Topic: ABC now editing down Transcription Disc episodes

I'm guessing that ABC are digitising their transcription discs. It seems to me likely since this month I've noticed two changes - one good, one bad.

The good is that My Music is now being streamed in proper stereo instead of 2-track mono.

The bad is that ABC are starting to edit some programmes to a reduced running time - presumably to fit both the 5am news/weather and the comedy episode into a 30 minute slot. I don't know whether or not they are truncating JAM (or My Music, My Word etc), but I noticed it with recent editions of ISIHAC. The Basingstoke compilation of 2012-01-31 runs 25m58s whereas the same episode on 2009-11-10 runs 27m16s. The Ipswich compilation of 2012-02-13 runs 25m57s whereas the same episode on 2009-11-24 runs 27m17s. The Oxford compilation of 2012-02-20 runs 25m57s whereas the same episode on runs 27m04s.

This isn't to do with tape playback speeds (no tape involved) and it isn't to do with turntable/broadcast speed either. I haven't listened word-for-word all the way through, but I very quickly noticed that in the Basingstoke and Oxford episodes the audience applause/cheering at the beginning has been edited down to a much reduced length. I'm not too bothered about audience cheering per se (indeed I'm not that bothered about ISIHAC since I have the UK non-compilation versions anyway), but what else might they be editing out so as to squeeze in the weather forecast?

Has anyone been comparing the latest JAM broadcasts with earlier versions (or Dean's transcripts) to see if they have had anything removed?

Charlie

yeah we have discussed this in the past, there are edited versions of a lot of these shows around. You have to remember that in the 70s, these shows were being sold to commercial stations around the world, including in New Zealand, so there are recordings around of different lengths.

Hi Mark. I too noticed the full play-out music on today's JAM - and concluded that if that hadn't been cut then the programme itself wouldn't be.

Hi Dean. I've always known that TS versions of programmes were often edited down by TS before being exported so as to accomodate overseas commercial buyers. And therefore that ABC versions have probably always been shorter than the original UK broadcast versions. But I wasn't aware that ABC were doing their own further truncation of the already edited TS disc versions until I noticed a few days ago that I was getting shorter files for ISIHAC episodes from the ABC than I got from ABC only a couple of years ago - shorter versions of the same episodes.

Regards
Charlie

I don’t know for sure, but I would say it is far more likely that the shows are edited by the broadcaster rather than before sale, even in the old days. Radio broadcasters have to time to the second and shaving a few seconds, particularly of something like applause, is something that probably goes on in most broadcasters all the time. I work in radio and I’ve done this myself (not to JAM or Clue of course!)

And there was me thinking that up until this month someone at the ABC was sitting down at 5:30am and putting an actual TS disc onto a turntable and playing it with a stylus. Hence I couldn't see how they could chop bits out of it (as opposed to, say, fading out before the end of the playout music) without digitising first.

Hi Charlie,

I've had a bit of a listen to the start of the Ipswich compilation cf the 2007 broadcast and it seems to be running fast - gaining a few seconds every minute. Odd, since I assume these shows are issued to the ABC on CD. I suspect an ABC cock-up rather than anything deliberate but who knows?...

Cheers,

Mark McKay

Hi Mark

Anything's possible. I'm never keen to judge whether something is fast/slow 'cos I don't have the ear. And comparing the speed of a 2012 digital broadcast with an older encode is liable to the risk that the older encode was made from a tape playback - in which case I'd tend to suspect the old tape playback of being slow rather than the digital broadcast of being fast. But I did play a few of the recent ISIHAC streams alongside older encodes and the result was that they were pretty much in sync until the initial burst of applause/cheering - which was cut much shorter in the recent dgital transmissions.

If all they are doing is editing out applause then it's not a big deal - I haven't listened word for word through an entire episode to see if anything else is being cut.

Charlie
