Martin Hood is going to be over here next week and while here hopes to
digitise those shows in my collection that are currently unavailable on
the group list.

as I thought the shows involved are rather fewer than might have been
thought - 43 by his count. But the point is that within the next few
weeks - everything that is available to me will be available to the
entire group.

I think it would be appropriate to note Martin intends to spend a chunk
of his vacation sitting in a hotel room working on this task. We should
be grateful for his extraordinary generosity in this and also in making
his collection available to the group.

JAM tends to bring out the best in the people. :-) But thank you Martin,
from the bottom of my heart, and I'm sure many others here will agree.

We will keep you informed on progress - but for the moment be aware that
at least another 20 hours of JAM fun is on its way...

this is indeed great news.  And, to you Martin Hood, whereever you are, I would like to take my hat off to you, dearest of all JAMsters, for your generosity in the coming weeks.  I'm sure I speak for other fans when I say that this is indeed a most wonderful gesture that will be most appreciated by one and all.

Momentous news indeed! Thank you both very much, I hope my own small
contribution to the missing episodes list has helped save a couple of
hours of work.

I haven't been on the group much recently due to a family
bereavement. I have though contined searching for missing episodes
with WinMx and have spent much time downloading mis-named episodes
only to find out they aren't what they purport to be - hopefully
there will no longer be any need for this once you two have done your
stuff.

Just in case anyone else is having the same frustrations meantime
I'll list here the worst offenders (This is EXACTLY how they appear
on WinMx) so that they can be avoided - as I promised some weeks ago -
and hopefully will save others a great deal of time and
disappointment.....

(400) - 900324 - Garden Words.mp3 - This is Actually #405
(436) - 940115 - Double Whammy.mp3 - This is Actually #441
(437) - 940122 - Norwich.mp3 - This is Actually #441
Just A Minute #30.04.mp3 - This is Actually #441 (#30.08)
Just A Minute (bbc) 1994-01-22 - Der.mp3 - Actually #441 (1994-02-19)

The episode below is Actually #302 and variously appears as #310,
#298 and others under MANY guises. It can easily be recognised
because it starts off with Clement being given the subject 'The last
time I broke the law'. This is a typical way it is listed...

82-07-31 310 Original Foursome - What Our Audience Loves (1st 8 min
missing).mp3

This last one was corrected in the group list already. I'm still
listening through previous episodes, especially the incomplete ones,
for any other misnamed episodes that may conceal some missing gem.
Dean's transcripts have been invaluable for this. So far no others
have been found and I think probably the group list is as complete
and accurate as it can be now.

Can't wait for the extra episodes. Thanks once again in anticipation.

Thank you, Martin Hood!  Although I will almost certainly never get around to downloading and listening to all of these episodes, it's comforting to know they're there if I need them.

I had that same problem, which is why I haven't used WinMX for a while, because of the misnamed files.  what's amazing though is why people do it in the first place, is it some sort of practical joke, if it is, its rather cruel and insulting quite frankly.

In fact I did inform all of them about their misnamed episodes and
*some* went to the bother of changing them and downloding the correct
episodes from me to replace the gaps left (where I had them). It
seems that where there were missing episodes, ie. non to replace the
misnamed ones, these just persisted in many people's collections -
and still persist as of last weekend i might add (I still download
them everytime in case!!!).

What amazes me is that almost all those that persist are actually
what I have come to call 'the Eddie Izzard Episode' which
tantalizingly refers to this as his second appearance, and I can't
tell you how many 'Just A Minute - Eddie Izzard.mp3' I have
downloaded but never ever found the other one. Being an Izzard fan I
have often come across these searching for his stuff from the other
direction, as it were.

However, If you check the group download links you will see I added
some missing episodes that I came across YEARS after starting my
WinMx search so I've always felt it worth continuing as there is
obviously some other source feeding into that community other than
ours here.

Another reason for mix ups, by the way, is, I believe, the use of
Americanised dates on the files (many people judge the episode by
dates rather than number (which we get from Dean's site as a rule) or
by the name of the first subject. While 1990-04-14 is obvious,
1990-04-07 certainly isn't and it just so happens the epsiode from
that last date is missing. This is why I re-named all thje files I
got on WinMx and use the correct international date format of
14Apr1990 and ALL files that have been downloaded from me (many
thousands over the last 3 years) have all gone out having first been
checked as correct against Dean's site (we put a LOT of pressure on
Dean don't we?) and been re-named in my own clumsy format eg.
0406-26-8-5May90-Just A Minute(Health Food Shops)DN,CF,PJ,WR.mp3

Clumsy, yes, but contains all search terms and identifications that
people use to search WinMx and decide whether or not to download. Any
group member who has files named in this way now knows where they
came from!

It's worth noting that the complete list of dates and shows has only
been there three or four years - I spent about the same amount of time
before that bringing it together, with help from a few people, including
one or two on the list. I guess some of these files may be older than
that.

we all make mistakes. At times there have been mistaken orders on my
list. But that's one great thing about the Internet and having a working
file - strangers wrote to me and said "hey that bit's wrong" or "that
bit's missing" and slowly the complete list came together. I haven't had
a correction now in three years which makes me confident the list is
correct.

oh.  well alright then.  however, there is an addition I think that should be taken into account on one of the transcripts for one of the episodes, I forgot what number episode it was, but it was an episode where the panel was Clement Freud, Peter Jones, Kenneth Williams and Andree Melly, and I think the subject was 'Independence', and Clement was talking about a place in London or the UK that had declared their independence, he got challenged for deviation by Peter I believe, and Clement arouses an interesting debate saying to Nicholas, 'Do you remember you once said that you can do whatever you like, provided you keep going?  I didn't hesitate, I didn't deviate, and I didn't repeat myself, the fact that you don't believe that my village made their unilateral declaration of independence is entirely irrelevant!' it happened to be one of the funniest remarks in the episode.  :)

we all make mistakes. At times there have been mistaken orders on my
list. But that's one great thing about the Internet and having a working
file - strangers wrote to me and said "hey that bit's wrong" or "that
bit's missing" and slowly the complete list came together. I haven't had
a correction now in three years which makes me confident the list is
correct.

If we're going to talk about nitpicking the transcripts, that's a
whole new ballgame. Let's not let that overtake this thread.

oh far from it, merely bringing up something, as an aside, a side bar, something that's just 'by the way' you know.  :)

I was talking about the list of episodes, not the transcripts. I don't
claim that in transcribing 350 hours of radio, every word is correct. If
there is a whole passage missing it's because it's not on my copy of the
show. We've talked before about some shows having extra bits on some
versions.

But if you want to make a comment on the transcripts, email me off-list.
Obviously though there's nothing I can do unless you can cite the show
involved.

But as I say, off-list please.
