Topic: A Couple of (humble) Suggestions

I would like to offer a couple of (humble) suggestions. If they are not considered worthy then please feel free to cast them aside like an old shoe....or something like that

Suggestion 1
I have an old computer that I have formatted with Linux (Linux Mint) and I only use that computer for my downloads. I download things on that computer and then store them on a portable hard drive. Then I play those files on my big, expensive, shiny windows PC or my top of the range mp3 player. Actually the truth is that I use a small Samsung netbook and an old Philips GoVibe mp3 player. Hopefully you get the point...no problems with viruses.

Suggestion 2
Are we close to having a group password controlled cloud storage? The reason that I mention this is the fear generated by the Megaupload affair and the growth in free size offered by such things as Google Drive.

Hopefully these suggestions may offer some food for thought.

Love as always, David

My home setup is like this:

I have an old second-hand Asus EEE box that does my torrenting. Since it uses so little electricity, it runs 24x7 and I manage it remotely using TightVNC* (to control it) or my homegroup shares (to upload to/download from it).  I threw an extra gig of RAM in the EEE box to bring it up to 2G, and it runs Win7 quite nicely.  It only has a 100G HDD, but that's quite enough because...

I store all my stuff on a 6 terabyte NAS (network attached storage) which all 3 of my home computers (and my personal video recorder, for movie streaming!) can freely access by CAT6 cable or wirelessly.  My NAS (a Synology DS410) does have its own bittorrent client, but I prefer to use a more configurable installation (uTorrent) on the EEE box.

My desktop is a sturdy, cheap Aldi Medion. My power machine is actually my laptop (a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q870 - don't you just *love* that sexy name?) with 18.5" CRT, quad core i7 CPU, 6G RAM and 1T total secondary storage comprising 1 SSD and 1 HDD.  It's a nice machine, but a bit of a bitch to carry in a backpack on my motorbike.

I edit audio with Adobe Audition, and video with AVS video converter.

Mark

*I also have VNC apps on my iPad and phone, so I can control the EEE box, my laptop and desktop anytime and anywhere I like  ;-)
