Topic: HELP!

Message 1 / 5

Due to a recent disaster I lost all my copies of Just a Minute and although I restored most from backup I have to admit that my backup wasn't as up-yo-date as it should have been (not even close!).

The result is, I have no recordings of recent JAM series, I am missing everything from programme 0739 which, I believe is the first episode of series 57, onwards. Plus, far more difficult, some improved recordings of older programmes that I had slowly built up mostly courtesy of ABC via Martin.

For some years I have been recording my own episodes of JAM as they were broadcast, so I was surprised to find that I could NOT manage to get mediafire to work to replace the missing files - also most of the links associated with this group which are on mediafire are now too big to work since the rules for mediafire changed.

I am no computer novice but managing to sign-up to mediafire and successfully download the recent recordings has completely defeated me.
It requires me to download some third party utility which basically acts like a virus, re-writing my browser settings and making my computer virtually unusable online ... all of which I would accept IF I actually managed to download any episodes, but not a single download has worked. Radio archive appears to have basically fallen apart after someone finally decided to take action with regard to copyright on all this stuff we happily exchange.

1. Can someone please take pity on me and point me to a site offering these later episodes AND/OR advise me on the best utility to use if said site choses to use something other than FTP for file download.

2. Much more difficult this one ... is there a place for the ABC recordings made during their re-run of all JAM episodes that I can access over time as I come across older recordings that are too bad to listen to?

Thanks in advance for any help that can be given.

Dave.

Hi Dave,

I am unsure what software Mediafire would ask you to download other than
their uploader software Mediafire Express. I always thought that was an
optional download.

For the sake of ease here some direct links that should take you directly to
my uploads for the past few series.

Series 63 - http://www.mediafire.com/?r22gkk2harmrz
Series 62 - http://www.mediafire.com/?wap0eqfmoobua - This includes the 2
shows recorded in India

You mentioned Radio Archive here links to a series 63 Torrent -
http://radioarchive.cc/torrents-details.php?id=14408
Series 62 - http://radioarchive.cc/torrents-details.php?id=14062
Series 61 - http://radioarchive.cc/torrents-details.php?id=13088

There are seeded torrents going back quite a ways.

Hope this helps some.

Paul

To Paul and Mark ....

Thanks very much for your invaluable help in this time of great distress for me! I am now back up to date with the latest episodes. I used Mediafire to get some of the recent episodes back and had no problem, I can only think that I was duped by a clever advert previously which caused me to download and install software which you quite obviously don't need for downloading from the site,

As for the improved recordings from the re-broadcast ABC episodes, I feel certain there were more than the list at http://nylon.net/up/ BUt this is a great start and I really can't thank you enough. Unfortunately, I was never able to get access to ABC myself for some reason and I don't like hassling people for copies just because the sound quality is a little better. Having said that, even if I had I would have just lost most of them....

While I am on the subject, I wonder, did ABC ever get as far as episodes such as 0412 "Bags" and 0414 "Biscuits In Bed" which I have NEVER had a copy od that was actually listenable to?

To anyone reading this, Let me give you this word of warning about back-ups.... I edit down many of my episode copies, partly to save space but mainly because, although sometimes very interesting, I don't want to hear a couple of minutes of news before the JAM show starts and, indeed, in most of my copies I had edited out the initial welcomes and final 'credits' off each episode. I never posted any of these because many of the 'purists' frown on this type of file 'adulteration' and also the more versions of an episode floating about the net the more confusing it can be with different file naming conventions etc etc. Anyway the point is, all that careful editing I did to pack more laughs per minute into my JAM listening has been lost forever and I'm not sure I have the heart to put that amount of effort in again which must have amounted to 100s of hours over the years. I always kept the originals, and most odf those were backed-up adequately (on CD), but all my personal effort has been lost. So the moral is, when you truly value your data ... DON'T SKIMP ON YOUR BACKUP and if your back-up is automated (as i thought mine was, only backing up any file that had changed) check it is still working from time to time!

Once again, thanks to everyone who helped me get this collection together in the first place (I started in 2003 when it was MUCH harder to find episodes before this group came along) and a special thanks to Paul and Mark for their response to my S.O.S. I listen to Just a Minute episodes just about every day of my life and find it almost impossible to go to sleep without one on in the background. A thousand thank yous.

My backups of JAM consist of:
1. My NAS (using RAID5 for data redundancy - one disk can die and I'll lose no data)
2. I upload episodes to my domain.
3. On my hard disk at work.
4. On my hard disk in my home cave.
5. Every so often, I dump them all to a 1 TB USB hard disk, just to be safe.
6. In the past dumped stuff to DVD, so I have lots of older versions of episodes there.

I recently planned to duplicate everything to Dropbox, but realised I was probably going a tad too far.

It will take several floods, fires and meteors to account for all of my JAMs.
