Topic: Cause of the multiple 'Romulus and Remuses'

Message 1 / 4

Radio National has replied to my query about the JAM repeats...

Our apologies for the error. Many years ago when these comedies were converted from LP to
CD, it seems the technician with the thankless task made some errors, occasionally
neglecting to turn over the LP before recording the next CD. In this case they not only
failed to turn over the disc, but left the same disc on the turntable while they recorded
three CD's of the same episode numbered with different numbers. We are gradually weeding
out the defective CD's and hopefully this sort of incident should become less frequent in
the future.
Thanks for your understanding.

regards

Interesting - thanks Mark. Perhaps the same technician was the reason why ABC managed to play the same episode of My Music 4 times in 6 weeks last November/December! I could live with these hiccups if they still played everything at least once. But with both My Music and My Word they have a habit of getting back on schedule by not broadcasting at all the episode that should have been broadcast but wasn't because of the duplicate.

It sounds like the technician may have missed out some of the discs whilst duplicating others! As they admit it was "many years ago" that the LPs were copied, perhaps ABC should consider doing fresh transfers using the latest technology. The job could be outsourced if necessary. A good sound engineer would be able to clean the recordings at the same time and provide them with new broadcast masters for future generations to enjoy.

I should perhaps point out that most professional radio stations do not retain archive format LPs, cassettes, or open reels after the programme content has been transfered to digital storage. It would be surprising if any of the vinyl LP's remain in ABC's vaults.
