I am having a real tidy-up session, and I thought I would ask how people have their files organised.

Here's the ones I'm wondering about, and the way I have it

Name of the file:
"JAM - 1968-03-22 (014) (s01e14) Keeping Wicket"

Title - The first subject?
Artist - Just a Minute? (or BBC?)
Contributing Artist - Just a Minute? (or The panel members?)
Comments - The subjects?
Original Artists?
Composer
Conductor - Nick Parsons / chairman? (I don't do this one)
Track - Episode Number
Disc - Series Number

Anyone else use things?
Name differently?
etc, etc

If you use a portable mp3 player then ID3 tags are a necessity as a lot/most/all of them use tags and not filenames on their display when playing and for sorting too.

Your filenames are long because of the amount of meta-data you put in them, this is a problem with some players (including one of mine) when browsing files instead of titles as they only show the first certain number of characters, the rest being truncated, so I limit the size of my filenames to something like

JAM - s01e14 Keeping Wicket

I use the following ID3v2 tags

Title - s01e14 Keeping Wicket
Album - Just a Minute - s01
Artist - NIck Parsons (maybe, not fully committed yet)
Album artist - ditto
Year - Year
Comments - Date, subjects, contestants
Track - Episode Number
Genre - Radio Comedy
Image - some appropriate image such as CD cover or Nick or the cast or 'whatever' as my iPod displays this while playing the file

I use Mp3tag to edit these as it's free, easy to use, fast, has many shortcuts, can do batch editing and much, much more

This is the way I tag the files I upload for the group:

Title: 2012-02-06 775 - When I Wear A Top Hat
Artist: BBC Radio 4
Album: Just a Minute
Year: 2012
Track: 01
Genre: Panel Game
Comment: Paul Merton, Ross Noble, Jenny Eclair and Gyles Brandreth help
Nicholas Parsons celebrate 45 years of the show. They are asked to talk on
subjects from the original 1967 series.

Mostly it's what comes down through RadioDownloader with just the Title,Year
and Genre tags altered by me.

I only add an image once the series has finished but that's mainly just for
my benefit as I never was really sure about what others wanted in the Tags.

My experience is a little different to this. I don't like to use tags so on my mp3 player I usually choose folder or directory view. I have a Philips GoVibe, an iRiver and a Samsung Yepp. They all give me the option to use the file names and not use the tags.

However, if folks want to do some mp3 tag editing they may find this page helpful:

http://www.portablefreeware.com/?sc=44

I have used the Mp3tag program and found it easy to use.

By the way I download the wma files from the BBC listen again function (I live outside of the UK) and the files already come with tags (Title and Artist).

Love, David

I tag them almost exactly like you Don, only difference is I use date in title instead of episode cause it looks better on the JAMmer stream info, and "artist" is either "Just A Minute" or prefereable the panellists.

Filename syntax I use is "JAM (date) - (title).mp3".

Hi all.  Sorry in advance for teaching grandmothers how to suck eggs...

Keep in mind that when creating a filename, don't use the # symbol for "episode number" because it has special meaning (an anchor) in a URL and will confuse browsers no end if you post the filename online in a link.
Also, don't use spaces in filenames. That's always bad.

My filenaming scheme is like
JAM-2009-08-10@719(s55e03)=My_Idea_of_Bliss

Short, and to the point, like me  :-)

I like to use unique delimiters in filenames so later I can programatically parse (for example) the date, the episode number, or the title by searching for unique characters. I must do something about that date code, however: the use of 3 dashes still bothers me, and not just because of <buzz> REPETITION!

Mark

Remembering to <SNIP> as this post's getting a bit long now and Dean has to approve long ones...

OK seeing what others do has convinced me to adopt the following, even if it means a tad more effort esp for other panel games which are not so well documented as JAM

Artist - Contestants
Album artist - Chairperson

Now I see why you use = and @ in your file names Mark.

Agreed <SPACE> characters are bad in file names esp in Unix, Linux environments. Sad to say I'm a Windows user these days, I will return one day... Anyway, enough techie stuff.

Dude, problems with space in file name is *so* oldschool. It used to be like that, true, but is not anymore.
I'm a Linux user since late 90s. :)
