Topic: Who will take over?

Hi All
With the inevitable retirement of NP as chairman of JAM, who could possibly take over. I have been listening closely to Tony Hawks and he seems to fit in nicely. He does not take himself to seriously, he understands the game well.

Stephen Fry would also be good, but not sure he would want to do another panel show. And he cant play very well.
Graham Norton, not sure its his bag really, but he sure can play the game well.

NP is a difficult act to follow for sure and his acting skills sets him in good stead to build up the start and the end of the show, which I still find amazing after so many years he is still so excited about the game.

So pop your views and names into the ring and lets see how this falls.

PS have any of you actually been able to play the game for REAL?

I think it might be someone out of left field.
Never listen to it but wasnt Jack Dee a bit of a surprise when he took over hosting Im Sorry I Havent A Clue?

Cant see Stephen Fry doing, he has so many projects on the go wouldnt have the time to record 3 series a year.

Surely the makers of the show have a few people in mind, may also ask Nicolas who he would suggest since he's been there since the start and would have a good idea who had the neccessary skills to do it well.

NOTE

I replied to another thread earlier but its disappeared from here, no idea where its gone.

Hi all,

I tend to agree with the thought that an NP successor may come out of left field.  Chairing the game requires quite different skills to playing the game.  However, I would be reluctant to make suggestions as I’m not fully au fait with the breadth of talent available in the UK.

Having said that, familiarity with the game would be a huge plus for any new compere.  If a successor were to come from the current player pool, I agree that Tony Hawks may be up to it.  I’m quite a fan!

I’m in two minds about NP’s eventual retirement.  A carefully chosen new Chairman would freshen-up the show.  However, some of the funniest moments have come from Nicholas’s naivety, and he’d be missed.  One of my favourite moments is Kit Hesketh-Harvey stating he played a transvestite (aka a “TV”) in a live show. Nicholas was so fixated on him being a TV that he missed every mention from the panellists about Kit being a transvestite. No matter how many times I listen to that episode, I still laugh.

Just throwing in my penny’s worth.

I would put Gyles as the favourite to be the next chairman at the moment.

I’ve played it for real... not very successfully!

Wayne – do you really think Stephen Fry “can’t play very well” or was that a typo? I think he is one of the very best players of the game in the show’s history and he has won more than half of the shows he has done.

Mathew – sometimes the Yahoo server is a bit erratic but we have had several messages from you. Which was the thread your comment hasn’t showed up in?

Yes, I dont think Stephen is very good at it IMHO, he stalls too often and does not seem to make it flow, but its my view only.

Dear all (-1),

I think Gyles is too good and funny and dominant a player to put him in the chair. Whilst I love the repartee he has with Paul, and I think the two could appear togther more often, I think it would alter the balance of the programme. Yes, I certainly can imagine Gyles being the butt of all the jokes that Nic is of, but I can't see Gyles knowing when to stop. I would also miss his panelist role. I would vote for Tony, in ten years time though. Nic will carry on......Unless someone can coax Tim Rice back. I think he would be really good.

Steven is a good player and very erudite and its a red letter day when he is on (well apart from two last year which I saw in person and were a let down all round).

Dave

They should go for someone left field.  I think Richard Osman (long
time producer of game-shows, recently moved into presenting them with
"Pointless") might be pretty good. He's a bit like a less-arrogant
version of Stephen Fry.

If they have to go with one of the panelists, then I agree that TH
should be the one.

Richard Osman would be a good shout bbc speaking. He has been working his way up over the years in a number of shows and is appearing more on tv and radio (most known for Pointless presumabely). Has a decent sense of humour, intelligent (you need to know about a lot of topics) and should be able to keep the panel in order.

Re Tony Hawks for me moving him to host would take something away from the playingside. He is one out of a small number ho are odds on to do very very well (contribution, humour, game play etc) on the shows hes on.

Totally agree on Hawks. He's humble too, and not a spotlight hogger. Plus he's intelligent and indeed understand the game and the rules. He's not the funniest or best *panellist* out there, but you don't need to be that to be a good chairman (Nick suck as a panellist for example).

So yeah, I vote for Hawks!

Being an american I may not be as up to date on the uk presenters as some here but I think it's a good idea to chose someone the Panel can have a "Go At" now & then as that is an important part of the interaction between the panelist & chairman.

It doesn't have to be older like Nicholas' generation but still someone has some kind of quirk that the panel can use and has the abiltiy to take those kind of barbs. Just My Opinion.. Miriam

Hi All
Well Nicholas has been a mainstay on the show and keeps it moving along well. However, I dont want him to go down the same road as Clement and Peter Jones, who slowed down so much that listening to them sounding frail and not really with it any more makes me sad. It would be a shame if Nicholas was allowed to degenerate in this way..The BBC should start having guest chairmen to see what differences it makes to the show.

I was thinking about Rob Brydon as a suitable candidate the other night but consider the person should be someone that has established radio experience and a desire to be in it for a long time; David Mitchell. (Clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnxc2Ro8Sks)

Hi All,

I am just responding to a number of recent comments on this thread.

I heard Tony on ISIHAC this week and felt he did really well, unexpectedly so, despite frequent Errs. That edition was packed with past Jammers.

What I really love is when the panel teases Nic or says outrageous things about his past life, famously as a transvestite (TV big boy) prostitute in old London town, and these teases are often deliberately contrived by the subject title. Though I am on record as saying Tony could do a sound job as Chair, I cannot see him attracting this sort of teasing. Gyles on the other hand could be teased mercilessly as Chair, but I would miss him as a panellist, as well as perhaps lacking the other qualities of a JAM Chair. Not sure if he would know when to let the others have a go.

Rob Brydon - didn't really like his appearances, and he seemed to pitch his complaints in an angry fashion.

I think Nic has got better with age as a Chair....If I had the time and inclination I would do an analysis by the decade of his errors (iro wrongly awarded repetition mainly) and I reckon these would show a decade on decade improvement. Peter's last year is hard to listen to, but I think Clement remained very funny till the end - and though his delivery slowed, his pursuit of bonus points for me made his final years a joy.

I think Tim Rice would make a good Chair, and I wish he would come back to JAM.

Dave

Some good points there, Dave:

What I really love is when the panel teases Nic or says outrageous things about his past life, famously as a transvestite (TV big boy) prostitute in old London town, and these teases are often deliberately contrived by the subject title. Though I am on record as saying Tony could do a sound job as Chair, I cannot see him attracting this sort of teasing.

That is an exceptionally good point. But then again, I can't really picture *anyone* being as easily teased as Nic, because only Nic is so... easy to "bully". It's just how he is as a person, he's so attackable. How he loves to be talked about, how he so often occasionally say something rather dumb, you know, his entire person is like that. He just *have* to be attacked by the panel members or the entire show would fall flat!

With the next chairman there will also follow a significant change of the show, I think that is completely unavoidable. The worst thing I can imagine is if we get a new chairman that "tries to be" Parsons. That would be the death of the show.

I still root for Hawks!

I think Nic has got better with age as a Chair....If I had the time and inclination I would do an analysis by the decade of his errors (iro wrongly awarded repetition mainly) and I reckon these would show a decade on decade improvement.

I've claimed the same! I believe that Dean then said that was just my imagination - and one shall never underestimate data coming from the Dean - but at least the major errors, or the situations where he just flat out don't pay attention, seems to be fewer and further between during the last, say, 7-8 years than much of the 90s. At least, that's how things appear in my head too.

Peter's last year is hard to listen to, but I think Clement remained very funny till the end - and though his delivery slowed, his pursuit of bonus points for me made his final years a joy.

Oh man, I thought Clement was really tough to listen to the last few episodes. Man, he didn't follow what was going on at all.

He should have retired at least a year earlier, in my opinion.
