
So... I am wondering, does anyone out there have a complete copy of episode 310? I would be eternally grateful.
Cheers.

Hi all. When I put up the complete series 17, I only had that incomplete version of #310. I have since come into a full version, and here's a link to it. Enjoy!

Message 33 / 100

ahem,

i would like to put on record an instance when a panelist wrongly challenged himself for repetition. Nicholas Parsons got it wrong too.

from the transcript of (Radio, 17 September 1973).

THEME MUSIC

ANNOUNCER: We present Clement Freud, Peter Jones, Warren Mitchell and Jean Marsh in Just A Minute. And as the Minute Waltz fades away here to tell you about it is our chairman Nicholas Parsons.

NICHOLAS PARSONS: Thank you, thank you very much indeed, hello and welcome to Just A Minute. And we're delighted to welcome back Warren Mitchell and Jean Marsh to play the game with Peter Jones and Clement Freud, who have played it so often before. Once again they're going to try and speak if they can on some unlikely subject without hesitation, without repetition and without deviating from the subject on the card. And we begin the show this week with Clement Freud. And Clement, the subject that Ian Messiter has thought of is cobber. Would you talk on cobber for 60 seconds starting now.

CLEMENT FREUD: Cobber is the sort of thing that nice people are called in Australia. You don't say "good morning sir", "good afternoon gentleman". Or anything of that kind. Cobber suffices. Taxi drivers are hailed by that name. Bus conductors stop when you address them as... I am sorry, I said address before. I think somebody ought to buzz. I'll buzz myself.

BUZZ

NP: Clement Freud, you've challenged yourself.

CF: I repeat, I repeated myself and being a totally honest man...

NP: Well you were listening extremely well, much better than everybody else! You get a point for a correct challenge and you keep... And there are 33 seconds left on cobber with you starting now.

....

just sharing :-)

Hi folks

I don't mean to be pedantic (actually I do mean to be pedantic but it's polite to say that). Clement was wrong to say he'd repeated "address" but Nicholas was correct to give against him. By the time Clement buzzed he had repeated "address".

In fact in most of these "self challenges" this sort of self-fulfilling prophesy is likely to happen and so Nicholas will usually be right in allowing the challenge.

Cheers

Hi Mark,

I'm fantastically grateful for your "TUT" uploads, thanks.

Just one tiny observation; the first three episode files are about 20Mb each while the fourth is nearly 290Mb.

Bunging them on the iPod mow regardless.

Thanks again,

PS: Have just acquired the fourth series of "The Museum of Curiosity". Anyone interested? I feel I have to try and give back something to this forum.

Yupp, something went badly wrong with that one.
Not only is it too big, it won't play in my Windows Media Player either.
WMP says it's corrupted.

It plays in VLC OK but that will play ANYTHING!

Well, I'll be kippered. I don't know how that came about.  It's the size of the FLAC original.

I've re-combobulated it and saved it back to a manageable 20M.

Thanks for the heads-up!

* JAM is back on February 6th for a series of eight shows. According to the BBC listings, the first shows will feature Paul Merton, Gyles Brandreth, Jenny Eclair and Ross Noble. Kit Hesketh-Harvey, Sue Perkins, Julian Clary, Liza Tarbuck, Charles Collingwood and Josie Lawrence are also appearing in the season.

* There are still two shows to be recorded and they are being recorded in Bangalore in India on January 26th. Paul and one other British regular are going to India, to join local comedians on the panel.

* Nicholas has done
a really good interview here for Radio Ulster. There isn't a hell of a lot that is truly fresh for the JAM fanatic, but it's still more interesting than most interviews with Nicholas. Well worth a listen. And gee, doesn't his voice sound a lot younger than 87!

Thanks for the info Dean.

I'm still a bit miffed at the BBC because I keep asking them to invite me to appear on JAM.  I say "Please" a lot, and they just reply "Repetition".  :-(

Is there any news when the JAM TV shows will air?

The producer told me it would be in March at the end of the radio season – so that would be late March.

I realize this may not be easy to organise with us JAMers being World

Maybe a mass letter writing to the BBC and to Nicholas to show our
support?

For those recording the ABC's morning comedy spot, be aware that the starting time has changed from 5:30am to 5:00!

Honorable JAMmers!

Just wanted to give those of you who enjoy the Just A Minute webcast
("The JAMmer", http://stream.beatradar.no:8007/listen.pls) a heads up:
I have moved to a new flat, and all that's left in my old flat right now
are the internet servers (The JAMmer server is serving us all from ontop
of a cardboard box right now - luckily the server is tiny and light. :) ).

This connection goes down in about a weeks time, and I've not yet got
the internet connection on my new place up and running. So the shoutcast
server may disappear from the internet in about a weeks time and stay
offline until further notice.

But when it's back up it'll be on a connection that is *real* juicy.
Can't wait. :)

The two Indian Just A Minutes are being recorded in Mumbai in India on Wednesday February 1. You can see the ad for the recording here.    http://in.bookmyshow.com/events/Just-A-Minute-A/ET00008826

The two British regulars are Paul Merton and Marcus Brigstocke - they will be joined by Indian comedians Cyrus Broacha and Anuvab Pal.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrus_Brocha

I found it at thebox.bz - http://www.thebox.bz/details.php?id=182512

You need to login to download it, but it's quota-free.

I like visiting thebox.bz to find out what I've missed recently in Brit comedy, such as Noel Fielding's new TV series, and resumptions of intermittent TV/radio shows (I'm still waiting for "Lead Balloon" and "The IT Crowd" to return).

e.g. Did you know the venerable 'The Fast Show' has had another series of short segments shown by Fosters, like they did with "Alan Partridge's Mid-Morning Matters"

Hi Barry,

According to Deans site it was episode 133 -
http://just-a-minute.info/subjects.html - I did a search for Tut as the
spelling you used came up with nothing, and I am a lousy speller at the best
of times.. and it popped up. I still have no idea which is the correct
way... all I know is Steve Martin's King Tut song.

Hope this helps.

Hello everyone.

I am still continuing listening through JAM and I am up to episode 315. (Being Nosey - 4/Sept/1982)

My copy is incomplete and starts part way into the game. I checked the copies of episode 315 available in the group's links area and both available copies begin exactly the same way my copy does.

SO... does anyone know if this episode is actually incomplete in the archives or is it just an poorly recorded episode that is doing the rounds?

If anyone has a complete copy of episode 315 I would love to hear it.

Cheers all,

Kenneth, Derek, Clement and Gyles perform "La Cucaracha" on harp, dulcimer and harpsichord. With Sue Perkins watching on a sofa in the background, techinically with my friend Cat, but you can pretend it's infrequent guest Dara O'Briain if you want.

Curses. My computer's plugins reconfigured themselves and I missed recording this morning's ABC comedy segment to find out what has replaced JAM on Tuesdays.

Did anyone find out what it was?

I thought is was very well done, too. Certainly the product of a very vivid imagination. I mean, anyone playing "La Cucaracha" on medieval string instruments would be, er, unusual - but JaM stalwarts really takes it that extra stage further.

I do have to confess to watching it with my mouth open. As my daughter would say, "What the...!"

:-)

Hi Mark

A very good question. My downloading software (NetTransport)failed with the following error messages:

2012-02-06 17:57:01.979 icy-notice2:The resource requested is currently unavailable<BR>
2012-02-06 17:57:02.051 Http server error

Don't know whether this was due to my PC doing something else or whether due to ABC. But without you to fall back on I shall be really p****d off if it turns out to be a continuation of JAM.

I have to say that I'm not impressed that ABC atill haven't updated their comedy schedule page. Not that I expected a personal reply from them to my email of 1st February!

Evening all,

Well the new series started this evening. Looking at the way they have
numbered the series I'll be blowed if I can work out where we are. Not that
it really matters I don't use the series number but it is confusing none the
less.

Here is the folder for this series. The 1st episode is within -

Hi Charles. Yes, I've been waiting for them to update the comedy page too. I had a second computer set to record and it got 30 odd minutes of silence too, which is either a big coincidence or the ABC transmission failed.  We shall see!

Many thanks for your kind offer, but another Aussie recorded it and has sent it along.

Dog bless the JAM community  :-)
