Hi all
I was lucky enough to win tickets to tonight's two shows. Doubly lucky in that three of my favourites were there too. Julian Clary and Sue Perkins and Paul Merton. Greg Proops was the guest. A big crowd was in attendance. Standing room only at the back. I was upstairs. Got a better seat than I should have due to the Beeb's unusual crowd organisation, for want of a better (worse?) phrase. I wasn't trying to get as good as seat as I could. Front row upstairs, yet I could look down and see all the empty seats whilst just behind me some ended up standing all through the programmes. The show was delayed a bit by these seats being filled eventually. Strange, as people were assigned numbers and called 25 at a time. How simple can it be?

Earlier, I was told I couldn't take photos and that this was on the ticket if I looked carefully. It was too, just as the time that the BBC opened their doors was printed as 6:15pm. When I got there at 6:00pm I was 160/161 in line with my girlfriend. I asked why people weren't queuing and was told that complaints received in the winter by people queuing outside in the cold have made them open their doors early. Why not let everyone know by printing this on the ticket? I was a bit bemused by the way they tie themselves in knots with their own logic.
As for photographs, I would have taken one or two. I don't believe that it can effect the sound equipment. It's all unnecessary but perhaps some of the people on this list will tell me I'm ignorant. I don't mind.

I'd never been to the BBC before and was curious about the whole thing. Overall, I enjoyed it. It was free so I should. Very good value. Well, it's not really free but as good as.

Nicholas Parsons came out and introduced himself. He looked very dapper. It's too incredible to think that he is 88. He certainly doesn't look or sound it. He had a cold but assured us he couldn't have let any of us down by staying away. Not least break his phenomenal attendance record.

The shows were great. I won't spoil anything by talking about jokes or what people said.
Nicholas asked us at the beginning if we thought the TV shows were as good as the radio and most people said no. Personally speaking, I have found some of the TV shows as good as the radio. It all stands and falls on the weakness of the panellists. The shows that had four good panellists, were brilliant and the ones that have a weak panellist are good and two and it all becomes hard work.

I did like Ruth Jones recently on telly. The only episode I thought was a disaster was number 5. Paul was getting very strident with John Sergeant I thought. Deservedly so. The silly old fool shouldn't have come on if he doesn't know what he's doing. Also, I find Josie Lawrence's voice grates and apart from when she was talking about the pound shops she never got into the flow. My heart sinks every time I hear she's going to be on the radio programme, so I admit I'm biased against her.

Anyway, I was in luck tonight and thought I'd share my thoughts for better or worse.

Martin

Glad you had a great time and got good seats Martin.

Re John Sergeant, was surprised to see him back after his dismal appearances on the radio and he wasnt any better on tv. Paul seemed really annoyed at times. I know Paul can pretend to be at times but his annoyance came across as real, to me at least.

Thanks for the review, Martin. I doubt I'll ever get across the Atlantic pond again for a show, so it's nice to enjoy it vicariously.

Re. photography being banned, I think there's more than one reason.

- intellectual property protection
- people who can't/don't turn off their camera flash will distract the panelists
- the shutter click of SLRs can be loud and impinge on their recordings

thanks very much Martin – good honest appraisal. How did Greg go – he hasn’t been much of a success on the show in the past and I am a bit surprised to see him return

Surprised me to to see Greg as a panelist again. Maybe more surprised to discover he's been on JAM 9 times already, the last being in 2007! Though it would have been about 10 years ago at a minimum.

Hi Dean
Well, I thought you might guess by reading between the lines how Greg performed. It wasn't that he didn't listen. He did get a few points like this which proved he was intent on playing the game. It's just that when he did speak he was a bit slow out of the gate. He does have a lovely endearing manner. The audience all cheered when he appeared. The last to be called. The panel were all introduced individually and walked on from behind a black curtain which was the backdrop for the stage. He is endearing and has one of the most unusual voices I believe I've ever heard. He strikes me as more of a physical comedian though. He was making the audience laugh in little breaks during the recording by whimsically making little paper aeroplanes which pathetically didn't fly very far. He undoubtedly has presence but, I dunno, maybe practice before you come on, Greg.
It's an interesting question to ask if this is a show you can practice for? Perhaps not.
I was very unfair on Josie the other day and it has been chastening to get nice feedback. I hardly deserve it but thanks to Don I now feel purged. It won't happen again, sir.
Kenneth Williams used to say that critics are like eunuchs and perhaps he knew better than most. Very critical man. I love him too, though.
I was listening to one of the old shows where he famously said, as he used to when thwarted by the opposite sex, 'Women shouldn't be allowed on the show'. Five minutes later when he agreed with a challenge she'd made, he was most ebullient, enthusing, Yessss, we should have more women on the show'. Hilarious.
I couldn't agree more.
Martin

Just a Minute hasn't really been the best format for Greg. He's much better when he gets to improvise without the constraints of playing without hesitation, repetition or deviation, as that's what he's best at. Just watch his work on stage, on Whose Line or in Drew Carey's Improv-a-Ganza.

thanks again Martin.

I saw Greg’s stand-up last year and he pretty much just talked into the mike so I guess I would see him as a talker rather than a physical comedian.

Ages ago I talked to Ross Noble about his technique for JAM and he told me that when he started he tried to parse every word to avoid repetition and speak very slowly and  inevitably ended up hesitating. He found it worked better for him to largely speak normally.

I wonder if that is true for others. Maybe Greg would do better if he just tried to talk like he would if he was doing his act?

cheers, D
