I've been researching old UK radio and tv listings recently (going right back to 1922) and, with the recent JAM repeats on Radio 4 Extra, it seems the right time to share my findings on the first series.
As we know, the pilot episode (S01E01) went out on a Friday evening. However, most of Series 1 was also repeated on Saturday afternoons!
Between December 1967 and April 1968 a total of 26 episodes of JAM aired on BBC Radio 4 - 13 on a Friday and 13 on a Saturday. Here are the original broadcast dates and times:
S01E01 Fri, Dec 22, 1967, 7.30pm
S01E02 Fri, Dec 29, 1967, 7.30pm
S01E02 Sat, Dec 30, 1967, 1.10pm
S01E03 Fri, Jan 05, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E03 Sat, Jan 06, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E04 Fri, Jan 12, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E04 Sat, Jan 13, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E05 Sat, Jan 20, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E06 Sat, Jan 27, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E07 Fri, Feb 2, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E07 Sat, Feb 3, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E08 Fri, Feb 9, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E08 Sat, Feb 10, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E09 Sat, Feb 17, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E10 Fri, Feb 23, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E10 Sat, Feb 24, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E11 Fri, Mar 1, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E11 Sat, Mar 2, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E12 Fri, Mar 8, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E12 Sat, Mar 9, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E13 Fri, Mar 15, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E13 Sat, Mar 16, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E14 Fri, Mar 22, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E14 Sat, Mar 23, 1968, 1.10pm
S01E15 Fri, Mar 29, 1968, 7.30pm
S01E16 Fri, Apr 5, 1968, 7.30pm
As you can see, if you only listened to Radio 4 on Friday evenings you would have missed Episodes 5, 6 and 9. Conversely, if you only listened on Saturday afternoons, you would have missed Episodes 1, 15 and 16.
Hopefully this will clear up some of the confusion as to why the BBC dated their recent broadcast as January 20th - there was no JAM on Jan 19 (or Jan 26, or Feb 16) as the evening was taken up instead with a BBC Symphony Orchestra concert.

Simon - Thank you for this information. I was wondering why the BBC's date was the 20th.

WOW
Fantastic research Simon, we maybe able to get a list of JAM that we can check against episodes missing etc
WELL DONE. Can I ask what research are you doing that would involved this type of data?
Thanks Wayne

Hi Wayne, as a database developer I spend hours collating all types of data - this is just a small part of a larger project I'm working on at the moment. The broadcast times and dates were collected from TV & Radio listings printed in The Times newspaper (1785-2006) which is now available in digital format. Most UK residents can access it online for free using their library card number. ;-)
I haven't looked at the later series of JAM yet (that's my next task) but I suspect that most episodes have had several airings over the years, first on Radio 4, then on the BBC World Service, and now, of course, on Radio 4 Extra. It's therefore quite plausible that every episode still exists "somewhere" - either in the BBC Sound Archive, the British Library Sound Archive, BBC Worldwide or an international radio station archive.

Simon - Thanks for the tip about accessing The Times back issues via library card number. Just tried it and it works for me. I didn't know about it and it's something I will find very useful.

Off topic
One of my main hobbies (apart from JAM) is collating everything there is to know about Norma Sykes, the busty Stockport girl who became Sabrina in the 50s and early 60s (
sabrina.nylon.net.) I have found many newspaper articles from the Daily Mirror and Daily Express via
www.ukpressonline.co.uk, American Sabrinanews in the Newspaper Archive (
U.S.), Australian news from Google News and The National Library of Australia's
Trove - all great and cheap ways of getting historical news - but I've found precious little from The Times... I think Sabrina was rather too common for their esteemed columns.
So I was wondering if you fine British chaps have free access to historical Times, and had a few minutes free, I wonder if you would be so kind as to do a search for Norma Sykes aka Sabrina, principally from 1955 to 1964?
I know this is a bit of a cheek to abuse Dean's wonderful group for my selfish pursuits, but I've already nagged him into ransacking New Zealand's media for information and so I guess if I'm in for a penny I might as well go in for a quid.
And while I'm here, if anyone happens to pass through South America or South Africa in the near future, I'd love to hear of Sabrina news from those places too!
Thanks, and now we can return to our regular programming...
Mark

Mark (with apologies to Dean for being off-topic). A search on "Norma Sykes" from 1950 to 1970 brings up 4 hits (all for Sabrina) - one in the Court Circular and three in the Law Reports. I've copied the articles as jpg files, zipped them, and upped them for you here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qp3vlr
I also did a search on "Sabrina" from 1955 to 1965. It brought up some 250 hits! I had a quick deco - some are your Sabrina, some aren't (I guess it isn't/wasn't such an uncommon forename). I don't have time at the moment to plough through them all, but I'll keep it in mind.
Regards
Charlie

I guess they're the same four articles that I sent you, Mark! I used the "download" option that converts them into PDFs. (Charlie: to download use the down arrow icon, next to the printer icon, that appears just below the header when you're viewing an article. It took me a while to find it as there's no text link for downloading - just that image!)

Many thanks, Simon. It's a shame the stately Times only reported on Sabrina when she was in court (which actually was fairly frequent!)
Thanks for your help
